Once again, expeptional circumstances. Similar to Sarek's call for help in season 1 of Discovery. Every rule or pattern has exceptions. When the Federation ship full of Vulcans was destroyed (The Imunity Syndrome?) Spock was able to "feel" their deaths. Very strong external psychic or psychological stimulus has been shown to trigger his deeper telepathic responses.
Of course, in the Kelvin Universe the destruction of Vulcan elicited little visible telepathic distress, only emotional, in either Spock. Again, my humble opinion, YMMV.
This is actually one thing I really don't like about modern Trek, SNW included – that apparently every captain needs to have their own catchphrase for going to warp
I don't watch DSC but as far as I know every captain says "Engage" this version of Pike (kinda aping from the ST09 version) is the only one who had to make a "catch phrase" out of it. Everyone else seems to say the actual command labeled on the button on the console.
Maybe get that gastrointestinal distress looked at by a doctor.
ETA: Okay 09 Pike said something different and Archer did as well. That's hardly "every captain" needing their "go to warp" command a catch phrase.

But at least, Pike's "hit it", derived from his "punch it" in the reboot, was the first of the NewTrek.
Always loved that. There's a certain aggression to it.

I know they all used to say "engage". As a standard Starfleet term for going to warp it made sense. Now everyone having to have their own spin on it – "hit it", "punch it", "let's fly" – feels self-consciously cringe. But hey, that's just me. And if it's the biggest criticism I have of a show then we're not doing too badly in the grand scheme of things.

The comet may have been a life bringer, but it didn't exactly bring life, it just added rain to what looked like a preindustrial culture, who was very much already alive.

yeah the story did not make much sense and this is a weaker episode to the first. I also thought the scene with laan, uhura, sam and spock on the comet was very dry and Not directed well at all, they just standing there and walking around , it felt very amateur in the direction. I don't fault the actors. I fault whoever directed and wrote this episode.
This was a meh episode when you look at it as a science fiction series , the only thing that works here is uhura and spock getting some character development. It does not seem to be taking long to see the Alex Kurtzman derivate and generic plot showing its face again in the third star trek series he has created.
Also I know some give me a hard time here since they see me as a star trek discovery hater, but I think the entire cast of discovery at least in season 1 had a far stronger stage presence than the strange new cast. Shocking to say this but it feels true.
Sarek, Prime Gerogiou, Locca, Michael, Saru, Tilly and the Klingons gave season 1 of discovery a special kind of weight that strange new world seems to be lacking. SNW feels kind of bland compared to the early seasons of Discovery.

I think the implication is that the brush with the comet brought a significant mass of water to the planet, which will have profound effects on its climate, and help the development of civilisation.

Probably any life they think they comet creates or helps are its "children."
There were forms of life on Earth that were eliminated and/or helped by geological and celestial events. Just because there was an intelligent species on the planet before the comet doesn't mean they were thriving and set to become and advanced race in a few millennia, they may have been on the brink due to a long-running drought. The comet changing the atmosphere likely took them from a destiny of extinction in the next couple centuries to being a developing civilization in the Bronze Age.
