News Coronavirus Pandemic Information and Support Group

I'm of the school of thought that the virus is much more underreported than we think and places like New York might be up to 1/5 antibodied by now, and that's playing a role (Not just distancing) in the lower amount of new infections.

Which is good news for my state of Massachusetts, and bad news for states with much lower infection rates.
 
There's something that's been bugging me for awhile. Why do people keep calling it the "novel" coronavirus, like it's some kind of curiosity? :confused:

Various definitions.

What I don't like about calling it novel is that you can't read it like a book. ... Or, can you ... since it has a genetic code?

Because it kinda IS. A novel coronavirus is a new coronavirus that has not been previously identified. It is unlike the other coronaviruses that are already circulating among the human population, such as the common cold, SARS or MERS. So it IS novel; it's new and we don't know that much about it.
 
I guess it's just my mind interpreting "novel" as "novelTY."

If it means new, why not just SAY new? One less syllable.

That's a good question and one that I had wondered myself. Thanks to auntiehill for the explanation. I guess it just never occurred to me it could be that simple.

The third day in a row, the new-infection rate in Germany was above 1 (it was 1.3 on Sunday). This looks like the loosening of the social distancing rules do have an effect. Further reopenings of the economy and social life, like the announced reopening of restaurants and cafés in most states, should really be reconsidered under these circumstances. But with some politicians, it seems like their thinking is "What, our social distancing was working? Well, we better stop that, then".

Meanwhile, over in the UK, Boris Johnson wants to reopen the economy, despite the numbers of new infections still way too high and the NSH still being taxed close to breaking point, and the governments of Scotland and Wales have already announced they will keep the lock-down.

And in further bad news, Seoul in South Korea had to close bars and restaurants again, after new infections went up considerably again.

That's where I'm at too. People can be so arrogant, ignorant and selfish (let alone narcissistic) and all of that can be a deadly combination.

It's one VERY nasty virus and what's even scarier are the amount of complete idiots who STILL aren't taking it seriously. :mad:
