Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Probably not because money. Not money to use the original, money they'd get for having a new unique theme they can sell.

I hope it’s something big, bold and exciting, rather the style they’ve used for Discovery and Picard. I don’t mind those themes, but the TOS and TNG themes have a sweeping grandeur that everything since has lacked.

I guess I’m hoping this show will be a little more positive and a little less reliant on nostalgia than either Discovery and Picard.

Strange New Worlds is literally a return to old school TOS Star Trek except with 2020s production values. It doesn't get any more nostalgic than that. Short of making it like Star Trek Continues. Sorry.

I'm not saying "nostalgic" means bad. I'm a TOS Fan too. But I'm pretty sure this is the type of show that will try to get back to that type of Star Trek. Whether or not it has more characters we've seen before is beside the point.

I don't see any point in rehashing arguments about the first two seasons of DSC; we all know where we stand. But with the third season, and the crew in the 32nd Century, there's no link to previous Star Trek and the story structure sure isn't like TOS.

Ideally the theme tune will be more along the lines of TOS rather than Enterprise, it put me off the show slightly as soon as I heard it.

The Discovery and Picard theme's sound great and fit well.

Must admit I am curious to hear the theme for the S31 show if/when it happens.

I'm sure the music will be unique. But will they return to an opening narration? Will Anson Mount get to do the "Space, the final frontier" routine, with maybe some small tweaks and changes? Or something else entirely?

Has there been any mention of when the show is set? Is it after Disco S2 or is 1 day after 'The Cage' catching up to Disco S2 then moving past it? They were away from the war on a mission which could be a cool backdrop for a season.

Now I'm really interested to see with what opening credits they'll come up with. I liked both the Picard and Discovery openings, but I think I'd like to see something more space-y and planet-y for SNW.

I hadn't thought of this yet. I was kind of disappointed that the Disco intro didn't do the classic ship flyby. It made me revisit the vomit inducing pain from ENT. I think SNW needs some proper ship porn in the intro. Does it also need the narration? That's a weird one. I don't think so. I don't think it made sense in TNG and in SNW it will be cheesy. It was a Kirk thing.

They haven't said specifically as far as I know, but everything I've heard the actors say is that Pike will be dealing with knowing his ultimate fate and Spock finally embracing his human side thanks to Michael's influence. So assuming the actors weren't just going with talking about where the characters were last we saw them, it would be post-DISCO season two.

Post-Disco makes the most sense anyway. This show is already a prequel to TOS, why complicate the matter by making it a prequel to Disco as well? Besides, the actors will be aging since Disco season 2, why have it set in a period where they should in fact be younger?

Trek fans might be reasonably ok with this.
I think its part of the terrific idea of making the shows all very different, unlike the Berman era attempts. We have different creative teams and producers keeping things fresh, and I would not be surprised if at least one of the shows is partially episodic, with some secondary serialization.

RAMA

The best thing about going episodic is that DIS/PIC both have largely failed with the serialized arcs. They have many good individual episodes, but it's hard to enjoy good episodes on a rewatch when you know the "payoff" at the end is meh. But even if only half of the SNW episodes are great, there will be a ton of rewatchability.
