The UV shield is basically what Reagan wanted with the Strategic Defense Initiative only 1980s technology couldn't have provided it.

Or perhaps the war never even takes place in the Confed timeline.
Holy cow. So Picard and co.’s intervention will restore WWIII and turn 21st Century Earth into hell, in an attempt to restore the 25th Century they like better?

How can they really know that the Confederation timeline is worse than their old timeline? They didn’t exactly spend a lot of time in it. If there was no WWIII, that’s one thing it has going for it.

I'm getting a lot of use out of this GIF thanks to the current season of Picard...

I imagine Soong will use that as an argument in his favor. The thing is, Picard will point out that while humanity may indeed be saved from WW3, the future involves multiple wide scale genocides on a galactic scale to the point evil Picard outright has the skulls of the leaders of the eradicated races in his home. As bad as WW3 is, it's localized.

This is literally the dilemma our world is facing right now. If we intervene directly in the ongoing war in the news, the aggressor is going to nuclear bomb each and every country who helped his victim to ashes and turn a local horrific war and massacre into a global one.

If the season comes down to “cause WWIII to save the future,” and they can’t properly wrestle with the implications of that because they’re too busy cramming the answers to all their riddles into the last episode… I’m gonna be annoyed.

I agree that it should be addressed. Not least because Teresa's son's life is going to be severely impacted by WW3. In fact, all this talk of Rios staying behind is absurd to anyone who knows the Trek timeline. Unless they specifically avert WW3 in this time travel arc, Rios should be begging Teresa and her son to come back with him.

And Soong would tell him to go fuck himself. So would most other 21st Century humans, including me.

Hey, congratulations, Agent Wells! When the bombs start falling all around you, just remember, you helped Picard save his future!

You are kidding right? In the confederation timeline, the entire Earth becomes a totalitarian militaristic regime which wages wars of genocide against countless species across the galaxy, not to mention extermination of aliens and probably other "undesirables" on Earth. The confederation timeline is basically a what if the Nazis won WW2, conquered the entire planet and then took their war of genocide to the stars. Yes, that is much worse than WW3 followed by a Federation of Planets that brings peace, prosperity and rights to countless species. Not to mention Earth eventually becomes a paradise with no war, no poverty and no disease.

And I totally get that. In fact, it might be why Picard isn't publicizing this as much albeit he and his crew should still be talking about it amongst themselves. Especially like I said the whole Teresa and her son thing.

And the Borg queen should totally bring it up if she gets a chance for her https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NewEraSpeech

What's the deal with being fired and Sanctuary Districts?

I suppose having money in the bank, enough to maintain a dignified retirement keeps you off the Department of Labour's shit list... But Wells seems like he's going to be scooped up any second, because that's his luck, and he just nullified his pension.

2 years in a Sanctuary District, and Wells will be praying for bombs, which are not going to drop till 2053.

They should retcon Wells into being one of those old hobos shown onscreen in First Contact during the Vulcan landing. After the movie is over he starts shouting "I was right, it was worth it, I was right!" and everyone including Cochrane ignores him.

Soong's UV Shields would have blocked the Xindi Probe from turning Florida into a trench.

Sorry.

The rich guys from Trading Places were later homeless bums in Coming to America.

Thematically speaking, it's the worst idea I have heard yet.

I think that if they were heading this way WWIII would be looming larger in the overall story and dialogue. So far it hasn't even been mentioned once, I don't think. They've addressed some of the issues (mostly socioeconomic and environmental issues) but you've gotta think that a global nuclear war would be forefront on the characters' minds in a much more profound way than shown so far. Even if they aren't heading this way (and again, I don't think they are) I'm still kind of surprised that they haven't mentioned it...

A future historian will say that the war began in 2026.

The people of 2026, still 2 years off from where Picard is, will only see the tip of the iceberg when something small happens.

The weakest episode so far. Rios, young Guinan an Picard were fantastic. The Elnor scene didn't add something new, with Raffi still mourning for him, dwelling on a future she wants to be wiped out just to bring him back.

Nice thing to see: the Vulcans on Earth.

It was cool how Rios interacted with Teresa's son.
