Michelle Paradise: Seasons 3 and 4 covered rebuilding Federation arc; seasons 5 onward = new

Since we've got SNW and LD doing planet-of-the-week, can't Disco do season long stories (although hopefully better than season 4 was)? With all this Trekkake, I don't want every show to be indistinguishable in style.

Yes I don’t have a problem with season long stories I think I would just prefer continuous serialized stories (even multi season) like DS9 had or like most serialized shows have rather than episode 1 introducing a mystery that will be wrapped up in episode 10.

I would prefer the season long story but the bite back on Picard and Discovery will probably push to episodic format and create sameness across the shows.
 
The season-long plot arcs are all misdirects. The universe/galaxy-ending threats merely serve as a backdrop for the real meat of the series - the deep, intense exploration of these incredible characters.

Will you take my hand and join me? This is not a TV show; this is an experience. Let it wash over you like the warm rays of sunlight breaking a cold, overcast day.

Why can’t DIS do miniarcs like ENT S4? Or episodic content with serialised storytelling and character development. Such examples include the NX-01’s S1 journey to Risa, which involved protecting a Vulcan ambassador from corrupt Mazarites in one episode and Archer hanging out with space Bin Laden in another. The NX-01 visiting the repair station after hitting Romulan mine the following season is another, and that one could have been stretch out a few episodes

DS9 itself had The Klingon-Cardassian war over the course of S4, and the build to the Federation declaring war with the Dominion in S5. There were also multiple episode arcs like Eddington vs Sisko, which were spaced out over S4 & S5.

There are many different ways to change up the DIS format without going back to planet of the week like SNW & LD.

Simply put, because that's not what either the producers making the show or perhaps the studio/streaming service who commissioned the show want. They could do more standalones, as clearly shown by Strange New Worlds, but those aren't the stories they want to tell. They want to tell season long stories. As to why, it's probably because that's what streaming services tend to program, and modern successful sci-fi/fantasy series tend to be.

Well, for both season 1 and 2, it's because the people in charge were changed midway through.

Because the ratings for every season of Star Trek dropped after TNG, and producers/studios typically don't want to duplicate losing formulas? They like to MAKE money, not lose it.
 
Hoping season 5 is mostly episodic with a mix of an arc, but not a mystery box arc. No more season long mysteries please.

Nah, I like the season-long arcs. Besides, the S3 and S4 models are basically designed to have episodic A-plots that are linked by a serialized B-plot until the last third of the season, when the serialized background plot moves to the foreground and takes over. It's similar to the model used by Doctor Who and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

DIS S3 & 4 doesn’t feel the same like DS9 S4 & 5 or ENT S1 & S2, although that may be because there isn’t as much filler.

What the fuck are you talking about? Every season of DIS has made money. DIS S3 and S4 were written with "final destinations" in mind for the season and written out with those in mind.
 
DSCO being too serialised seems a relatively new Trekkie brainbug now, when I recall a couple episodic stories and under appreciated mini-arcs from its first season....

It's awkward because on the one hand I want to see how things like that work out in the future, on the other hand I also want to see how it works out in the present. The more world building Discovery does, the more it risks spoiling events in the present day series, or locking them to a certain path.

Its not quite like DS9 S4/S5. Every season of DIS is more like ENT S3 with the filler removed.

I don't think so.

1) That story isn't done yet. And I think that Borg children in the 28th century, as brought up by LD, is a better reference point anyways in regards to Federation membership.

2) DIS haven't brought up the synth ban, Mars attack, XBs & Hugh, the Artifact, or fallout from the Zhat Vash revelations from PIC S1. They haven't mentioned the Pakleds who are important to Lower Decks either. Plus, the Disco crew are barely familiar with Picard; I doubt they know or can be bothered to know who the Borg Queen is, or who Seven is, or that full Romulans started serving in Starfleet as early as the 25th century, or the 21st century Mariposa movement brought up in the finale, or are familiar with El-Aurians like Guinan. The Discovery crew don't even bring up Archer, Porthos & the rest of gang and the NX Refit, and they grew up with stories about them that likely inspired them to join Starfleet to begin with. Tilly's snowglobe with the original NX class Enterprise is as close as it got this past season.
 
I hope we move beyond Klingons and everything in the local neighborhood. we've left the galaxy but did not go far. maybe with the 10c's knowledge and Zora's help, Discovery can really start to go to new places, new galaxies.
I hope the Klingon Chancellor lost to an Earthling in Ping Pong and EVERY Klingon performed ritual suicide for that dishonor

One of your big ideas is to bring Enterprise, the unprofitable black sheep of the Star Trek family back so...

There's nothing wrong with a bit of pie in the sky, but if you're gonna put ideas put there that are both unprofitable and unrealistic then you can hardly complain when people reach the conclusions that they do.

All untrue and it requires quite an ignorant reading of the show to come that conclusion. DSC does low-stakes, medium stakes and filler all within a larger high-stakes arc that spreads over the season. It's done that in every season.
