Spoilers Starfleet Academy: First-Year Review 🎓

  • Thread starter Capt. James T(roll) Kirk
  • Start date
Alex Kurtzman has said he wanted to make the show more like Harry Potter than Star Trek. Kurtzman doesn’t like Star Trek and it shows. Paramount apparently doesn’t understand or appreciate its own product because the keep putting people in charge of Trek that don’t like or understand Trek. JJ Abrams said he didn’t really like Star Trek wanted to make it more like Star Wars. Starfleet Academy is mor akin to 90210 than Star Trek. In every scene we have to stop and talk about our feelings and our teenage angst . They have a complete misunderstanding of who the Betazoids are. I think they saw part of one episode of TNG where Troi is talking about being empathic and assumed from that that all Betazoids are empathic even though they were full telepaths. Troi wasn’t fully telepathic because she was half human. Because Kurtzman and crew don’t like Star Trek, they just skimmed an episode or two of TNG without ever really getting into it. The first season of SA is an example of what happens when you put people in charge of a franchise that don’t like the franchise.
I could go on, but suffice it to say that I haven’t found anything of value in S/A.
Feel better now? I still love the show and can't wait for season two!

Tell me you haven't watched Starfleet Academy without telling me you haven't watched Starfleet Academy.

He, to my knowledge, never said those exact words but he wanted to make the techers as much a beloved part of the show like the ones in The Harry Potter franchise. But I can only name Holly Hunter and Jet and I don't remember Hunter's character name. No other teachers pop out to me. So he did fail at that.

Here you can see what he says.

Nala Ake, Lura Thok, Jett Reno, The Doctor, Illa Dax, Sylvia Tilly...

Thank you for naming them, but except for Jett and Holly Hunter none popped out. Despite the Doctors great story, and I had to be reminded he was in ther series, they all were just background characters with no depth. I did enjoy the series. Kurtzman wanted the teachers to be loved like the ones in Harry Potter he failed. That failure didn't cause the loss of the show. But it did show that Paramount didn't know what they wanted to do. Maybe it is time to put Star Trek on the shelf for 5 to 10 years, and then get people who know and love Trek to take over.

I really liked Starfleet Academy and I had to mute the trek subs on reddit because of the "fans" tearing it appart because it wasn't "for them" as if a Trek being written for a new audience is treason or something and think it's message that yes, things can go horribly wrong and it sucks for the people who have to come in after that and deal with it, but that if they come together it is possible to set things right is absolutely timely and the best message needed right now for current and hopefully new Star Trek fans.

Also, Holly Hunter is a chaos elf and I love her as Nahla.

Just for the fan service?

Just so we can have boundry pushing, woke Trek. People who know trek but are willing to take chances. SNW's Sub Space Rhapsody and Level 5 Transporter accident are both imaginative, and risk taking. Both came out great. That's why. Currently real world politics is interfering and cancelling the openness because it is "woke" - a gay Klingon, a bridge crew of all woman.

So we need writers who understand Trek.

It got cancelled because the company was sold. That's it.

Woke has nothing to do with it and is a nonsense complaint. Star Trek has been liberal in its politics but hardly cutting edge since TOS so expecting boundary pushing is too little too late now.

Take it from someone who was there.

As for members of a warrior culture being gay, nobody tell him about the Spartans...

Oh joy, another “woke Trek” diatribe.
Trek is woke. And that is how it should be.

wait untill season 2 comes out in 2027
I admit I was skeptical of STA, but it was well done and it avoided the HP professors nonesense. These cadets are being trained to explore, fight, and work together.

Yes, Paramount was bought. The buyer, David Ellison, is changing CBS to be more conservative and Trump friendly so he can get to aquire Warner Brothers Discovery. Part of that means eliminating woke content. Star Trek is that, always has been. But Ellison wants his merger so if people say Trek is too woke, he'll shelve it or hire writers who will give us bland Trek. No gay anything, no metophores on transgendered people. Their will definitely be nothing against authoritarian states.

I'd rather Trek be shelved than turned into a conservative tool.

if star trek does return again its most likley that production will be trump right wingers and at the same time the cast members will also most likely be trump right wingers

in other words when the star trek universe does return the biggest heels aka super villains aka bad people in both hollywood history and entertainment history will take over the star trek universe

It is shelved.

I doubt the politics of it all so that's all I think about that.

My wishes are that Trek ceases production. It's not worth the fan hand wringing. Star Trek may have been liberal at one time but in the 80s, 90s and 00s it languished. It's not as "woke" as it's reputation insists from TOS.

No. Just no.

I'm slightly right of center and even I don't think Star Trek will change even if it does gets produced. See, politics shift and the regime will change before all the lawsuits and mergers are done so this idea of the villains taking over is to my mind hyperbolic and ignores the reality of business and politics.

Politics is cyclical. Business is opportunistic.
