I would love for him to be referenced as being promoted to Chief of Engineering or Security on another ship. A nice tribute.

I loved all these films to varying degrees, and still watch them quite frequently.

That said, I'm saddened to say that this news does nothing for me. The time for this cast and this series of films seems to be waaaaaay in the past. Paramount absolutely murdered the potential this series had by gross mismanagement.

 

Yeah exactly, will general audiences give a shit about this now? I don't think they will. Unless they pull an absolute surprise out of the bag then I feel these movies are done.

But as a fan I still really hope it gets made.

 

I think it was really 'over' when it took then four years to get the sequel to 2009 out. They just lost any kind of steam and good will they built up with that large a gap in production.

Glad to hear the news. I thought Beyond was the best of the JJ films and I love the cast. Wish they could do many more films together but this next one is probably the best we can hope for.

 

Paramount has been mishandling Star Trek since Lucy sold them Desilu.

As soon as this reboot was conceived, it should have been planned out. But there ya go.

If the ad campaign is brilliant, they will revive interest. But then again, who knows with audiences these days?

 

The Dark Knight Trilogy was another franchise with long waits between movies. Somehow they managed to generate much more buzz and anticipation.

Which is so sad, because 09 was really special in terms of the excitement and momentum they had built up.

 

Show-biz has always been a horse race. Great movies bomb. One movie succeeds, while another movie, of equal or better quality, flops. In the immortal words of William Goldman:

[SIZE=6]“Nobody knows anything...... Not one person in the entire motion picture field knows for a certainty what's going to work. Every time out it's a guess and, if you're lucky, an educated one.”[/SIZE]


The time between installments can be a factor, but not a surefire one. The new HALLOWEEN, bringing back Jamie Lee Curtis in her signature role after many, many years, succeeded in a big way. The new TERMINATOR tried the same trick, bringing back Linda Hamilton, but audiences didn't take the bait this time. I have no idea why.

 

I think part of the problem with franchise films in general is that they keep making movies based on how they feel audiences will react. In other words, they keep trying to figure out what audiences want most. I would rather they just create the best Star Trek movie they can. Instead of checking the boxes where there is a threat to earth, the enterprise is blown up, and there is a black hat villain, just tell a compelling Star Trek story. People either come to these movies or they won’t. But if they keep cranking out the same cookie-cutter type films, people lose interest. Star Trek movies tend to be the most successful when they’re doing something a little differently. People either come to these movies or they won’t. Is it still happening? It seems to be stuck at the same stage it has been ever since it was first revealed. The previous iteration of the fourth Kelvin film was more advanced.

I’d have thought it’d be the film to prioritise; it’ll get a truckload more buzz than a fourth Kelvin film will, and would give it a boost if that carried through to box office success.

 

Probably waiting for Tarantino. Can't prioritize it until QT does.

 

There’s been a lot of comparisons to Bumblebee here, per Wikipedia: “Bumblebee grossed $127.2 million in the United States and Canada, and $340.8 million in other territories, for a total worldwide gross of $468 million, against an estimated production budget of $135 million.”

Paramount would gladly accept that result for ST4, which would make it the highest grossing film in the franchise. $135 million is a fair budget, but it does have a lot of built in costs (cast salaries) that Bumblebee didn’t. I’d think the domestic/global mix might be different (more domestic, less foreign) but the studio would be very happy with a $468 million total.

 

Gap between Into Darkness and Beyond was 3 years (2013-2016). Gap between ST09 and Into Darkness was 4 (2009-2013). So they have been taking their time with these Kelvin movies.

 

Perhaps their compelling story involves a black hat villain, Enterprise exploding and the like? The difficulty isn't just guessing what audiences want, but also what makes a good Star Trek story.

Well, hopefully, someone enjoys it. My response is to pass on it.

 

Well, I'm not saying a compelling story wouldn't have these things, but since the majority of Star Trek films seem to have them and most of them don't wind up being box office bonanzas on the order of other franchises, I'd say a rethink would be in order. The whole "Earth needs to be threatened, we need a new Khan - don't forget to wreck the hell out of the Enterprise" mix is a bit on the stale side. Many of the best Star Trek stories contain none of those things.
