I might be mistaken but I thought that Book's ship was travelling FTL in the first episode of the season.

I mean, we know dilithium still exists, it's just way more rare. Presumably there are less interstellar ships, and those which do exist arguably have to travel at lower warp speeds so as not to put strain on the supply. But that's about it.

No FTL at all would make both the courier system and uptime Starfleet completely unworkable. Even presuming full impulse worked, it would take ships years - in some cases decades or centuries - to travel anywhere. Due to time dilation that wouldn't be all that bad for the crews, but it would mean the idea of building meaningful trade relationships - or doing any sort of rapid response - would be pretty much impossible.

So far, everything just seems smaller and scrappier though.

SMG has made some comments offscreen about how Michael is not entirely sure that Starfleet is right for her any longer. I wonder if we're working towards her exiting the main character by the end of the season?
I'm pretty sure she'll leave. Maybe she'll join the emperor and move over to the 31 show!

This also reinforces the idea that the Enterprise-A wasn't a brand-new ship in the TOS Movies. Which is most likely why it was really decommissioned after only seven years. And why it was "ready" so soon after the original was destroyed.
That was the Yorktown (which was also the original name of the TOS ship)

A total aside, but I wonder if anyone has asked Starfleet to contact that lonely dude on the broken station waiting for his entire life for a signal.
I really hope he appears again, maybe at the end

Didn’t the con default to Rhys recently? Seems like the barely there bridge characters would be in line before Tilly. Aside from the fact she’s an ensign, she really seems to be struggling with her new life in the future. Don’t think she needs the stress of command on top of that.

Nilsson, Rhys, Owo--any of these would make fine first officers. It's the show's fault for not focusing on them, not the characters' fault.

I'm sort of surprised the normally sharp Vance seemed to assume that Burnham's fixation with the Burn caused her to run off and not her relationship with Book. And it's clear if Book weren't in danger, Burnham would have waited on the whole black box thing.

Vance must have learned the whole story of her year alone with Book by now. Yet Book is not even mentioned during her demotion scene by Vance or Saru.

Yeah but Saru or Vance could give her a promotion. Why not?
I mean, we are debating the merits of fictional people.... But from what the show has given us, she has next to zero command experience whatsoever (that I can recall, anyhow). I've never seen her issue an order to anyone, ever. She appears to mostly be Stamet's assistant that shows up on the bridge often for some reason. She's just the engineering officer that serves on the Bridge?

I like what they are trying to do to Tilly this season, but I think giving her the XO position on a starship at this point would not ring true.

I am thinking it will be Detmer, the otherwise most developed of the bridge crew. It would also give a chance to make some interesting and relevant, meaningful stories with her apparent PTSD and a stressful promotion.

Or possibly they will use one of the other bridge crew and use this as an opportunity to develop a character we've seen little of. And, dark horse: Someone from the 32nd century. Basically, I have no idea. :) But I'd be willing to be it's not Tilly.

I am thinking of lines. If they promote someone to that position it will give their character more importance than before which could lead to a new contract and their names in the opening credits... So whoever will be chosen will be so because of their acting abilities more so than because of something else.
