I think the best endgame for Michael, right at this moment, is for her to just quit Starfleet.

Don't get me wrong, she can still be involved. Still be the main character even. Just not in that blue uniform. She and Book should just be mercenaries together doing whatever they think is right, while also being civilian consultants on the Discovery.

I didn't see either of them! On Picard, was it n Freecloud?

Here

Every time I see someone complaining about Burnham being emotional (and there’s a good amount of it), I can’t help but wonder if there is some kind of sexism at play. How dare human characters show emotion. Sisko cried a good amount, where’s the criticism for him? But I bet if Janeway showed emotion she would have gotten the same criticism that Burnham is receiving from certain people.

Sisko didn't just cry he got violently angry on a number of occasions. And Janeway definitely copped a lot of horrible criticism about her decision making being caused by some sort of mental disorder at certain points

I'm still trying to figure out what arbitrary reason the writers decided to throw Orions and Andorians together. All I can come up with is they have similar skin colors. Like, hey, Twi'leks are green and blue.
An nod to Journey To Babel is my guess.

SELF-SEALING STEM-BOLTS! Anyone else notice that there seems to be a DS9 reference in every ep so far this year? I keep wondering if there's a hint in that.
The poor guy that got "fenced" was a Bajoran,

My guess it would likely be either Culber or Stamets.
Why? Culber is a doctor and Stamets a scientist. Neither have command experience.
why does it have to be Michael?
Are you really asking this question?

Yeah, I think it will be Tilly.
What is this the Kelvin Universe?

Didn’t the con default to Rhys recently? Seems like the barely there bridge characters would be in line before Tilly. Aside from the fact she’s an ensign, she really seems to be struggling with her new life in the future. Don’t think she needs the stress of command on top of that.
Con was given to him, but the Captain can give it to any officer.

Shouldn't she have a speaking role first? She's barely said two lines since the beginning of the show
Yeah, that's not how it works. If it did, all the guys Kirk put in the chair when taking his senior staff on landing party would never have gotten the job.

But why even go through the trouble of makeup and prosthetics if all they're gonna show is 10 ms of low-res stuff?
Adds texture to the back ground. Like all those oneshot wonders in TMP.

Yes, they have. But in real life we call persons like her boring.
People like what exactly? People with emotions? People who break the rules?

When Georgiou had her funny turn and flashback, I had the impression for one crazy second that she was reliving Captain Georgiou's death. Now that would have been metaphasic.
That was my impression too. I'm thinking that the fact the universes are getting further apart is causing Georgiou to disconnect from her universe and connect to the Prime. The end result might be a blend of Captain Georgiou and the Emperor in Exile.
Game of Thrones did it about every episode. :)
You were meant to think they were lead characters. They weren't

Because Discovery can travel in time, and go back to cause it. Find some imagination!
It can? I thought it got to the future riding the Red Angel's coat tails.?

Lower Decks. One of the main characters (Shaxs) was a Bajoran. Our first good look at a Bajoran in six weeks!
Oh wow. How the heck did I forget my favourite character?!

I didn't see either of them!
The Bajoran in this episode is the guy who gets his head blown up by the security fence, and Tim already linked the Picard one.

A solid 9. I really, really liked this one.

A TNG Era or NEM phaser in a scrap heap. Self-sealing stem bolts referenced. Discovery being upgraded to NCC-1031-A with detached warp nacelles. It was a pretty good story on top of all the fanwank and visual goodies.

It can? I thought it got to the future riding the Red Angel's coat tails.?

That's how they got to the future, yes, but Season 1 revealed that they can travel through time as well as space along the mycelial highway. They only did it once (to travel nine months into the future) when shifting universes, but this capability is a big Chekov's Gun that has not been acted on since.

I don't think they're going to use it to leave the 32nd century or prevent the Burn, but I'm sure it will come up at some point (perhaps with a moral dilemma involved), especially as they are quickly making strides to make the spore driving easier and Tilly is working on a Dark Energy project that will remove Stamets from the equation entirely.

But this show, EVery time you turn around she's tearing up. Johnny one-note. That sincere/doe look. Gets. So. Old. Writers, I get it: This is IMPORTANT and SAD. Oh, wait, now THIS IS. And . . . now THIS IS. BE MOVED NOW.
I guess I don't read it as what the writers are trying to say. I guess I am just along for the ride for what Burnham is feeling. I don't feel like "this is IMPORTANT and SAD" but that she feels that way. I don't see the harm or how it gets old.

It just feels so strange to lament the experiencing of emotions. I'm not saying everyone will be moved by Burnham, anymore than I am moved by Picard. But, wow, it feels like this character cannot catch a break from the audience to the point of wanting her off the show. To me, that feels extreme.

A solid 7.

I didn't like it as much as previous episodes but it moved the story along, and the tension between Saru/Burnham/Tilly is being handled maturely.

I especially liked how the episode showed Saru's relative inexperience as captain, leading him to make some questionable decisions.

And Tilly caught in between her friendship with Burnham and her sense of duty, on multiple levels. Not only is she unsure of what to do, she's unsure how she wants to be perceived. When Saru tells her that he doesn't think she would undertake a rogue personal mission, she isn't sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing, because on one hand it shows her dedication to duty, but on the other hand, it shows that other people think of her as a quirky officer with limited ability to stand up for what she believes in.

On a fun note, other people may not have liked it, but I loved the Star Wars-type visuals and sound effects when Book's ship was shooting the planet up and going to hyperspace...err, warp...with the transport vessel.

That's classic Trek. Go on a rogue mission against orders but only get minor discipline because you were successful and saved everyone's lives.

I really hope they don't go the route of having Burnham go on her own as a mercenary to solve the Burn and save the day. That's too similar to how Picard (the series) works. At that point they might as well just retitle the series Burnhan and straight out tell the fans they are lazy writers and will rip off their own properties because they are creatively bankrupt.

Dont Andorian antennae grow back?

Where have I seen the head popping perimeter before? Was that in The Running Man?

First, I am giving this episode a solid B. I was overall entertained, but I felt that the negatives brought its score down, for the following reasons:

1) Too much ham from the Mirror Georgiou.
2) Tilly's betrayal (though understandable).
3) Saru's naivety (did he NOT expect Burnham to go rogue?).
4) Predictable bad guy torture (seen it in the movie adaptation of THE RUNNING MAN).
5) Flat comedy moment (ugh, we get it...personal transporters SUCK).

Okay, I would change a few things, in order to make the episode better for ME:

a) Less ham for Mirror Georgiou. Clearly, she likes screwing around with the bad guys, but just because she is eeevil, that doesn't mean she's omnipotent. I do like the hints at character growth, as she struggles with something yet to be revealed.
b) If Burnham is not good at being #1, and likes going rogue for a greater cause, just give her a new job, either as an operative for Section 31 or Starfleet Intelligence or something. Or "Fact Finder". Make it so that Burnham can still solve the mystery of "The Burn" (*Mission:Impossible" style). If Burnham solves the mystery, fine. If caught or killed, plausible deniability.
c) Saru needs to get some gravitas or something. Or just be pragmatic. I expected earlier on for him to give Burnham a "wink and a nod" as to what Burnham wanted to do. "We have twelve hours before our next assignment, Commander." "Twelve hours?" "Yes, TWELVE hours. After that, well, you know." "Understood, sir." He knows about Burnham's tendencies, so why not take advantage of them?
d) do something original. Don't just glean classic scenes from other sources.
e) Have genuine comedic moments. Ad-lib if you have to.

Looking forward to "Unification, Part 3"...

It looks like Georgiou has PTSD now too. I think Cronenberg took away Georgiou's "evil" Mirror gene (or whatever it is) and now suddenly she's beginning to feel overwhelmed over everything she did in the Mirror Universe all at once now.

I like the new comm-badges.
Thank you, I think he did that as well and she feels bad about all the hideous stuff she has done in the past. And that character change is what sets us up to be OK with her having her own show...

I want one of those new badges. The only thing is, I wish they were biologically embedded, not worn technology.

On a fun note, other people may not have liked it, but I loved the Star Wars-type visuals and sound effects when Book's ship was shooting the planet up and going to hyperspace...err, warp...with the transport vessel.
The visuals are always great, it's just that they're hiding nice things too much. But what really stood out as incredibly bad to me was the ultra-lame robotic "dow dow dow" weapons sound :brickwall:

That was my impression too. I'm thinking that the fact the universes are getting further apart is causing Georgiou to disconnect from her universe and connect to the Prime. The end result might be a blend of Captain Georgiou and the Emperor in Exile.
There was a Terran dagger involved, what we saw of the body looked male, and she yelled "San!", so I guess it was some male family member she killed and now she remembers how much she regrets it.

She wants to find out what caused The Burn. Book, who she loves, has something that can give her a lead. So now someone she loves has info that she's obsessed with. She's determined. And if she can figure out what caused The Burn, she can stop it from happening again. She can even possibly bring to justice whoever caused it if it's a person who's still alive.
A nice parallel to Raffi in PIC.

Previous Trek characters cried in way less than half the episodes, and that made it more powerful. Burnham cries in way more than half the episodes, so it loses the impact it would otherwise have.

I bawl at 'Family' for example. I bawled when the Discovery crew were reunited with Burnham.
For me, it's all about dynamics in the drama.
I'm a man, I cry, often at how nice things are when you look at them that way. I cry at music. I cried just last night sitting the living room with my wife thinking about not being able to play Christmas carols for the extended family at the 110-year-old homestead on Christmas Eve. .I've quoted emotional trek scenes I like in this series and in other Treks. JUST mentioned Picard totally losing it, and how that worked for me, upthread.
Many Trek episodes deeply move me, and I know people who really cry all the time and don't even know themselves why they're "built so close to water". So it's not unrealistic or implausible, but the effect on the viewer wears off quickly (except those who will respond with "not me").

And I love the new upgrades to Discovery! I think changing the registry is to hide the fact that the ship is from the past.
Then they would change the uniforms as well

Unless you can explain to us how Burnham can cause something when she wasn't even around, you're just using her as a scapegoat because you don't like her. The Burn happened 810 years after she left the 23rd Century and 120 years before she arrived in the 32nd. She was nowhere.
She sneezed in transit and that caused a temporal anomaly that the Disco then bumped into. Interaction between the sneeze sound, the anomaly, the warp engines, and the spore drive caused a fatal and unexpected reaction that destroyed dilithium, with the side effect of seeding a melody in the subconscious of several cultures. Reversing the polarity of the fourier-transformed melody and colliding it with a graviton beam using the main deflector will dissolve the anomaly, and ...Admiral!!! There be ships here!!

Then they would change the uniforms as well
Call me biased, but the 32nd Century uniforms are not exactly a favorite of mine. Any excuse to stick with the old uniforms is a good one. I might as well just come right out and say it: I don't like the new uniforms. And I think they'd look garish on the Discovery sets if the entire crew wore them. No thanks.

EDIT: And I don't think most people in-universe remember the Discovery uniforms. When they think of 23rd Century uniforms, they probably think of the TOS Uniforms or the Monster Maroons. The Disco Uniforms, in-universe, are a deep cut that virtually no one would be familiar with. "What's old is new again."
