First, I am giving this episode a solid B. I was overall entertained, but I felt that the negatives brought its score down, for the following reasons:
1) Too much ham from the Mirror Georgiou.
2) Tilly's betrayal (though understandable).
3) Saru's naivety (did he NOT expect Burnham to go rogue?).
4) Predictable bad guy torture (seen it in the movie adaptation of THE RUNNING MAN).
5) Flat comedy moment (ugh, we get it...personal transporters SUCK).
Okay, I would change a few things, in order to make the episode better for ME:
a) Less ham for Mirror Georgiou. Clearly, she likes screwing around with the bad guys, but just because she is eeevil, that doesn't mean she's omnipotent. I do like the hints at character growth, as she struggles with something yet to be revealed.
b) If Burnham is not good at being #1, and likes going rogue for a greater cause, just give her a new job, either as an operative for Section 31 or Starfleet Intelligence or something. Or "Fact Finder". Make it so that Burnham can still solve the mystery of "The Burn" (*Mission:Impossible" style). If Burnham solves the mystery, fine. If caught or killed, plausible deniability.
c) Saru needs to get some gravitas or something. Or just be pragmatic. I expected earlier on for him to give Burnham a "wink and a nod" as to what Burnham wanted to do. "We have twelve hours before our next assignment, Commander." "Twelve hours?" "Yes, TWELVE hours. After that, well, you know." "Understood, sir." He knows about Burnham's tendencies, so why not take advantage of them?
d) do something original. Don't just glean classic scenes from other sources.
e) Have genuine comedic moments. Ad-lib if you have to.
Looking forward to "Unification, Part 3"...
