Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

First thing I thought when I saw the Section 31 ships was,"These would have fit perfectly in an Abramsverse Star Trek movie." With my second thought being, "Man, I really didn't enjoy those movies..."

The Vengeance came from the Scimitar/Narada-school of big, dumb, black, overpowered spaceships. It makes no sense that the biggest, baddest, most powerful spaceship of a fleet is built in total conspiracy against the rest of said fleet. That's not how technology works.

The DIS section 31 ship OTOH - while visually obviously a bit similar - is much more believable as a black-ops ship for a clandestine organisation.

Never cared for the rest of the S31-fleet (or that big dumb battle at the end) - but as far as spy ships go, the DIS S31-ship - while obvious inspired by the "Guardians-of-the-Galaxy"-ship, just in black and with nacelles - is IMO so far Star Trek's most believable spy ship, period.

Question: I’m considering purchasing the Kelvin Timeline ECS Kobayashi Maru this Christmas - and am wondering what peeps general thoughts are on this one?

I’m leaning towards purchasing it, however there’s a few other starships that are also in the running - namely the Kelvin timeline 2009 Klingon battle cruiser, and the Phase II USS Enterprise 1701).

Thoughts? Preferences?

Thanks in advance! :)

They all have their little quirks. I like their KM but it is unfortunately not terribly accurate to the original for some odd reason. Woefully under detailed. But I do like it as a model by itself.

The Kelvin D-7 is excellent except the torpedo launcher is a vague impression on the front, when it should go deep into the “head”. Aside from that, the model rocks.

The P2 E is good, but I’m heavily biased in favor of the TMP refit. The P2 is just kind of bland to me, lacking the charm of the TOS E and the upgraded sleekness of the refit - a purely subjective impression. YMMV.

The Kobayashi Maru is inaccurate. It's based on the concept art CG sent to ILM rather than the finished CG and as such the proportions are quite different. Also the paint job is different to the final version, which does not have the hull number across the front. I suspect the people who made this model never saw the final model from any angle except what appears in the movie.

The Kelvin Klingon Warbird is awesome and my favourite version of that D7/Battlecruiser ship. As the accompanying magazine shows, it is literally the K'tinga from TMP beefed up with parts bolted on and extra windows to redefine the scale but IMHO the additions make it perfect.

I wonder if EM will try to reconstruct the Nemesis work bee(s). They're only seen in the background, the CG models are lost, and I'm not even sure which of the Eaves concepts were actually built and used for the movie. But when B-4 and Picard talk you can see what one of them looks like.

$38 on eBay, i couldn't say no:

the sculpt really lacks the character of the design, being based on the CGI model from DS9 and all. but it's also kind of an iconic ship. it's also kind of small for an XL, closer to the specials size. i kind of dig it, but it'll end up back in the box before too long.

huh.. some design similarity to the S31 crusier.. same nacelles I think, and the "Bridge" area.. interesting..

Going to have to wait till better pics of the Tug come out.. Have the general outlines for it, but don't see the detail on the "Tug" part between the nacelles... So it'll sit in 3d purgatory till better pics come :)
