News Coronavirus Pandemic Information and Support Group

The Ontario government announced today that we are going to start Stage 1 of Phase 2 of our re-opening plan on Tuesday, after the holiday weekend. Stage 1 is anticipated to last for two to four weeks, assuming no spike in cases. A number of business will be able to reopen, if they can conduct business under the physical distancing guidelines. People who can work from home are still being encouraged to do so. An announcement about schools won't be made until next week.

Our official numbers for today were 258 new cases, and 33 more deaths, so still trending downward, but by no means is it contained or anything. Hopefully people behave reasonably, and don't act like there is no more danger out there.

Latest info about this pandemic

Over 1.7 m have recovered so far.

300 000 have died so far.

Over 2.5 million are still receiving treatment for covid-19.

Thank you, but I’m in Michigan. Our stay at home order is in place until the 28th. Our numbers up north are extremely low, but we’ve lost about 4K down in the Detroit area. The density of the cases increases the further South-East you go; it seems to be concentrated in the most densely populated areas.

That sounds a lot like our case where I am. Have to say, I do appreciate living in a less condensed area. I kind of wouldn't want to live in either NYC or Toronto at this point.

We’ve had approx 2 dozen reported cases in our county with two deaths, I’m worried that when people start coming north for the Summer we will see an explosion of cases and maybe even deaths :(

Every time I'm on the bus, tram, or in the supermarket, I see people wearing their face masks the wrong way. That inspired me to do this little, easy to follow guide:

I don't usually post our numbers; I only did in that case because of the Stage 1 reopening announcement that day. Well, it turns out the next day, the government announced there had been a "glitch" (their word), and a number of new cases didn't get reported. The actual new case number for Thursday was apparently 345. The original number was the lowest we had seen in weeks; apparently the new number is the highest we've seen over the past week. However, they said that this isn't going to affect the reopening schedule.

For reference, Friday's new cases were 341, with 27 more deaths reported. In total, as of yesterday, we have 21,922 active cases, with 1,825 deaths, and 16,641 recovered.

There is something to be said about small countries like New Zealand and Denmark where elected officials are treated like normal citizens. NZ prime minister, Jacinda Ardern was refused entry to a cafe because the cafe had already reached it's customer limit under social distancing rules.

I wonder if they chased her down not because a table opened up, but because someone realized who she was.

Still, it was handled well by both parties. Most people would throw a fit.

So it's been a fairly consistent story all over the world that more men have been dying from COVID-19 than women.

Meanwhile, in Canada...

More Canadian women have COVID-19 and are dying as a result. Here’s some possible reasons why

The more we hear about the different effects the new coronavirus can have on the human body, the more horrifying it becomes. This article looks at an inflammatory syndrome caused by the virus, which seems to affect children (whom the medical professionals had originally thought were largely unaffected when this pandemic started):

How are we feeling about those school reopenings now? :(

There's something that's been bugging me for awhile. Why do people keep calling it the "novel" coronavirus, like it's some kind of curiosity?

Standard naming convention before a permanent name is decided upon:
wikipedia said:
The word "novel" indicates a "new pathogen of a previously known type" (i.e. known family) of virus. Use of the word conforms to best practices for naming new infectious diseases published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2015."

Depends on the frequency, whether it can be preventable with other interventions earlier, and whether it's linked to any other existing conditions they can check for. All this article has is a link to an individual story, that while scary, is not conclusive. All the articles I can find suggest it's rare and only offer circumstantial evidence it's caused by COVID.
