The 'microbrains' on the terraforming planet in early TNG also tried to communicate by forming shapes in the sand...

There are a few issues with this episode, though...first if all, the ship is somewhere in or near the gamma quadrant and they stumble on a detengo ship? And not even a random one, but the one owned by Dal’s foster mother?! Speaking of this, it was obvious she had sold him, but ok, makes sense...by 2383 ferendo females can own ships...or can’t them?
It's nice that they left the gewenhu designs as they were. :D

I liked Dal way better in this episode. I liked it a bit more than last week's. I'm intrigued by the mystery. Great alien stuff in this ep. I'm a bit confused as to where the heck the are - boarding the Delta and Gamma I guess, but I think that should have been made more clear.

Home Soil:

LAFORGE: Whoa. What is it? Nothing but basic elements. Inorganic. No carbon. Sandy texture. Those flashes are almost musical. I see colour variations and rhythms in complex harmonies.

BENSEN: As the building of the terraforming station went forward, the patterns in the sand ceased being random and became very specific. Geometric shapes suddenly appearing, disappearing, changing location, changing size.

It's an ok episode, I found myself losing focus part way through because it was playing out kind of predictably, but the twist save was nice and delivers on the opener's Chekhov's gun.

The hook is confusing because it seems like the range and time shouldn't work for a Ferengi in a Marauder to have made it to the Delta Quadrant the long way, but I guess she had been traveling that way for decades and then circled back. It still doesn't seem right. It also seems like her Maurader is extra small. More interesting is the fact that the captain is a Ferengi Woman which indicates she must be extremely capable despite needing help, or a patsy, to get what she wanted, and ultimately failing.

I was dismissive of people saying Prodigy is like Star Wars but this is the first episode where I got strong vibes of that. The cubic robot speaking untranslated alien language and being treated like a person is very Star Wars, as are the cargo ramps. Most of the episode they seemed to forget about transporters.

I have the impression the reason the Ferengi uses her ramp is actually a show-it-don't-tell-it explanation of why Dal doesn't know about transporters, the Marauder's transporters must have been broken, sold off, or were stolen. We also know Ferengi look down on engineers and scientists, so doing anything but the bare minimum would be beneath her, especially paying for repairs.

We can also infer that her lack of transporters is also why she was unwilling to attempt the theft of the crystals on her own. She had no safe way in and out, but with patsies as a distraction she had a decent chance, though her impulsive theft seems uncharacteristic for what must be an experienced and capable pirate/trader/etc. Perhaps that's what gets her into and out of trouble on a regular basis.

As for the first contact itself, kind of predictable, but it also cranked up the weirdness really nicely. The aliens and their techniques are interesting. I'm iffy on the communication explanation since it makes it sound like they are just using different sound frequencies than what we use, but the rest is believable enough in Trek's normal soft scifi fashion.

Also Trek Yards has pointed out a few times how the ship looks very Star Trek 2009, and I agree with them, and they think it indicates transdimensional origins, which I think is a stretch at this point, but this beaming effect used is straight out of 2009 Trek. The former I could dismiss to some degree, but the beaming effect is a little too much. Now I find myself agreeing with Trek Yards that the ship could be interdimensional and transtemporal, though I still want more evidence of the former.

It is also interesting how Janeway is, in part, upset by the botched first contact because the crew had no pressing need to perform the mission for their own sake. She has a problem with it because it was personal to Dal and left a bad impression. And that's interesting because none of that has to do with "destiny" nor Prime Directive dogma.

but she obviously had transporters: she uses them to steal the protostar’s cargo needed for the cloaking device to work.

Hm. Yep. I like the idea of Nandi being a pre-Rom Ferengi who slipped through the wormhole over a decade ago and never looked back. A whole quadrant to do her thing without the FCA breathing down her neck for earning profit.

The Ferengi began venturing into the Gamma Quadrant and Delta Quadrants via the Bajoran and Barzan Wormholes during TNG and DS9. Profit knows no bounds!

We don’t have enough information for it to be a plot hole. It’s not implausible the transporters could’ve been offline when Dal was under her care/living on the Damsel. If it was just Dal and Nandi on the Damsel, maybe the ship needed expertise to maintain certain functions and devices that she didn’t have until she got Pik-Pox to get it running?

There are many potential explanations.

The Barzan Wormhole was not stable.
It was shifting its end in the Delta Quadrant all the time. When VOY encountered it along with Arridor and Kol, the Ferengi feedback pulse destabilized it which resulted in both its entry/exit points to shift uncontrollably... meaning it was no longer possible to force call the wormhole back to VOY... and even if it did, its AQ end was no longer where it was... it was shifting erratically on both ends... so, no I don't think Norandi could have used the Barzan Wormhole... this seems more likely to have occurred after discovery of the Bajoran Wormhole.

The main possibility here I can think of is the Bajoran Wormhole... but Dominion space is nowhere near the Gamma/Delta border of the galaxy... she would have had to travel far away from the Bajoran Wormhole and into the DQ... which I suppose is possible... but would for example 10 years be enough time to do that?

Damn, it's a plot hole then.

Not necessarily. Its possible that Norandi never told Dal about her ship having transporters. And given how she behaved around him and sold him off into slavery... its likely she never really trusted Dal because she may have wanted to keep a 'trump card' a secret for herself to use against him.

As for Norandi not using the transporter to get away... well, she needed to use Dal to get her hands on the crystal... and that could be potentially classified as a plot hole, but there may have been other factors at play that we didn't know about. After all, its only about 24 mins per episode...

The Barzan Wormhole was not stable.
It was stable on the Barzan side more than long enough for a sneaky Ferengi to get through.
She had no real prospects of making a decent living without getting caught eventually in the Alpha quadrant.
Constantly having to look over her shoulder and worrying about someone she traded with turning her in for a profit.
Perhaps she felt that her odds would increase significantly enough to justify taking the risk.
