It's a franchise that really needs to be kept away from Ridley Scott.

I disagree. I find that Scott's work on Alien, Prometheus and Covenant very entertaining and intriguing to my personal tastes.

Ridley Scott only ever makes good movies by accident.

But then, if we thought this franchise was in trouble before, I'm sure it's in even worse shape now that Disney's got their hands on it.

I'm still waiting for Neil Blomkamp's movie. :(

I agree that Prometheus was entertaining: when I was not completely bored I was laughing a lot.

I read the original screenplay for Prometheus .. Lots better. Covenant was a train wreck.
Look forward to someone else taking over. Hopefully with space Marines.

I haven't seen Covenant, but I liked Prometheus and would be open to more Scott Alien movies.

I have read Jon Spaihts' original script for Covenant, and it's unredeemable in almost every respect. Basically Aliens 0.5 in every conceivable way, with a healthy dose of "Hey, remember when they did this in Aliens? This is why they did this in Aliens." And, sweet Jesus, the last 45 pages or so are just terrible. Thank God Scott overcame studio pressures and got approval to bring in Lindelof to fix that tire fire of a story.

I get why people want to see Blomkamp's alt-universe Aliens 2.5, because they refuse to put their toys back into their toybox and they want to be catered to, but that doesn't make Blomkamp's approach any more valid.

Ridley seemed to be heading for a conclusion that would have had the psycho android David:

    a) Find a way to splice his biomechanics into the Alien's DNA, thus perfecting his creation (and yes, the Xenomorph would be all his creation, not some remake of an old Engineer recipe)
    b) Mutate the last female survivor of the Covenant, Daniels, into a prototype Alien Queen
    c) Create the eggs that would be in the ship that crashed on LV-426, far closer to the time of the original movie than anyone imagined (say, months?)
    d) If not actually be the blown-out original 'Space Jockey' himself.

So no, I have no interest in seeing Ridley complete his prequel trilogy.

I thought it done well, Lindoff's crap is what ruined it for me, in the original script, read that instead of the "squid abortion" or whatever you want to call it, she gets implanted, and a chest burster.. well bursts.. while she is in the medical pod and it saves her.. that would have been killer in the movie. and the Neomorphs being white and the xenomorphs being the armored hunters.
I liked it, but I want more.. well.. xenomorphs and a study of them.. not androids.

Which means you're refusing to engage the movie for what it was, and are simply criticizing the movie because it didn't fit the fanfic you had built up in your head.

I don't and didn't have a problem with the material Scott wanted to cover. I have a problem with the execution.

Step #1: Don't let John Logan anywhere near the goddamn script.

Probably so. Can't blame Logan for Prometheus though.

If you haven't seen Alien Covenant, then you have no concept of how badly Scott has driven this franchise into a ditch.

It's hard to say which franchise is in worse shape at this point, Alien or Predator. At least Scott's Alien prequels have Michael Fassbender, who can make nearly any movie watchable. (Conveniently forgetting about Assassin's Creed and Dark Phoenix.)

Admittedly, I don't know enough about Blomkamp's approach to say it would be brilliant. But I think that bringing back Ripley should probably be the starting point of any further entries, so that puts him ahead of Scott so far.

I think that you're assuming that Scott's prequels would be far more coherent and logical than they actually are. I mean, nothing about the end of Prometheus fits with how things turned out in Alien Covenant. I certainly wasn't expecting Elizabeth Shaw to be killed-off off-screen. That was deeply unsatisfying. Also, I was expecting something really interesting when they got to the Engineer's homeworld. Instead, it just seemed like some generic village that we saw for 2 seconds, then David released a bio weapon & murdered everyone. What a waste of one of the few interesting elements left to explore in this franchise.

No, I generally enjoyed Promethius, and Was looking forward to what somebody else did with the alien concept. And was really looking forward to coveanant with the exploration of the engineers world, why they were going to attack us, all the questions raised in Promethius.. but what covenant was, was a train wreak The david releasing the bio weaopon on the engineers wasn't even in the movie! It was an extra!! And Shaw trusting David was a bad idea jeans moment.. Scott just went whereever he wanted to go with the story with his Android fixation.. Twas Crap.

Trusting David is always a bad idea. But then, did Shaw actually know just how nuts David is and how much he hates humans? The audience knew. But did anyone else ever figure out that it was David who killed Shaw's boyfriend by giving him that contaminated water?

Darren Mooney wrote an interesting essay earlier this year discussing how the plot of Covenant seems to mirror the behind-the-scenes and audience reaction to the prior film, with a by-the-numbers Alien movie devouring and overwhelming everything that was interesting and different about Prometheus.

    I hadn't read that. Thanks.

I like Covenant quite a bit. To me, it takes all the tropes of a Star Trek story and warps them into something incredibly bleak. I'd like a conclusion to David's story, but if Ridley wants to go in another direction I'm game.
