Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

One reason I didn't share the image on Instagram was because of the sneaking suspicion that CBS and Paramount lawyers would be watching social media and having images taken down.

Doubtful. Ship weapons can also serve as point-defense weapons, as seen in DS9 (and ST09), and were quite effective. Not even really sure why they brought the Marquis Raiders into that fight. Unless you have a million swarmers to bring to bear against a target (like we saw in STB) to overwhelm that protective weapon shield, there’s really no point, outside of the “kewl” factor.
Yup. While I love space dog fights it doesn't fit Star Trek as a larger combat strategy.

It would be nice if she wasn't.

I think '09 shows you can do more with Uhura.

She's a singer... so I'm pretty sure that she is Uhura...

Celia Rose Gooding is an American actress and singer. She is best known for originating the role of Frankie Healy in the Broadway musical, Jagged Little Pill, for which they won a 2021 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and was nominated for a 2020 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical.

I don't know why she'd NEED to be Uhura but...they probably want to hook as many people as possible with the tagline: "Hey, remember [fill in the name] from the cool 2009 movie? Well, they're back!"

Because CBS Trek is niche and designed to draw in people already fans of the property. They want those sweet, sweet subscription dollars. Uhura probably translates into a good amount of subscriptions.

I just hope she doesn't end up overshadowing Martin-Green, Discovery fans would get sore with that. Some already seem put off by Beckett Mariner.

Doesn't matter. She's a defined character with a defined arc - more or less.

It's hard to imagine that these people signed a talent like Celia Gooding just to do that, or that she'd take it. This show will consume big blocks of her time - it's not a movie every three or four years.

Could be wrong.

Uhura's cultural importance is a big part of why Star Trek is so celebrated. I realize they wouldn't be achieving that again, but honoring it and giving an iconic television character more of a life is still sweet.

One might argue it'd be a good opportunity to show she's capable of way more than just telephone operator.

Saldana was a good start, but even then she was mostly defined by her relationship with a man throughout all three films.

See, fans always seem to think that all actors are just champing at the bit to wear a Star Trek costume.
