Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

can we all agree that the constant misspelling of Kurtzman's name is both annoyingly unfunny and also feels borderline antisemitic?
He's obviously just a (edit: poster who only wants to provoke). People should feed them less ;)
Can someone who likes this series just explain why? I there something i just understand? Im nit trying to be a contrarian i just dont get it
It is a dream come true that several characters, events, designs that I grew up loving appear again and we finally get to see what happened after Nemesis, after Voyager got home, how Hugh kept trying to lead his rogue group after Descent, how the Romulans have had different forehead types all along, how LCARS still exists, how sounds fit and make sense, especially after Disco... I mean, TNG and VOY are my favorite shows of all time. Here we have a new show that begins with the D flying in, and it wasn't changed for change's sake! And Data's inside with an unaltered look and uniform! Picard has unaltered ships and props in his archive (the bat'leth is at least mostly accurate, compared to the Disco version of it)! One of the best episodes from early TNG is picked up again and we learn what happened following Measure of a Man! The main theme is Batai's melody from Inner Light! The Borg cube is revealed with TOS Balance of Terror music! Seven discusses reclaiming humanity post-liberation with Picard, and leaves with the VOY theme! Later on, Riker and Troi are gonna appear! All that, and maybe more, is why.

Public accusation of trolling is an actionable offense. Please don't do this again.
Oh ok, didn't know that. Dix fulfills all the requirements for that IMO, since he's just provoking and not contributing, and if people would ignore him more instead of keeping things going, it would stop sooner.
That's all I meant by that. I'll take it out of my original post, then. Sorry!

I like Picard because it is the polar opposite of most of what has come before. With the exception of DS9 (which made me really question the roddenberry vision and is in my top 3 tv series) I find most of 90's trek pretty bland, homogenised, formulaic and unchallenging viewing. I'll do rewatches of TNG and Voyager from time to time but it involves a lot of skipping of episodes and I usually end up web surfing or doing other things while they are on in the background. My viewing tastes have changed and to be honest I don't get the same enjoyment out of 90's trek that I did when I was teen and in my early twenties.

Discovery and now, Picard have made Star Trek interesting to me again. STP Is taking Picard in a new direction, and I think it's compelling to see him come back from failure. It's also fun to see Picard interact with a new crew. I think Chabon has some really great ideas, i'm keen to see more about romulan mythology, what the borg have to with Data's daughters, what the Seb-Cheneb is and whether the Federation will find itself amongst the coming chaos.

All in all New trek is a fun ride. I'm hoping that we will get an exploration focused series, but that it's in the swashbuckling, alien sexing, flykicking vein of TOS and less of the speechifying, conferencing, corporate getawayness of TNG.

Don't feel bad. I've been tempted to use that particular word in reference to several people over the past few days (along with a healthy dose of cursing.)

[Fun Fact: there was a time, long before I ever joined TrekBBS, I would have without hesitation. I had quite a temper back then. While I am certainly no Kolinahru at present, I've mellowed a lot over the years.]

I wouldn't call him a troll but he was definitely one of those 'tru fan' types that ironically treats a science fiction tv show like a religion.

This. So much this. Out of all the Classic Trek shows, DS9's where it's at, at least for me. I only watch TNG for nostalgia (which is becoming more and more rare) and VOY because I'm in love with the ship itself (don't judge--Intrepid-class ships are sexy as hell).

I've also developed a taste for Enterprise of late--more because of the setting than anything else. I don't particularly care about the characters one way or another. The setting seems ripe for the kind of fanfic I'm interested in, at least partially.

I don't like either TOS or DSC in general, so I won't go over them.

As for why I like Picard, I'd have to give four reasons:
  1. Patrick Stewart is back, goddamn it. They actually convinced him to come back.
  2. The Romulans are being fleshed out. (Still not as good as in Diane Duane's Rihannsu saga, but massively better than anything they got in Berman Trek.) I've grown to like Michael Chabon for this alone.
  3. Synthetic lifeforms are of great interest to me. I really hope they don't screw this aspect up. (Though I wish the Borg weren't involved, there's a narrative reason for it. As long as they don't go down the whole Borg invasion route again, we'll be good. Otherwise? I'm going on a rhetorical rampage.)
  4. This period is VERY ripe for the kind of fanfic I'm interested in. Ridiculously so. I can see it now: Romulans. Synthetic life. Synthetic Romulans. SQUEEE.
Honorable Mention: Did I mention Commodore Oh is HOT, because if I didn't I should have. IDGAF that the actress is 24 years older than me.

I assure you, I am not a troll. I genuinely like / love Star Trek, however, nuTrek, STD, and, unfortunately, now STP as well, is where this appreciation ceases to exist. That's the most succinct way I can put it for you. It's not any intention of mine to provoke any flame/conflict with fans or anything of that sort, however, I see nothing wrong with bluntly criticizing the current shows, the course they have taken, and their producers/writers, i.e. people in charge. I will not apologize for that. I do not wish to insult anyone here in the threads. That's not my intention. If I don't show respect for the show, or their makers, doesn't mean I don't respect those who may like it. Any and every discussion, though there may be strong and unreconcilable disagreements and differences on many things and aspects of the current show(s), is nevertheless encouraged and fine. As long as each participant respects the rules of a civilized conversation, without resorting to cheap personal insults.

p.s. I'm aware I said I would leave this thread since I don't find it particularly interesting to take part in a discussion on a show that I consider to be so utterly bad, and I have left it, but, seeing the notification, I came back and wanted to reply to the above comment and clear that up.

They didn’t quote (or @) you. There wouldn’t have been a notification.

Then it must have been a notification of another comment before or after that one where my name or a quote appears, which then led to that comment on the same page.

All I'm going to say is this. No show is going to bring back the past (well maybe "Stranger Things"). Everything has moved on. When I see people criticize Picard, I've noticed one central theme. The so called fans don't want to admit that things have changed. Picard could never bring back the same experience as watching TNG. I watched the Orville and I was not impressed with. I've grown beyond TNG. What I like about Picard is that it's not just about nostalgia but genuinely trying to move things forward. Are there problems? Sure but they don't stop me from watching the show.

If I don't show respect for the show, or their makers, doesn't mean I don't respect those who may like it. .

Really?

It's like I stepped into a Kurtzmanland. That should be a red flag to me that I shouldn't take the folks here seriously.

I find the story generally interesting to this point. Though the question is will they be able to come up with a fulfilling conclusion? Something Discovery has struggled with during both of its seasons.

I dunno if this has been discussed already, but at the end of the teaser from "The Impossible Box", the camera moves down to a Borg drone... Is that supposed to be Picard as Locutus or is it a Romulan drone? :alienblush:
