There was a Jonathon Archer reference a few episodes later, and I am not mistaken one of the first two episodes had a very vague reference to the the original Earth/Klingon contact.
fair enough. Sarek was a torch passing from TOS though, which this show is more closely tied to.
I have felt for awhile that Context is for Kings is the real opening episode in many ways, and that episode is full of Easter eggs connecting Discovery to everywhere else (Lorca's mushroom slideshow.. (sidethought.. why don't they use that remote viewing function ever again? it seemed useful), Cadet Decker's callout as well.

The all blue uniforms to me also seemed a bit like a throwback to both the ENT uniforms and the Kelvin uniforms. Even the Gorn skeleton could be a throwback to ENT, since the first knowledge starfleet had of them was through an Orion speaking to Archer.

That's a good point. I thought that the all blue was reflective of both the ENT uniforms, which would make sense thematically as well, with the Klingons attempting unity, and the Federation struggling its ideals in the face of war.

Yes, I can see a pretty good through line from ENT to Kelvin to DSC.

Definitely SNW is more tied to TOS, with Spock being one of the main characters, and it set right before TOS. Decker would also be another tie to TOS. I do think the blue DISCO uniforms being a nod to ENT is nice speculation. I can't remember if I saw it on TrekBBS or read it in Star Trek magazine, but someone speculated that DISCO works better as a sequel to ENT than a prequel to TOS and ever since I've found it more acceptable to see it as such. The explanation of the Gorn is another nice way to find that connection. If SNW uses the Tholians that could also be another tie, and could also be a nod to the Marvel Comics Early Voyages series, which I do hope gets quite a few shout outs on SNW.

Yeah, I think Disco works very well as - not following up on stories/a continuation - but as a progression of the Trek universe from the end of Enterprise. Terra Prime ends with four Alpha Q peoples cementing an alliance that season 4 had been building - first ep of Disco shows reactionary Klingons worried about that very alliance, which evolved into the Federation, even name dropping those four species specifically. Goes along with "Klingon purity" vs Fed multiculturalism that Enterprise embraces. Which is the arc of the Enterprise show - Archer shifting from a human centric view with something to prove to embracing the idea of a unifying with other to make something more special - Trek going through the 9/11 era only to reaffirm Trek values in the end.

Other Disco connections being S31 at the end of ENT, the uniforms, the Vulcan extremism/isolationism/bigotry we see in both series, Archer/Ent (even Shran) name drops, the Defiant in the Mirror U, having season long arc storytelling, Temporal War connection, showing more *sexy* scenes (for lack of a better word - Disco does this better than Ent)...I'm sure I'm missing some.

btw I voted maybe - it just depends on how it's done! Less interested in a revival (though the show definitely deserved one more season!) than I am in seeing some elements followed up in the period b/w ENT and Disco, and it would be great to see a show make new (fresh!) canon set in this period of Trek's early days, rather than rehash what's been seen before.

There are several topics that could be followed up upon from ENT in a series of sorts set between ENT and Disco...

    - Vissians & Cogenitors
    - Early days of the Romulan Cold War
    - Suliban-Tandaran relations
    - The Xindi
    - penal colony Canamar
    - corruption plagued planet Agaron as mentioned in "The Seventh"
    - Automated repair station from "Dead Stop"
    - The Malurians prior to being wiped out by Nomad in TOS
    - Valakians and the Menk
    - Kreetassans and the symbiotic lifeform seen in "Vox Sola"
    - cultural expansion of the Orions and Tholians
    - the early days of an established Prime Directive
    - status of the first Earth colonies
    - an expanding Starfleet/Federation

There’s also the integration of the MACOs into Starfleet, as brought up in Star Trek: Beyond.

I don't think there would be a shortage of new stories with a new crew. :)

A new ENT series will have about as much in common with ENT as DSC has with TOS.

Let’s wait and see with SNW before passing judgment on Kurtzman-era show being comparable to TOS and using that as a metric to say that a Kurtzman-era produce ENT would be the same as Berman-era ENT.

DSC has more in common with Kelvinverse Trek, if that show is going to be compared to anything.

None of those are stories, just premises based on trivia that non-trekkies would be indifferent to.

Or maybe non-Trekkies would have an interest in those premises if they are given a reason to care about them.

What's the reason? Why these plot lines to follow up on? Because, otherwise, it does sound like a trivia based exercise.

Some past story ideas can be used to fuel new series. For example, aspects of In a Mirror, Darkly and
    the Temporal War arc
were utilized by Discovery quite well.

It just depends how it's done.

Not saying it can't be done or done well. But, that's a long list of follow up because...?

I mean, it's not my list, so I'm not here to argue that point. I'd simply say that continuity should never be a straight jacket, but it can be a great springboard for developing new ideas. DS9 made an entire series that spun out of an idea introduced in TNG - the occupation of Bajor. The very possibility of a Section 31 show comes from a DS9 episode. Enterprise gave Star Trek Beyond - which I find underrated - a solid villain. Continuity doesn't have to be the enemy.

I am not treating continuity as an enemy. I might be coming across as more abrasive than I mean but that's because I don't buy in to just doing an episode because an event happened in continuity. For instance, I would not want TNG Season 1 to be all episodes like "The Naked Now" with follow ups to past TOS Enterprise missions. We could see another Salt Vampire, or follow up at the Shore Leave Planet.

My question will always be "Why?" and "How does this impact the characters?" If there is a compelling reason to take these characters to these planets and what will we learn about them?

Well, I’ll try and expand on some of my list, to show how revisiting some of these premises might affect the NX-01 crew.

    - Vissians & Cogenitors

Maybe a second encounter with the Vissians alleviates Trip’s guilt and Archer’s failure if its revealed that Charles actually did not end her life and was instead either killed by the Vissian engineer and his wife, or another member of the Vissian crew. Which then opens up a number of possibilities as to how Starfleet develops their relations with the Vissians going forwards, once they learn how Vissian actually treat Cogenitors on their homeworld and why they are treated the way they are. There’s also a Mayweather story here if the ECS Horizon, ECS Fortunate, or another cargo ship runs into problems with the Vissians in an attempt to open trade routes to Vissia.

    - Suliban-Tandaran relations

If the Tandarans were willing to send an agent to inquire as to what Archer knew about the Suliban, what if they sent more agents, this time for Hoshi, Trip, & Reed? Since those three were also on Risa with Archer (Mayweather returned to the ship after suffering an injury), and its reasonable to consider that the Tandarans would want to learn more about what they know about the Suliban. if they are fearful of genetic engineering in general after the Augments crisis and the attempt to make Klingon Augments, then they have reason to go after Phlox too or cause a disturbance on Denobula, who are comfortable with genetic engineering. Considering Reed’s past with Section 31 in particular, which wasn’t known prior to S4, how does he deal with rival Tandaran spies that are pursuing him and his friends?

    - The Xindi

Did the Reptilians rejoin the Xindi Council? Or was there another upheaval on the Xindi Council and the new leaders targeted Earth colonies on their own accord this time i.e. occupation of Alpha Centauri and Vega colony and the new Deneva colony. I’d also imagine that Archer would at least try to get the Xindi onboard to help him with the Romulans at the time war breaks out between Earth and Romulus. He’s supposed to be a peacemaker and alliance builder. Doesn’t this matter?

    - penal colony Canamar & corruption plagued planet Agaron as mentioned in "The Seventh"

Maybe there is a connection between the existence of Enolian penal colony Canamar, their habits of engaging in false arrests (as faced by Archer & Trip) and the historical corruption on Agaron. Agaron is also one of those planets that had relations with Vulcan along with Coridan, Earth & Qonos. Maybe relations between the two governments changed again after the Vulcan reformation due to the new Vulcan government not being happy with the level of corruption on Agaron compared with the previous Vulcan leadership under V’Las.

    - Automated repair station from "Dead Stop"

This repair seems like it plays a role in the origin story of the Borg, and we aren’t going to ask what happened to it, considering that Archer actually ran into some Borg?

    - The Malurians prior to being wiped out by Nomad in TOS

What are the Malurians doing during this time period? What were they like, beyond secretly living among prewarp civilizations and running secret mining operations? Was that just their general M.O. at the time? .Or were there a few good Malurians genuinely concerned about their planet i.e. climate change, for example

    - Valakians and the Menk

This admittedly might be better suited for SNW or a series set between TOS & TNG, or even after VOY/LD/PIC, since the Valakians are supposed to extinct by this point. But is still worth asking about, due to the ethical implications made by Archer & Phlox in the absence of a Prime Directive.

    - Kreetassans and the symbiotic lifeform seen in "Vox Sola"

How did the Kreetassans come into contact with this lifeform? Do they bring them onboard by accident or did they take a number of symbiotic lifeforms off the planet against their will?

    - cultural expansion of the Orions and Tholians

Was it just policy for Starfleet to send crews comprised mostly of females to deal with Orions after the events in “Bound”? Or were mostly male crews (like Archer’s) still allowed to explore Orion space and homeworld, but just were restricted with limited contact with Orion slave girls from that point forwards?

The Tholians had an interest in the TCW and actually fought the Suliban over a ship from the future. With the TCW over, did the Tholian Assembly have anymore encounters with the Suliban Cabal? The Suliban seemed to have a lot of enemies (Tandarans, Tholians, Klingons). Wonder what happened to them?

Even between the Denobulans and Antarans, how successful were efforts to normalize relations? Or was there pushback/resistance by hardliners on both sides? Since Phlox initiated the change, did he or any member of his extended family get caught up in this?

There are positive things about both B&B and Coto, but IMO, neither were perfect.

B&B were building a universe that existed before TOS. And aspects of the universe they were building did make sense and did fit within Trek continuity; they just didn’t flesh some of them out as well as they could have. They did have some idea as to what they were doing though, since they managed to get the show to S4. And it wasn’t like they ignored TOS, since they did bring in the Tholians, and gave a bit of insight as to who the Malurians were before they met their fate a century later. And followed continuity when dealing with first contact with the Romulans. B&B just had a bad habit of going back to the time travel well way too much for this particular series (and that might have been intentional due to having Bakula as the lead). And as they had carried the franchise for a very long time, it had to be difficult to come up with new ideas on the fly while being constrained by continuity when developing weekly tv for a prequel series. Especially with the higher ups interfering a lot.

Coto did a good thing by trying to strongly link the show to the TOS era, and presenting a new format through miniarcs. Although he ignored a lot about the ENT universe that B&B developed before the Xindi storyline in the process, in terms of new species like the Vissians and the Suliban, and tensions between freighters and Starfleet. But he was considering opening the door to fan scripts, and did seem to understand that there was a possibility that the ratings of the show was underrepresented since fans may have decided to Tivo or download the episodes instead. And did contribute to the show being seen more positively.

Looking at where they both wanted to go for S5, Coto wanted to do more TOS related fan service, plus spend a good chunk of the season building to the Romulan War with the Romulans as the main antagonists of the season. Whereas B&B wanted a call back to the first couple of seasons and deal with Future Guy and space boomers more, and Braga considered setting all of S5 entirely in the mirror universe.

There was room for middle ground, or even a blend of the two directions. But if ENT were to resume production today – and I am not saying that it ever will – it would be produced in the mold of DSC or PIC; season long arcs focusing on a few of the main characters at most, and a guest character. It could still end up being great tv, but we already kind of had that direction with ENT S3-4, with Archer, Trip & T’Pol, plus the occasional Shran appearance. ENT really needed to go in the direction of TNG and DS9 with its characters and feature all of the main cast.
