Spoilers New season 3 badges

How many non-human Captains have we ever seen? There was Captain Rixx from TNG S1 Conspiracy. There was Captain Solok from DS9.

^ And the Vulcan captain of the Saratoga from DS9's pilot. (played by J.G. Hertzler)
That's 3x that we've seen.

We've seen more Non-Human Flag Officers than Captains for some reason.

That's gotta change IMO.

If the UFP is as vast as it is, we should be seeing ALOT more non-Human BiPaB's

+ BiPaB's = Generic term for Humanoid without being Human-centric
- BiPedaloid = Walking using only 2 rear limbs
- Most Sentient & Sapient UFP member races are BiPedaloids
- Most are BiBrachialoids (Having 2 Arms)
- There are a few exceptions to that rule with certain species having 4 limbs or 2 arms and a prehensile tail that has similar functions to a arm
- Most have one Head, but that is implied
- Bi(Pedal & Brachial)loids
- Colloquially: BiPaB's

Unseen, but assuming the Intrepid had a Vulcan captain. There were multiple alien Federation members with Captain and Admiral rank devices in the Fed Council scene of Star Trek IV.

Plus, most recently, the Tellarite Captain Durango from Lower Decks and all the various captains of their own factions in ENT.

The Starfleet we see on TV is disproportionately HumanoTerran-centric compared to what it should be, given the size and diversity of the Federation. But then assorted alien crew members can’t just be found via central casting...

It’s a lot cheaper and easier to do alien characters (and non-BiPaB one’s at that...!) in animated series rather than live action with prosthetics +/- CGI.

On that basis, we should see a lot more of them in Lower Decks!

But for Live Action, Non-Human BiPaB's should be more common within StarFleet.

I agree — but even that costs quite a bit more than just putting an extra in a costume. So, for example, there were indeed several different BiPaB aliens in the Starfleet HQ scenes of Picard but nothing like as many as there probably should be.

I haven’t seen much of Lower Decks yet but even the bits that I have seen include a fair number of non-humans (although arguably they could still have more!).

Meanwhile, back at the new oval badges...
:alienblush: :rommie: :bolian:

Main problem seems to be that they are not easily recognisable as Starfleet badges unless viewed really close up.
Maybe they should have went silver and gold or only raised the arrowhead

When I saw previews and the first few episodes of DS9, I thought the Bajoran badge was a thinner delta with a vertical ellipse, as a contrast to the SF one with a horizontal ellipse, and wondered if there's a connection between them

Those were my thoughts too. They could have made the delta silver and the background gold (or vice-versa) to make it look less like the generic brooch little old church ladies wear on Sundays. I understand that it's been nearly a thousand years and things definitely should have evolved over time, but to me, this just seem so...meh.

Maybe Bajor really is the new capital of the Federation in the 32nd-Century, I dunno...

It’s interesting, isn’t it — nearly a millennium is quite a timescale to consider in terms of potential political, cultural, technological and scientific developments and changes (good or bad...!).

Arguably, the changes to the general experience of day-to-day life for most of the people on Earth between 1000 BCE and 0 CE, or 0 CE and 1000 CE, were actually not all that huge. Various centers of political power and control came and went around the world, with varying rates of growth from rapid burst to slow and steady, and longevity that ranged from decades or less to many centuries. Various cities grew and declined but the basic technology and agrarian way of life was not dissimilar for the large majority of the population.

The changes between 1000 CE and 2000 CE, however, were huge! There was significant acceleration from the second half of that millennium and even more so from fourth quarter of that period. The final century saw previously unimaginable changes which are still ongoing.

What happened between the time of Picard, c. 2400, and the time period that Discovery is now entering? Was there a cultural and technological plateau? We know there was some form of cataclysmic event but that’s not even half the story compared to the events that obviously followed and how societies and systems coped (or didn’t!).

Everyone else has finally come to realize that the wormhole aliens are prophets

Take three...

I'm sure we'll get better images some time soon but this feels closer to the details I can pick up from the pics we have so far. I suspect the overall basic badge is a domed ellipse with a polished finish; the delta may well be almost flush with the surface of the background (or even etched onto the surface rather than raised above it) but, for now, I've gone with slightly raised. It's hard to get an exact feel for the dimensions and proportions of the ellipse from the pics we have so far but it seems smaller and narrower than I originally thought.
