The NON-Starfleet costumes. Discuss...

They could have easily made the clothing subtly different from what we wear now- remove the buttons/zippers, do something different with the collars, etc.

We'd just be complaining the other way about how hideous they are. For me, I just am full to the top of hideous Star Trek civilian clothing.

I still have PTSD over that getup Chekov wore in The Search for Spock.

They look like clothes to me.
That’s the problem.

The Galactica clothes, Elrond and the Lord of the Rings Romulans... I’m glad they’re stealing from the best, but they’re not swinging for the fences. They could be more ambitious.

This is Star Trek. Ambition left when it became a franchise cash cow.

I'm watching the latest episode again, and I'm thinking about all the autumnal colors, and the "winter" of Picard's life...the maturity of the series...maybe the clothes suggest fatigue. Less wherewithal to be spectacular and dynamic in the brave new future, and more a languor and difficulty getting through the day, the final mission... ...probably overthinking it. But it is a bit concerning when we assume that the now is the way it's always going to be when now is a great flash in time always in flux and will never come again. That if we do it right, the next now might be better still, with even, yes, intriguing outfits too.

Waiting for this look to come back into fashion

Put me in the camp of "not a fan of Picard's Panama Jack" look. I agree that removing the buttons and giving it a more streamlined look would have just made it at least feel slightly not-current, which would have helped.

But, more than that, I don't buy that Picard wouldn't be in uniform during that visit. He was clearly there in an official capacity and was "on duty."

This smacks more of Stewart's "no uniform" policy than something that really fit the character and the scene. Which is too bad.

@JoeZhang you're insecure, don’t know what for. I loathe that outfit, but you know what? I liked Kirk’s and Sulu’s and McCoy’s and Scotty’s. They made an effort. And everyone else felt the same, so when TVH came around, Chekov’s the only one in a different outfit. Picard says in the latest episode, “Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.”

They've already shown that they can do outfits that look appropriate for the 24th century without looking dopey- the outfit Picard wore to his meeting with Clancy, the one he was wearing in in last night's episode, most of what the non-humans are wearing- all of that stuff looks fine.

It's clear that it's a deliberate choice to show how that Picard represents the empty promises of colonial powers in this context.

After decades of dogging Trek casual wear, I actually really liked that sweater he wore in episode two with the raised pattern and wouldn't even mind having a similar one.

there's actually a lot of cool clothes in this show. but also yeah several that are not particularly futuristic.

one of the illustrators for the costume depart has been posting concept art like this on his twitter:
