Nope, just Godzilla vs Kong. Dune is still in negotiations.

Other way around. Netflix and Apple+ have made repeated offers for No Time to Die, but Sony feels their offers were too low.

The MGM Chairman went to streaming services requesting offers, none offered enough as MGM wanted $650-$800 mil as they still had to buy out the Broccoli's back end participation in it and the highest offer was $400 mil so he gave up.

Edit to add:. Sony doesn't even have Bond anymore, that's why it was moved against Mobius....

Latest trailer for HBO Max starts off with a clip from Dune, after the last trailer contained none after it came out they didn't have the rights to advertise HBO Max using Dune. Might mean they're closer to a deal and Legendary signed off on them using imagery:shrug:

Still has the caveat that the film line up may change.

New commercial for HBO Max digital & theatrical release.

Dune is changed to a split second blink and you'll miss it title card in the middle of the other announcements, with the caveat still on the ads that the line up can change.

Otherwise, not much new on it except that with the delay in release Zimmer has been given additional time to work on the score, and is still recording it.

I think the possibility of a franchise has become so diminished now by the delay that we might not even see the concluding part of the movie, never mind Dune Messiah or Children of Dune. God Emperor, Heretics, or Chapter House were probably never realistically in the frame. We should probably be thankful we'll never see Paul running away to join the circus.

I don't know if it's still the plan, but the HBO series at one point was supposed to be based on the Sisterhood book, which I've never read - Paul running off to join the space circus was my breaking point.

THP have been trying to get people to make movies/TV shows based off of the new books for 20 years, wouldn't be surprised if it was part of the deal - you get to make Dune, but you have to make one of the new books too...

My impression is that Villeneuve has to consult with Brian Herbert but I don't think there is any commitment or money to adapt the Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson novels as movies. I was obviously not party to the negotiations so I have no real idea. If any of those do get made, let's hope we at least get adaptations as far as Children of Dune before their revisionist nonsense is greenlit. Some were tolerable but others I try to forget I ever read.

The last word we had on anything post the first movie was in Dec when Villeneuve said that unless shit changed the whole franchise was probably DOA so at this point I wouldn't expect even the 2nd movie. Fingers crossed that will change yet.

Sisterhood of Dune is a sequel to the Legends trilogy, and is supposed to be about how the Bene Gesserit is founded by Vorian Atreides' daughter (I think; it's been years since I read it).

It's utter crap, of course. The Bene Gesserit existed well before the Butlerian Jihad, according to the Dune Encyclopedia.

If you're talking about when Paul and Bronso of Ix ran off and joined the Jongleurs, that's in Winds of Dune (sequel to Paul of Dune).

This small-universe thing that KJA/BH have going is so ridiculous. It's like every character must somehow be tied to the Atreides through blood, loyalty, or some other way. Bronso of Ix can't just be someone who greatly dislikes how the religion of Muad'Dib has changed everything and what it stands for, noooOOOooo... he and Paul have to be childhood friends, too...

You mean the Herbert Limited Partnership? Of course. I can tell exactly which scenes KJA wrote that he imagined as scenes in a movie. That doesn't make them good scenes, of course. That whole trek to the shrine of Duke Leto's skull, for instance... yeah, that one was designed for the big screen. KJA might just as well have put director's notes into the text.

Movies were being discussed back when the dunenovels.com forum was still active and Byron was running it, trying to keep the OH and Prequelite factions from verbally eviscerating each other. Things got very tense between that forum and Arrakeen... I'm glad the group of Spanish fans who tried to make their own movie but got a C&D when they mistakenly told KJA/BH about it were able to join Arrakeen for awhile. They were a friendly group, and so creative.

Their revisionist bullshit started in House Atreides, and went downhill from there.

So he expects to only do part of the book?

Yes I was just shortening The Herbert Partnership to THP.

I meant the last book I read was where Paul ran off to join the space circus. It broke me. I couldn't read any more after that, so I never read Sisterhood.

They weren't subtle about their desire to have movies made of the new books vs the old. After the Morel production fell through they were only interested in selling licenses based on their work. Which obviously came to nothing because who wants them? Nobody.

Villeneuve expected to make two movies on the first book and direct the first two hours of the TV series, basically being the creative in charge of the franchise. But when WB announced the digital and theatrical same day release without even discussing it with him or Legendary he wrote an open letter that unless something drastic changes he expects the franchise is dead, the one movie is all we will see this iteration.

4 months later and nothing different has been said ye. I'm sure negotiations are still ongoing, there is still 7 months left. Here's hoping stuff works out

The idea that part 2 of what looks like a really good adaptation might never happen and that wankfest Snyderfest got a lavish treatment really sticks in my craw.

The only Snyder movies I liked are Dawn of the Dead and 300. I expected Justice League to be a complete and utter self indulgent train wreck.

    But...

    I hate to admit it...

    It was kinda good:cardie:

Still had a lot of problems but I kinda enjoyed it:shrug:

Ah, okay. We just called it "HLP" at Arrakeen.

It's like they never actually read the original books and understood that there are some fixed points that must not be changed. One of them is that Paul was born on Caladan and didn't leave it until the crossing to Arrakis when he was 15.

Morel production? I don't remember hearing anything about that.

KJA/BH and the rest of the HLP aren't too bright when it comes to fan activities. They shut down the Dune stuff at Second Life, and so the participants had to gut it of all references to Dune. They shut down the Spanish fans who wanted to do a Spanish fan film of Dune. They made the mistake of letting the HLP know, however, and so only a handful of people saw the actual trailer on YouTube before it was removed. I saw some still photos, storyboards, and costume sketches, and they were really well done.

Some authors and copyright owners are death on fan fiction or films. They don't understand what Lucas understood about Star Wars: As long as people are doing it, it means they're still interested in the franchise and will continue buying the official licensed stuff. In the meantime, it's free advertising.

    Studio politics... :(

Should have just filmed the two parts back to back (as they did with Back To Future II and III) - you still have crew, cast in place, required sets are standing so time and money isn't wasted spinning production backup.

I didn't visit Arrakeen very ofte. I helped run another hugely popular site during the late 90's/early 2000's. That kept me busy enough.

Pierre Morel took over the mid 2000's adaptation after Peter Berg quit/was fired (I can't remember which) when he couldn't break the script. Morel also failed. There's a ton of stuff online from the production, all from Berg's era as nothing really happened after Morel stepped in.

The partnership was super litigious. I remember the fan film as well. I also remember Brian stopping by fan run text RPG's on websites (basically a website with multiple message boards, each message board representing a different planet/faction, and people created characters and wrote stories interacting with each other in the duniverse) and applauding them, and then sending his lawyers after them a couple months later for infringment and shutting them all down. Were they in violation? Probably not but no site could afford the effort or money to fight them, so they all just shut down.

Too much of a financial risk. They only do that when they are certain the first movie won't flop.

Edit:. Before someone replies with LOTR, fair point, I dunno how they managed to convince the financiers to pull that off - but it also wasn't the 2nd attempt at an adaptation after the first one was a massive box office bomb
