I agree with some others that the real issue with the Klingon redesign was they decided to go "full mask." This meant that the Klingon actors couldn't do much other than mumble through their lines (made harder with the teeth) and act as best as they could using their eyeballs and body language. I mean, there were plenty of reports on the issues Mary Chieffo had with the prosthetics (particularly in Season 1). She had to overdub almost all of her lines, because it was impossible to enunciate. And even when doing normal dialogue (not yelling or anything), her prosthetic lips would pull away from her real ones, necessitating touch up. It was just dumb of the production designers to create a makeup system that required the actors to make as few movements with their face as possible while saying their lines. And the weirdest thing is, on Discovery at least they continued to double down on this, with even the Orion's last season inexplicably having full green silicone masks rather than just green bodypaint - even though there are no facial features Orions have which set them apart from humans.

IMHO if what they really wanted was a much more alien look, they should have done mocap on the core Klingon characters out-of-makeup and then had CGI augmentation fix their look. It would have cost much more, but would have resulted in much, much better performances.

The Kurtzmann and JJ stuff will become "true Trek" in the future when another version of Trek comes out in 20 years :guffaw:
Hopefully this is the last round of new Trek.
And people will accept that it’s OK to criticize the parts you don’t like. Hardly anyone bats an eye at the complaints about the TMP uniforms.
Easier to accept when the positive parts are shared too.

I like Star Trek V, but I accept that most of the commentary will be negative. That’s OK, and it doesn’t affect my enjoyment one whit. I can enjoy it despite its flaws.

As a TOS fan, it’s weird to see what seem like substantial (and growing) chunks of fandom who have never watched the original series and can’t bring themselves to sit through it. Many don’t have a kind word for it, or they disparage it, often baselessly, to defend their preferred Trek. But, hey, their loss. That’s a natural effect of such a long-running franchise: Most fans will have a particular fondness for whatever series made them Trek fans, and everything else will be second best or not my Star Trek. That will be the case for Discovery, too, I’m sure.

TOS is the best for me. Always will be.

It was billed as a prequel to TOS. Prequels require an overarching structure more than sequels, or fandom will complain about canon.
No, they don't. It's a story like any other. All a prequel requires is taking place prior to a previous installment. It has no obligation to fill in the blanks.
why not try to address all of those loose threads?
Because then it becomes a game of connect the dots and not a story.

No, I don't like the new Klingon look.

I guess I can understand the need to make the Klingons more alien, but IMHO this is one thing that really was unnecessary. I mean, I realize that shitting all over the Rick Berman era is the new cool thing in Trek, but come on.

At least they dropped the one thing I hated MOST about the DSC Klingons - the elongated heads. I fucking HATED those.

That said: If future episodes show a mixture of DSC Klingons and old-school ones (hell, even the QuchHa' from TOS), I'm totally fine with that!

Sorry, I think I overreacted. I shoulda just said "all over the Berman era Klingons".

srsly, it really does look like they went out of their way to make the DSC Klingons look as un-Bermanish as they could. They didn't just make a couple of tweaks, it looks almost like a whole new species. I didn't think they looked Klingon AT ALL.

But as I said, at least there's no elongated heads anymore.

I doubt they had the Berman Klingons in their sites when doing the revamp.
They have bumpy foreheads, like bladed weapons and drone on about being Klingon. What's more Klingon than that?

Indeed. And even within Trek there is room for artistic exploration. Which is what was done.

I think originally they wanted DSC to be a complete visual reboot. Then they decided they wanted to make PIC, which followed up on TNG, and then they were screwed. They then had to backtrack, first due to the negative reaction to how the Klingons looked and because now they could no longer do the complete visual reboot.

Intra-series, DSC was stuck between a rock a hard place. They already established how Klingons looked in their series, so they had to compromise. They couldn't completely go back to the TNG Look, so they got rid of the pointy heads, toned some other stuff down, and added hair. Then, once they wrapped the Klingon storyline, they didn't want to bother with it anymore.

I didn't like the look of the DSC Klingons. The four nostrils and overly elaborate necks were overkill and the bald heads made me think of Into Darkness. It wasn't a deal-breaker, but this was the one change DSC made that I wasn't too thrilled about.

Let us appreciate the Klingons through the ages.

My initial response to the DSC Klingons hasn’t changed. They look like they were left in the oven too long and overcooked.

It’s so odd, because JJ’s Bad Robot production company perfected the look in Into Darkness. Kurtzmam (a JJ acolyte and co-writer on 2 of the Kelvin movies) with his production company Secret Hideout altered the look so much for a pre-TOS and post-ENT show. Why?

It was Bryan Fuller's directive to redesign the Klingons, not Kurtzman's. Fuller wanted them to be more alien looking for some reason.

The problem was that the DIS team never explained why the Klingons looked that way
It doesn't need an explanation, just like how the TMP Klingon redesign didn't need one for 26 years.

then Season 2 retconned the Baldness in a half assed but understandable way.
There was never an explanation why in Season 2 itself, only comments from the make up designer and actors. The explanation didn't even originate from the writers, it came from Glen Hatrick, the makeup designer.

In the actual show there was only a passing mention from Burnham about the Klingons growing out their hair again.

At least they dropped the one thing I hated MOST about the DSC Klingons - the elongated heads.
They didn't completely, there were still a few of them in Season 2.

Bryan Fuller?
The JJ Films and Kurtzman shows have a lot of make up people in common. Including Neville Page.
