The nurse station was also used for Tactical on the Saratoga bridge (the one from Emissary). As for this standing console from TWoK, I don't particularly recognize it from anywhere else.
Really? I can't seem to find images of it on the Saratoga bridge? Also, that particular free-standing console from Engineering I'm search for was only seen in TMP, not TWOK.
Ups, sorry I'm on mobile and I missread that it was TWoK. Here's a clear shot of the console on Saratoga. I reaserched it a bit while modeling the Odyssey set, as I was laying the groundwork for modeling this one as well. Also, notice how the conn/ops console both have the stand on the left. Such a weird mess of a bridge...
I was just thinking that. Anytime I have to study screengrabs of DS9, it's painfully obvious how due it is for a remaster. Unfortunately, from what I've heard, it's just far too expensive of an endeavor to undertake, given that a remaster for it would also mean re-editing and recompositing the effects. Apparently, TBTB didn't make nearly as much money as hoped on the TNG Remastered Blurays. But, I honestly think them selling the Remastered TNG to Netflix right after the release of Remastered TNG on Bluray did them no favors. I, for one, wouldn't have bought the Blurays had I known that a week after I bought them I'd be able to access the newly remastered episodes on my existing Netflix subscription. And it's much easier to cue them up on TV than to have to walk across the room to change out a disc. Ha! I think the only way we'll ever see a remastered DS9 is if they remove DS9 from Netflix or other streaming services completely, forcing people to buy the newly minted sets if they wish to watch, ensuring a return on investment. But then again, consumers would cry that they just couldn't get them "for free", i.e. automatically through an existing streaming service. If we truly want a remastered DS9, we all have to be willing to buy it should it come out. And if we keep our promise and actually do so, there's a higher chance we'll one day see a remastered Voyager, etc. Not to de-rail my own thread
That engineering console reminds me of a few 70's era arcade cabinets, but searches didn't turn up anything. About the remastering... hopefully the costs for doing it will come down, but I think the whole Blu-Ray path just makes it into a giant expensive project that makes it less likely to happen. They act as if they need to do everything at once like they did with TNG. But with streaming, they can piecemeal it. What they can do is first be transparent about the costs, and sort of do it like a pledge drive. Say, we can scan all the footage for X amount of dollars and if fans contribute that, they do it. They can release what they have and work through the effects over time, replacing the versions being streamed as they go.
I wouldn't be surprised to see them remaster the series for CBS All Access. It could push some over the hump to finally subscribe if it's an exclusive there.
Getting the horizontal shaft blocked out. Forgive the lack of textures; obviously a WIP shot. My last attempt at the Refit engine room, I'd gotten the width of the shaft too wide, but I'm correcting things using the blueprints that surfaced since my last time around.
I'm sure someone asked this (and, um, I totally know, I'm just asking for the benefit of others) but are you making it forced perspective or "real"?
Real. Even though I did model my TOS engine room with the forced perspective “cathedral” behind the grating to preserve the way it looked from many on-screen angles, I just don’t see the point of making the Refit horizontal intermix shaft forced perspective, since the illusion was much stronger in TMP/TWOK and we only ever saw it from the correct angle.
Plus, the whole reason they did that (along with the TOS engine reactor) was mostly out of logistical, available space and cost concerns. In a virtual medium, you don't ** need ** to do that. You're building a "real" ship. Why not build it the way it was intended?
When can thank all those product designers, like Jony Ive, who were all influenced by Dieter Rams and his aesthetic.
Finally able to spend time in front of the PC and watch the images in HD. Amazing work Donny, on the core effects and the console reproductions!
Thanks! I've updated the core effects and I'm much happier with it now. I'll have to take a video soon. Still not perfect (I doubt I'll be able to get it screen-accurate), but better IMO.
So, my SSD (solid state hard drive, for those unaware) which contained my operating system and most of my modeling/texturing programs crapped out on me over the weekend. Luckily, all my project files are stored securely on a 4 TB hard drive and also backed up safely online, so no worries there. It's just going to take a while to get all my programs re-installed with their myriad plugins, tools, etc. before I can resume work. On another (much more pleasant) note, someone special has entered my life in the past couple of weeks whom I really enjoy spending time with. Therefore, I'll probably be spending less time with my various projects for a bit while I'm being present with my new lady. And since my annual holiday trip home is rapidly approaching, this probably means I won't get anything significant done until after the New Year. Just a little update! I'm still excited to continue work on the TMP/TWOK engineering sets, I just won't be working like crazy on them like I was before. Cheers, everyone!
