The High Republic: A more civilized age...

One should assume there will not be an overarching war that threatens the Republic. Both the Jedi and government officials state there hasn't been a full scale war in a thousand years.

So this era should be more about what a more prosperous ers is like. What the Jedi were like when they were not being clouded by the Dark Side. Even the chance for exploration and a real frontier feeling from time to time.

When rumors about this project first leaked I really liked the idea that it would be set ~400 years prior to the films. I feel like that would have been a perfect time for which to explore the ideas Lucasfilm are expressing: the golden age of the Republic and the Jedi, the Republic expanding and exploring the outer reaches of the galaxy, etc. As much as I love the KotOR/TOR era, one of my pet peeves with it had always been how similar it was to the movie era in terms of style and technology despite being ~4000 years in the past. (The TotJ comics had a much more primitive aesthetic that I think made more sense for the gap in time.)

But setting the High Republic ~200 years prior feels a little too close to the movies. To me, that feels more like it should be the transitional period between the High Republic and the era I've started referring to as the Late Republic, when the Republic had grown too large and began to collapse under its own weight.

Then again, maybe that's the ultimate goal of this publishing initiative. We know that it's going to kick off with some kind of Great Disaster that involves something major happening to a number of hyperspace lanes. Maybe this will instead start off with the Republic at its zenith, but eventually end with planting the seeds that will lead to its downfall.

Either way, I'm certainly curious to see how it turns out. Even if I still think lightsabers with crossguards look silly even for Star Wars.

Probably because they should bring in more than white guys to write and direct these films.
or maybe you haven't figured out that sprinkling in diversity in this franchise, even getting a woman director or whatever race and color you like, is only playing lip service to diversity, as they all will simply express the same view of the executive producer in the end. you all want kindergarten level diversity

As well as politics that I and I alone agree with. Can't forget that either.

Never mind Star Wars' origin as a Vietnam allegory, with the Americans as the bad guys.
it was not a "viet nam allegory" if anything it was amalgam of a few different aspects of human history, they had to draw from something) but it never was about drawing attention to the historical events the way a Trek allegory might. Let's not be disingenuous Unless you really want to compare the Viet-cong to ewoks and be the one who is racist

Lucas said the surface battle of Endor was a Vietnam allegory. So...

It's in Lucas notes.

I didn't deny that it was. But it's not like people were taking that from the film.. they were thinking "this battle is a great moment in the Empire/Rebellion conflict" NOT "this is a total allegory the Viet Nam war."
Even though Lucas said that, it the barest connection.

Well that's totally wrong. When I first saw ROTJ, I was thinking Vietnam allegory: jungle planet, asymmetrical warfare, the side with superior tech is encircled and defending their base. It could hardly have been more obvious.

Um, guys? I just watched the announcement video. Not seeing the problem here. We're getting more Star Wars. More, new Star Wars in a setting we've not really seen much of before. What the fuck is the problem? It's not going to be compulsory or anything. If it turns out badly you won't be forced to read any of it, I'm pretty sure. Take a deep breath and just calm down already.

This seems to just be a personal issue for you and a subset of various fandom, it's not representative of the entire fandom. Most fans are either supportive of this because they want increased diversity due to there being a lot of women and people of color in fandom or they just don't care either way. You're trying to project your beliefs onto everyone else and reality doesn't reflect that. It's like you have a mental block and can't see that no one really agrees with you, you seem to assume that everyone is lying. Most fans want more Star Wars as long as it's a new idea and aren't upset that there's a female character or that they use diversity on a whiteboard as something to consider when writing. Either your problem is that not every single character is a white man which is due to some bias or alien or you just hate marketing and should blame capitalism instead of diversity.

Wrong on ever single point. My point is that SW is not a movie ABOUT diversity . That theya re trying to make it about diversity is like making a mobster film and then people claiming its about flowers because there is a vase a flowers in a scene
