News Coronavirus Pandemic Information and Support Group

So the province of Alberta has decided to do away with virtually ALL their pandemic measures by the end of August. They had already removed indoor gathering limits at the beginning of July, and I believe most provincial masking guidelines have also been removed too. As of Thursday, close contacts of a infected person are no longer legally required to isolate (it is merely “recommended”), contact tracers will no longer notify close contacts, and asymptomatic testing will no longer be recommended. As of August 16, infected people will no longer be required to isolate (still “recommended”), and symptomatic testing will be reduced. For August 31, all COVID testing will be stopped except for very severe cases, and masking requirements will be removed for schools, public transit, and most continuing care facilities. They are basically ending the entire Test, Trace, Isolate paradigm.

Meanwhile, Alberta has one of the lower vaccination rates in the country, PHAC has indicated that we are on the verge of a Delta-driven fourth wave, and the American CDC has released findings that show that vaccinated people, although much less likely to be symptomatic, are still able to spread Delta at the same rate as unvaccinated people.

To quote a certain other space-based franchise, “I’ve got a bad feeling about this.”

I am now having trouble with my second son refusing the vaccine because his girlfriend told him it is unsafe. I told him if he wants to continue live in my house he has to make an appointment for the Pfizer vaccine. He kept going on about blood clots and I said the blood clots were from the AstraZeneca not the Pfizer vaccine. He carried on about me taking ‘his freedoms away’. I told him he is free not to get the vaccine but not if he wanted to stay in my house. He is 41 years old BTW.

My youngest son is under 40 so cannot get the vaccine yet but he is more than willing to get it as soon as it become available for him.

edited to say - I was just able to get my youngest booked in for the Pfizer later in the month. It seems he can get it under 40 because he is disabled. I was able to get the appointment g on a day that he will have his Disability Support Worker with him.

Yeah we have that issue in our family with siblings spouting all kinds of random bullshit that they find online. It is frustrating.

He is 41 years old BTW.
if he were one of my daughters (who aren't that old and none lives at my place) he needed to find a really good reason to no get thrown out anyway.

My son is mildly intellectually disabled, so he does not do that well on his own. His girlfriend, who is not disabled, is the one who has ‘researched’ Covid. I wish he would just move in with her but it doesn’t seem that that is going to happen.

My youngest son has cerebral palsy so he also lives at home. He is far more sensible than either of his brothers,

that counts as a really good reason

I'm in the same age group, and in Canada we've had to wait a long time as in many months, for the vaccines to be made available, by age group a little at a time. I had been patiently waiting like many others in Canada when my turn to register for a dose came along and was ecstatic by the time the day had come, and by the time I was ready for my second dose, I felt like I had done my duty, and I also felt very grateful. To see someone like your son refuse it because he prefers to believe the lies is sad.

Alberta premier Jason Kenney is actually quite capable of making terrible decisions all on his own. ;)

Although in this particular case, everyone keeps insisting the plan was developed by the Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw. But pretty much the entire medical community is saying what a terrible, wrong-headed path this is, so the prevailing thought (whether correct or not) seems to be that the plan is actually government-driven.

I find my eldest son’s stance to be far more annoying than my second son’s. My second son has concrete thinking so it is hard for him to understand what Covid might do to him or others especially as there has been so little Covid in Tasmania. Even when we were in lockdown he seemed to be somewhat oblivious to the reasons for all the rules.

My eldest on the other hand has the capacity to understand. For some reason he has started to believe in a lot of woo over the last few years including using astrology as a reason to explain things that go wrong in his life, becoming an anti-vaxxer, criticising me for eating mixed food ie eating carbs and proteins together.

He says that vaccines are poison and that he won’t put poison into his body. Yet he is a smoker and a heavy drinker. I am beginning to think that he is simply trying to do easy things to ‘improve’ his health (not getting vaccinated, not mixing foods) rather than having to deal with the addictions that are actually harming him.

The reason we have had so little Covid in Tasmania is due to our remoteness and the fact that we have had double closed borders at times (both the Australian and the Tasmanian borders being closed). When we did have an outbreak early in 2020 we had triple level of border closure with the three regions of Tasmania being closed to each other. We cannot maintain this forever and will only be able to open up completely when enough people have been vaccinated. I have tried explaining this to both sons as they both seem to think covid isn’t and will not be a problem here in the future.

Imagine what it is like for me, I constantly feel like I am knocking my head against a brick wall when I talk to him.

Anyway I have told him that he is barred from visiting us for Christmas unless he is fully vaccinated. Maybe this means I will not have to put up with all his silly nonsense and can enjoy Christmas more.

I suspect very little "research" has actually been done aside from reading a few headlines. Sure there have been a few cases of bloodclots from the Oxford-AZ vaccine but I think the genuine facts go something more along the lines you have a higher chance of dying from covid than receiving the Oxford-AZ vaccine.

I even tried ro explain to both of them that they would be getting to Pfizer vaccine not the AstraZeneca adding that 10 million doses have been given in Australia and there has only been 6 deaths link to the vaccines and all of those have been to the AstraZeneca vaccine.

I also pointed out there is a chance of blood clotting when women take the Pill or when people fly even if there is a difference in the type of blood clotting. I asked her why she did both of those things if she is so concerned about blood clotting. She shrugged her shoulders and said these vaccines were different as they are experimental. I then tried to tell her why these vaccines were able to be developed as quickly as they were and how much worse Covid was to any vaccine. She said that we do not know the long term affect of the vaccines and I tried to tell her about long Covid but again she just shook her head and went on about not taking any chances with the vaccine. She told me I had been stupid to get the AstraZeneca vaccine and I might have serious long term problems caused by the vaccine.

It seems that she also does not approve of the flu vaccine either so my son is now refusing to get that as well.

Simply explain that she is part of the COVID experiment- the control group that ultimately will experience the results of catching COVID without the protection of the vaccine. She'll unfortunately join the growing group of people that start begging for the vaccine as they're about to be put on the ventilator.
