I thought this one was pretty good. It really leaned into the spy tropes, right down to the ridiculous and almost certainly unnecessary car chase. But it was fun and zippy. I'm curious if Yaz's experience will finally give her some kind of character and personality at last. And perhaps the Master is just the villain to finally bring some depth to Jodie's one note Doctor.

I figured O was the villain pretty early on, but I didn't see that big reveal coming. Well done DW team for keeping that under wraps. It feels weird going from Missy to this version, but that's a me problem and one the next episode may put to rest as we get to see more of what he's actually up to.

Not my favorite for 13, but a good start to the new series.

Well, I liked Chibnall's first season a lot more than many people seemed to, but this was a surprise. Everything kicked into a higher gear this time around. And I saw it unspoiled, thankfully. Looks like Chibnall's first season was about establishing the new Doctor and companions without relying on familiar villains and big arcs, which worked for me; this time around, we're getting a big villain and, evidently, an arc, and I'm okay with that, too. It's not more of the same. But, like last year, it was beautifully filmed, and I'm still glad to have Segun Akinola instead of Murray Gold composing.

They could've buggered off in the Tardis when they were under attack at the farmhouse.
I thought it would be easier to grab than the motorcycles and airplane since it was right there though I suppose that wouldn’t be as fun.

I really didn’t like this one at all, I’m missing the charm of Who lately. All of the spy stuff didn’t come across as fun to me, I didn’t get it. Mandip Gill turned in a couple nice moments that regrettably just seemed throwaway. I really didn’t like Sacha Dhawan’s turn as the Master, hoo hoo hoo I’m the Master, definite downgrade from Missy. I’m glad some are liking this, I just wish I was connecting with it.

Given how things went with the Vault storyline, I was hoping the Doctor would react a bit more specifically to the Master returning to evil than just general shock at seeing him. “Missy, what the hell? Things were going so good between us! Remember, ‘I’m Doctor Who!’ ‘I was on your side all along!’ What happened?” Oh, well, maybe next week.

Speaking of Season 10, though, I’d initially assumed all the extra Earths in the graphic were parallel universes, but what if they’re actually duplicate Earths around space, a la Mondas? Or Mondas is being retconned to be less absurd by being from a parallel universe?

The “Everything you know is wrong!” cliffhanger (along, a little, with the Doctor and Yaz being imprisoned in what very much appears to be a brain) makes me fear that the stupidest rumor I heard about this season might be true which, if so, would be an act of hair-splitting, technicality-riding, trying-to-make-everyone-happy-by-not-actually-doing-anything-ing that would be worthy of “The Rise of Skywalker.”

Note to self - add time to pvr recording so big twists don't get missed.

Should have remembered from last season.

I really enjoyed that episode. Silly, yes, but loads of fun. I had a feeling The Master would return, but it was a nice surprise that it happened so early.

A really great opener. I hope the second half doesn't let me down.

Well, considering how gleefully he was waving around the actual O in a matchbox and returning to his TCE ways, I think her initial reaction is understandable.

However, I agree that she should have a more nuanced conversation with him next time they meet up in the next episode.

Maybe, but I'm inclined to think the simpler solution is the answer: They're Earths from parallel universes.

Damn, I haven't seen any rumors but that doesn't sound good (and I really enjoyed The Rise of Skywalker).

Didn’t Simm kill Missy and stop any more regenerations? At a time where missy and doc were getting on? And Simm regenerated to Missy ?
The Master has escaped worse. It's what he does. It's on his CV.

Wow. For a Chibnall ep, it was pretty good. They spent some money on it for sure I am cautiously optimistic about this season. We'll see how it's going four eps in.

Yeah, the map of Earth, then multiple Earths. The Master isn't taking over the universe, he's taking over the universes. That what I think the story arc will be, how to stop this.

I enjoyed it.

I wonder of the Master's gloating about everything she knew being a lie ties in to the Timeless Child mention from last series.

Anyone have a full list of the spy gear Team TARDIS got from C at the start? I'm wondering if there was anything there that seemed throwaway but could be used to escape the plane?

What’s the rumour?

Seriously. The frelling Master. Yet again. Words fail me.

Oh, well. I'll try to find time to rewatch it - and see how the second part turns out - but I can't say I'm impressed by this development. At all.

Is it me, or did he seem to be portraying the Master as somewhat "unwell" once the reveal came? There were segments where he seemed to be trying to catch his breath or supporting himself on the backs of the seats... another unstable regeneration, given the supposed impossibility of such in "his" last appearance?

Maybe the aliens restored Missy enough to regenerate if she agreed to help them with their scheme? I can see Chibbers taking us back to the days of the Delgado Master in league with powerful aliens but ultimately betraying them a la the Nestenes or Axos...

I liked this episode, and having avoided any spoilers, was totally surprised to see the return of the Master (it was a jaw-dropping, "No wayyy" moment for me). I loved Missy, but an unrepentant, TCE-carrying Master was the villain I grew up with on the show.

That was an odd bundle of ideas. Have to admit that for the first 45/50 minutes it was ok, clearly a lot of money has been spent and it looks glorious, and I loved the Bondian musical cues, and yet...it still felt flat, like it was missing a spark, though I couldn't tell you what it is. Maybe it's still Jodie, she's trying too hard at times and not hard enough at others, but she has limited stuff to work with and she's drowning in companions which doesn't help. Let me be clear, Jodie is a much better actor than Walsh, but damn he owns the screen in a way I wish she did (sidebar did anyone see the Christmas message from the cast that had Walsh on before Jodie?) and it just seems like she's fighting to be seen sometimes. I love Graham, I really do, but I really think Jodie won't be able to shine until he leaves.

It feels glossy with nothing beneath the surface, whereas both RTD and Moffat Who, whatever their faults at times, had heft in a way this doesn't. I watched the Snowmen again before Christmas and there was so much exuberance in Who back then, the dialogue sparkled in a way it doesn't now (outside of Graham and Ryan's banter)

The Doctor sending Ryan and Yaz into the lions den while she and Graham waltz off to Australia was odd, as was her leaving the bodyguards outside on their own when she knows they're no match for what might be coming.

But...but...

The reveal on the plane was fantastic! So glad I wasn't spoiled and yes he was a bit over the top, but he's the frikkin Master! Be interested to see where they go with this, and why the Master has gone back a few steps (unless he is a pre Missy Master, we never did see Simm regenerate into Gomez did we?)

At the moment a better effort from Chibnall but he can't just rely on extravagant reveals to get me interested.

The problems with the series all sit on the shoulders of one man. It's not the cast who are doing the best with what they're given, it's not the crew who are producing a show that now stands shoulder-to-shoulder to series with much bigger budgets.

The simple reality is; if you pick the safest, blandest set of hands to run the show, you get a safe, bland series.

If this was RTD or Moffat's day, I'd expect the next episode to feature the Master telling the companions some hard truths about what the Doctor is really like, as opposed to how she's presented herself to them but I won't be holding my breath on Sunday.
