Early Promotional Uniforms

If I may hijack my own thread, there was some debate recently about what the impetus was for Kirk's green wraparound tunic. I think I remembered reading it was created as another visual cue to tell the Kirks part in The Enemy Within? Am I remembering right?

I don't remember for sure, but it sounds logical.

That's right. The first appearance of a green wraparound was in "The Enemy Within," and it was apparently created to help us tell the two Kirk's apart.

It's next use was in "Charlie X," where it led to a huge continuity gaff as Kirk got on the elevator in the wraparound but arrived on the bridge in the gold tunic.

Kirk has uniforms stashed all over the ship.

That's for sure. While staying ashore in "Court Martial," he wore three different ones: the green wrap for Stone's office, the gold for the restaurant and his hotel room, and the green full dress uniform for court.

Plus he wore three different uniforms after taking command in TMP.

It's why Rand left. She didn't sign up to be his dresser.

“And Captain said this one goes in the overloaded phaser disposal chute across the hall….”

It was indeed a visual cue to separate the two Kirks from one another. EDIT: @ZapBrannigan beat me to it!

Further, I hate that the green wrap is referred to as the "belly shirt" and popular myth has its creation to hide Shatner's weight fluctuations.

Well, I own an Anovos replica and it's a very form fitting outfit. And it's an athletic cut. It's hardly a "belly shirt". It ain't hiding anything.

Apparently, the suede wrap Charlie Evans wore was an earlier prototype of Kirk's green wrap.

Speaking of the early promotional uniforms, Dr. M'Benga's tunic in the upcoming STRANGE NEW WORLDS resembles them.

Sounds like the turbolift has some of the same properties of the bat cave.

His arrowhead emblem can occasionally flip to the other side of his tunic too. Rank hath its privileges.

That's how Kirk made sure everyone knew their place. "I'm responsible for all you and I still got time to hit the gym. GET WITH IT, PEOPLE."
