I'm not sure, either! There are some other clips shown that have Chapel wearing one and some others. I'm thinking they stopped at the Disney park on Alpha Centauri and did some pin trading.

Universal Translator, maybe? It's use and existence as a physical device in TOS was inconsistent at best, ranging from a big horkin' vape pen to implanted babel fish. Then DSC muddied the waters further with using an open communicator in "The Vulcan Hello". The only thing that ever really made sense was the TNG comm badge.

In looking through the trailers, and a few scenes in the series trailer that just came out, different members of the crew are wearing them, some all characters have them on at the same time. Whatever it is, expect it to be on sale by the series premiere!

I notice that Una and Uhura seem to wear dresses with black side panels and tights, while La'an and Ortegas seem to be wearing identical outfits to the men.
