Here's the thing: "Boba = Mandalorian" and "Mandalorian = Space Viking" were both inventions of the EU. Though I suppose if you want to get technical, for some reason in their first Marvel Comics appearance the featured character spoke like a stereotypical pirate not a Viking...Also, the guy was an idiot.
Pinning down what the "original" idea was is a little tricky since the script and even plot of tESB changed during production just like all the other movies. And if you really want to get into the weeds; the earliest versions of Darth Vader were pretty much a prototypical version of Boba Fett before he evolved from an evil mercenary character to sorcerer knight he ended up as.
I think the origin of the visual design of the character started life as a new type of super-commando stormtrooper (which eventually iterated into the snowtroopers.) Indeed I think the costume was literally one of the very first things developed for the movie before even the basic plot had been worked out, so when the script called for a "Man With No Name" gunslinging bounty hunter, the design was re-purposed.
As Lucas is want to do, the backstory for the character was appropriately nebulous and varied over time depending on the source. So far as I'm aware though, according to most pre-EU materials (as in stuff that came direct from LF licencing, not things like the Marvel comics or the WEG books that were allowed to go off and do their own thing, more or less) the general notion was that the *armor* came from a race of soldiers or warriors that were once defeated by the Jedi either during or before the Clone Wars. That's pretty much it. Nothing really about the guy wearing the armor, just the armor itself. Lucas would later I think mention here and there that maybe he's a left over clone super-commando, but that's about it.

Also from around the same time was the Joe Johnston sketchbook for Empire, which contains from what I can tell the very earliest mention of Mandalore.
Again, it's just the armor that's supposed to be Mandalorian, not Fett himself.

This point cannot be overstated, and if the Mandalorian can distance themselves further from Fett the better that story could be, in my opinion. And this is largely due to my frustration that Fett took on this whole mystique as a character that was overblown in terms of how much screen time he had. I honestly think he had more lines in "The Holiday Special" than in ESB.
The way I like to think about it; Mandalorian armor is the Star Wars equivalent to a samurai sword.
Not in the literal sense of course because yes, I know: lightsabers! But in the sense that they're considered the *best* and most sought after weapon of their kind, as well as being distinctive and well known to the average person.
Just as any idiot can carry around a katana and look intimidating, but that doesn't make them samurai, or even Japanese; so too can any idiot wear a set of Mandalorian armor, but that doesn't make them Mandalorian, either ethnically, culturally or even in terms of training.

I remember reading something wacky that one idea was that Boba was Vader's brother.
No one is stopping you from watching it.

I'll do you one better: there was a fan theory back before RotJ was released that Fett was Luke's mother.
And now that I mention it I can't help but wonder if that notion at least partly inspired the whole Enfys Nest reveal...probably not. I mean the whole "omg the mysterious badass was really a woman the whole time!" trope is an old one...

I wonder if there's a special reason why we get 6 and 7 in less than a week, but then go back to a week wait for the finale? I can see doing 1 and 2 in the same week, and if they did 7 and 8, but this set up feels kind random.
