Some of the biggest pieces of information and clarification about the season’s story arc we’ve gotten yet came from a new interview with
Kobayashi’s author, Aaron J. Waltke
at TrekMovie. There the time travel element many of us had predicted was explicitly referenced, and we learned a little bit of clarifying info about the casting announcement from last year.
We also learn the crew made up of Jason Alexander as the Tellarite Dr. Noum, Daveed Diggs as the Andorian Commander Tysess, and Jameela Jamil as the Trill Ensign Ascencia, are not in fact Chakotay’s old crew from the Protostar. Many of us naturally predicted they would be, but it turns out that isn’t going to be the case.

Regarding Chakotay, when I interviewed the Hagemans, I asked if Beltran and Chakotay and the other actors announced at the same time were the original crew of the Protostar, and they said they weren’t. Were they just protecting a spoiler, or is there some nuance to this?
Aaron J. Waltke said:
In that instance it was a miscommunication–they misheard and thought the question was whether Doctor Noum (Jason Alexander), Ensign Asencia (Jameela Jamil), and Commander Tysess (Daveed Diggs) were the former crew of the Protostar. I can confirm that they are not Chakotay’s crew on the Protostar, but Chakotay was indeed the former captain. We couldn’t clarify that until now without it being a spoiler.
That got me thinking, who
will this crew be, then? And I figure my best guess right now is that they’re the crew sent to get the Protostar from the Delta Quadrant.
My working theory is that Chakotay and the original crew of the Protostar are sent back in time by the anomaly mentioned his recording in
Kobayashi to over 17 years ago, possibly 2 decades or more. They’re boarded, as mentioned in the recording from Chakotay that mentioned the anomaly, and the aliens boarding are the Vau N’Akat.
Somehow Chakotay and the Protostar crew end up getting blamed for the destruction of Solum, or its people, the Vau N’Akat, leaving the Diviner one of/the last of his kind. Chakotay knows that he should try to preserve the timeline and hides the Protostar inside Tars Lamora before taking the long way back to the Federation, where after maybe 25 years he makes it home to the Federation to explain what happened, and he’s sent to retrieve the Protostar from the Delta Quadrant along with this new crew.
And
maybe the anomaly that Chakotay mentioned is somehow also an explanation for the many typically Alpha and Beta Quadrant species being in the Delta Quadrant.
Is it almost certainly wrong? Yes! But maybe pieces of it will line up!
