This could have gone in the Discovery subforum

Sounds like it'll be at least 5 years until Kurtzman's team consider a Trek movie :(

But this isn't really about the tv show just like the TNG movies are not discussed in the TNG forum this doesn't feel like it belongs here. It should be in Future of Trek like the Discovery spin-offs (because it doesn't feel like it belongs in the movie forum either because it's just speculation).

I don't miss this. Just let the mods do their thing. Where this thread is (or isn't) isn't hurting anyone.

For the topic: I'm not going to lie. I'd love to see DSC on the Big Screen. Even if it's only a one-night event.

I guess a DSC movie two nights long might be a bit much.

A theatrical movie seems a bit much. Simply put, I doubt Disco currently has the popularity to pull it off. Now a telemovie that goes to CBS All Access, or even perhaps actually airing on TV, I could see that happening if there was a particularly bold and epic story they wanted to tell that didn't really fit into the season mold.

I will give Discovery this: There’s not much they could do on the big screen that they aren’t doing already.

I think this is waaay too early to talk about a DIS movie, and Kurtzman's comments essentially amounts to something like "huh? Maybe?". I mean he's definitely not saying "no" to it (that would be stupid). But right now, they really have other priorities.

Right, they'd probably do less considering a movie is significantly shorter than a season.

It wouldn’t be something that I would travel to the theater for. Would just wait for it to show up on All-Access.

I don't think they'd ever do a movie movie, like the 13 already out there. Maybe a TV movie that also happens to show in the theater for one night, like they did with El Camino and they've done for other events with other series. I remember that BSG's Razor was in theaters for one night, when it premiered in 2007. I went to see What We Left Behind, the early Star Trek movies, and The Best of Both Worlds in this type of manner.

I half-expect them to do something like this with the premiere of Picard. It wouldn't surprise me.

Usually I’m up for fan get-togethers. Just went to see TMP on the big screen in September. But Discovery just hasn’t done anything to this point to make me want to trek to the theater. Maybe that changes at some point?

Considering Star Trek Beyond's lackluster performance at the box office, combined with CBS' interest in developing straight-to-streaming movies - https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/cbs-films-folded-cbs-entertainment-group-1175613 - and factoring in other streaming services' success with streaming movies (someone already brought up the El Camino 'Breaking Bad' film), I really think the immediate future for Star Trek movies is streaming only. If anything, they would be good fillers to throw in between seasons of the various Star Trek shows they have coming up. Imagine getting a Anson Mount Pike movie in between seasons of Picard and Disco or Section 31. I'd buy that for a dollar!

I have the feeling they're more likely to do Pike-era movies rather than episodic seasons.

Aren't the words "short" and "trek" kind of opposites anyway? Like saying "Long hop skip and a jump."

Anything less than walking five miles is a short trek. And if you're only hiking to a certain point on the mountain, it's a short trek.
