Some folks on the BBS have seen this episode. So there's no harm in starting a spoiler topic for them to discuss it.

I'll endeavor to put specific plot spoilers and reveals behind spoiler tags, for now, and just make general spoiler comments out in the open.

I'm not going to be the guy who creates the series spoiler topics for this series. But I've seen this one (and none further), so here goes:

Episode 2 is a better, more focused script than the first show, IMO. It's Uhura-centric, but the writer, Henry Alonso Myers, does a remarkably balanced job of giving a number of the cast memorable moments. Ortegas, my current fave, gets to briefly show off a little of her infectious, casual joie de vivre.

The episode introduces Hemmer, a guy with definite charm. Sam Kirk (not a new spoiler, he shows up in the "pilot") recurs here, though he's out of the action fairly early (no, he don't die. That would be Canon Violation. Is forbidden!)

The story is shockingly sciencey and science-fictiony, for Star Trek. The ideas and solutions are not new ones, but that was never Trek's hallmark except as compared to other TV shows - TOS mined old skiffy pulp magazines for its premises (first contact confrontations in deep space, alternate universe, parallel social development, computer warfare between planets, etc.) and it still does.

But for gods' sake, we're two episodes in already and I don't think the catch-all abracadabra term "anomaly" has passed a character's lips. I hope noticing it doesn't jinx it.

Nearly as amazing, and more important to the show's tone, as Trek committing science fiction is that character dialogue is always very much to-the-point and exhibits a nice brevity even when communicating personal concerns and emotions.

Uhura sort of drifted into Starfleet after her life was turned upside down by the deaths of both of her parents. This is a point of friction between her and Spock, who shows thinly-veiled disapproval as well as direct objection to her self-described lack of commitment to the good ol' Star Service.

The Captain's acceptance of his fate was not one-and-done in the first episode, and the way he and people around him are handling it is another pleasant surprise in the writing so far. It turns out that when he says he "experienced it" and felt every second, that includes having come back from the vision with very specific foreknowledge of who the people are that he sacrificed his life for - he knows their names.

But Of Course He Does - this is the leader who had his Discovery bridge crew do a fast roll-call on his first day, remembered every one and addressed them each by name from that moment forward. "Detmer...fly good."

Why the FUCK is the poll scale reversed from the last one?!?!!!1!1

I'm incensed. This is UNACCEPTABLE and I will write letters to express my profound DISPLEASURE. ;)

Also- fuck off. I won't see this for a week, and by then there will be 47 pages of inanities to sift through.

You know, when I created this poll, the software did an autofill of "1 - Excellent" in the text box.

I suppose that's probably some cookie or Evul Google Chrome nannying remembered from my creation of the previous poll.

well I am glad some can admit, episode 1 was not this masterpiece some are making it out to be.

Also how does Kurtzman like to give characters tragic back story, why couldn't uhura have had a happy childhood.

I heard there was a musical episode where Ethan Peck and Celia both sing, is this the episode?

Yes. And the rationale for that is delightful and well-explained, if a little too easy to see coming. It's part of the science/science fiction aspect of the story.

Spock singing, should be interesting since so far, I have found Ethan Peck, a bit too acted in the role.

although I am guessing this is a tribute more to TOS Charlie X where Uhura serenades Spock.

I'm genuinely against the idea of opening episode discussion THIS much in advance.

Watching something freshly aired and then go to the freshly started discussion is a big part of the community experience on this board.

This thread right now is hurting the SNW community way more than it's doing it any favour. By that logic, you can already open separate episode threads for all the first 5 episodes, which in 5 weeks the lowlifes like me who watched it on premiere day can enter 20-pages long, weeks-old discussions that have drifted far away already.

Seriously, I recommend closing this thread until the airing date.

If you must discuss this episode, you can open something like a "first-5-episodes-advanced-screening"-thread where you can discuss them in your exclusive circle.

    But don't do this here.

He's only seen the first 2 episodes. Even said that in the post you quoted:

That early premier some lucky fans went to only showed the first 2 episodes. It's just the press that have seen the first 5.

Does anyone know, just out of curiosity, how many episodes were shown at the "World Premiere" event that was held at the AMC theater in New York on Saturday?

We got into New York about two hours before the Saturday premiere, and it was suggested by a friend that we head over there to see if we could a) get in (very unlikely ) or b) get some pictures of the actors.

But the friend then directed us to the wrong AMC. :guffaw:

I wasn't too disappointed. I wanted dinner at a place we'd been looking forward to, a night's sleep and then over to Paley to see the show we'd actually bought tickets to on Sunday.

How do you know it was Kurtzman's ideas and not the two showrunners?

Kurtzman didn't write this episode, nor is he a showrunner.

Stop blaming him for things he didn't do.

You know, I don't believe there's been another moment since 1986 when critics and fans have been so clearly on the same page about how much they like the latest version of Star Trek.* It's not unanimous, obviously - but the consensus response comes closer to unanimous praise than we've seen in many decades or possibly will ever see again.

It's quite a moment, for a geezing Trek fan to behold. Three months ago I would not have imagined it. :)

*1986 was the Trek movie The Voyage Home. There was not nearly so much agreement one year later concerning the new TV series, The Next Generation.

You are as young as you feel!

Physical Body & Mortality be damned, it's all about "Your Own Personal Reality"!

For everybody's sake; only create the episode threads on the day it's going to air.
There's really not much value in creating it any earlier.

The last time everyone seemed to be on the same page was when Fuller was announced as show runner for Discovery. That didn't turn out so well, this is looking much more hopeful.

I'm in agreement with the fact that it's way too soon to be opening a thread like this just because a few folks have already seen the episodes.
Folks saw both the DISOCVERY & PICARD premier episodes in advance and we still waited till a couple of days beforehand for the threads to drop.

Also, we've kinda-sorta gotten use to seeing and enjoying @Commander Richard posters.

What happens this way is a ton of 'nothing' gets piled up at the threads start for a week, which everybody coming in on the day of the episode has to wade through.

It also seems very Elitist .. hey look I've already seen what you can't.
