So was Rand being considered more as a lead?

She was considered to be Miss Kitty to James Kirk's Matt Dillion. And contracted for more episodes than the other day players (@Maurice can jump in with deets more than I can and correct me if I've misremembered).

So it was thought she'd have a more importantly role being the closest to the captain after Spock.

Her guarantee was for 7 out of the first 13 episodes—the same number as DeForest Kelley and George Takei for that initial program cycle. (Doohan was guaranteed 5 out of 13.)

Thanks for sharing! Until now, I had never noticed that they weren't the "classic" TOS uniforms, except for Yeoman Rand's neckpiece.

Besides that, the three photos look great. Colorful and optimistic, inviting along for a journey into Outer Space.

I'm glad they changed the rank braid system for the TOS series. The old Cage and WNMHGB braids were too simple and didn't provide enough rank distinction to make in-universe sense (i.e. no rank, one bar Lt. and Captain rank, two bar Captain rank). I think some say there's gold and silver bars and a more frilly bars, too, but I can't see the difference even in HD video.

In "The Cage" there was one character with a voided or ladder-like stripe.

Also in "The Cage," silver stripes were worn on the blue field jackets. In WNMHGB, all the stripes appear to be the same gold type.

I like the minimalistic look from the early episodes, and even all of original Trek. The uniforms in the first two seasons of TNG were also understated. Even the dress uniforms for both series were more reserved. The characters could tell the person's rank without broadcasting it.
Starting with Khan, TNG season 3 and all series afterward, the uniforms have been too bombastic and overtly militaristic, replete with epaulets, etc.

Edit: I just realized that the TNG movie uniforms were pretty minimalistic as well.

Really? The addition of a Nehru collar and the elimination of one shoulder stripe are all it takes for the TNG uniforms to go from understated to overtly militaristic? That is a thin line.

I admit the newer TNG uniforms were not that far off, but in the first few episodes of the 3rd season the jackets were puffy and with shoulder pads to make the actors look more bulky and muscular. It had the effect of making them slightly more ostentatious than the earlier uniforms. They soon made them slightly less bulky. Even the Nehru collars gave them a more militaristic look.

I always thought the look they were going for in TOS was football jerseys, cheerleader outfits and go-go boots. The opposite of a military uniform.

The shirts seem to be basic pullovers, the kind associated with sailors. Not seeing football jersey there.

The women's outfits were pure 60s sex appeal or liberation according to some. But SF has never been a stranger to that.

I wouldn't say the 3rd season uniforms were overtly militaristic, but they were a bit more stuffy with the collars and the more prominent shoulder pads (although the season 1-2 ones also had shoulder pads).

I confess I actually prefer collars, shoulder pads and epaulettes. In TMP people's favourite uniform is Admiral Kirk's dress uniform. I think all the TMP uniforms would have looked better with those additions. At least the rank of your enlisted personnel can be seen with epaulettes.
