Well, a Lena/Kara relationship could have been really good. There was a least enough groundwork there to build upon. But they passed the exit a few miles back.

How did they get rid of President Baker so quickly?

Impeachment takes months, and 25 takes weeks.

Did he get tortured into resigning, or did Baker just resign becuase it was the right thing to do?

    What a ####ing cuck.

Now with bangs! Maybe I'll start watching.*
I bailed during the whole Midnight... was that the villain's name?... arc that was... boring back in Season 3.

*not because of the bangs, but because why not give it another try.

Yeah. I don't remember hearing about her being on this season.
To go back to the Lena thing, if they do turn her evil, I will be fucking pissed. It would be one of the biggest pieces of character assassination to ever happen in the Arrowverse, the whole point of the character is that she is the one Luthor who isn't evil, and I really don't want to see them go against that.
Now, yes she could, at least temporarily, become an enemy of Supergirl, but she can do that without actually becoming full on Lex and Lillian level evil.

Don't worry. Won't happen. The entire arc of everything about the character and her relationship with Kara are against it. It's remarkable to me that people can actually watch the show and still think that's a place the showrunners would go.

They should make Lena evil then turn her good again and give her a redemption arc. Or have the friendship between her and Kara end and have stay good by finding a new best friend. My ex president Linda Carter who everyone hates because she lied to them only she is still a good president. Or the military lady who took over the DEO last year. Someone on her level of being both rich and privledged. Jason

Well, she's clearly going to be positioned as something of an antagonist this season, because of her pain and her sense of betrayal. But the point will be to heal the rift and bring her back into the fold, not treat her as permanently lost or "evil."

She can stop being friends and not be lost. It can be her starting over and finding new meaning in life. Maybe is becoming a hippie or getting into politics. Maybe she sees herself as someone who wants to reform the republican party. Jason

We already know from the trailer that she's still going to be dealing with Kara.

    Season 5 / Episode 1 - "Event Horizon" -
    SEASON PREMEIRE

SG/Kara: SG - As noted last season, the idea that her one article would be believed by....everyone is such a Pollyanna / showrunner wish fulfillment / Very Special Episode moment, now extended to her winning a Pulitzer. Yeah, sure.

The entire reason for revealing her identity is bull, as this so called "friendship" is such an artificial, slapped together bit, that there's no emotional heft that would make Kara risk her life with someone as shady as Lena. It was difficult to buy her (Lena's) teary-eyed reactions--this early in the season--and it turns out it was an act.

Lena: The Twisted Sister song was supposed to have a double meaning for the show, but it works best with Lena being tired of the BS she had to endure from "friends." Her "sale" of Catco was a clear ruse (to audiences) to throw off her enemies, and as the finale teased, she's has darker plans in mind. But this series will--in the end--have Lena get a quickie change of heart when SG is at her lowest point and/or on the verge of death, thus wasting Lena's strong potential as a villain.

Rojas: That did not take long...Obsidian tech's proposed reach has to be a Lena Trojan Horse waiting to happen.

    "...everything's a click." I see she's watched cable news.

J'onn: Is there anything he's not susceptible to? Ii seems just about anything hurts him. He's the polar opposite of the J'onn from the "Timmverse" animated series. Now, there's yet another family drama? Not thrilled about that. The showrunners do not know what to do with him.

James: As I mentioned in the season 4 final review, I have no expectation of his ever being handled with even a particle of respect or understanding. He's there for reasons having nothing to do with being an important character, and that misuse continues.

His resistance to Rojas's methods is one of the expected building block excuses for his departure from the series. After all, if he cannot work for competitor, he has no purpose (as he's not a 24hr superhero) not that he had much of one over the course of the past 4 seasons.

Brainy / Nia: I still see him channeling his "relatives" at sometime in the future, making all of the "happy-happy" scenes in this episode being short-lived.

NOTES: Bad FX as always. Supergirl's new suit reveal was supposed to be her Iron Man/Endgame moment, but the CG was just awful.

    GRADE: C.

I thought it sounded familiar, but it's not for that reason. If I read the end credits right, Hope was voiced by prolific animation voice artist Kari Wahlgren. There are several computer-voice credits in her filmography, so I've probably heard one or two of them before. Discovery's computer voice is Julianne Grossman. (Wow, a lot of other Supergirl/Arrowverse characters are in Wahlgren's filmography -- Lego Supergirl, Alura, Lillian Luthor, Livewire, Saturn Girl, Black Canary, Cupid. Though I know her mainly as Emma Frost in Wolverine and the X-Men.)

This was a good premiere, aside from an undeveloped villain who was just a power and an obstacle to overcome. The focus was more on the character stuff, primarily Kara/Lena and Andrea Rojas taking over CatCo. Kara's confession to Lena and Lena's speech afterward were so moving that I was really disappointed when it turned out Lena was faking (and sounding rather supervillainish). I wanted that to be real.

I wish Rojas weren't so antagonistic a boss, but the actress is interesting in how friendly she acts. Hopefully there will be nuance and growth to her. Meanwhile, what is James Olsen if not a journalist or photographer? Will he be Guardian full-time, or try something else? Maybe he could join J'onn's detective agency.

Supergirl's new costume is... ornate. It's too gimmicky that it materializes out of nowhere, and I miss the skirt already. But it's a cute touch to use the trademark glasses-whipping gesture as the actual activation method for the suit.

It was silly to say the pod's antimatter drive was powerful enough to blow up three star systems. The amount of antimatter that could fit inside a ship that small would only be enough to destroy maybe a large city at most -- and if Kryptonians had harnessed power on that level, it should've been easier to evacuate more of them or prevent the planet's destruction.

Yeah. The computer was Wahlgren. I've been a huge fan of hers. Recognized her voice immediately.

The episode was good enough considering it was mostly character set-up for the season arcs with little actual plot. But I'm already more engaged in the story than I was after last year's premiere. I think the lenses have potential.

Through with Wahlgren's inclusion, I did smile at the thought of them doing some kind of take on an Isekai-type story.

They really should make J'onn a little less of a wimp. But overall, a better start to this season. I'm hoping they aren't going to dedicate another season to hating Trump, and actually tell stories. So far, so good.

Regarding Lena, this is an interesting arc. I guess it wouldn't make interesting TV, but in reality, this kind of betrayal would simply result in Lena confronting Kara, and ending their friendship. Given Lena's importance in the world, she probably wouldn't waste her time with Kara.

I liked that she didn't simply want to kill her. I also like that she's playing a long game. But I hope she goes through with it, and doesn't simply have a change of heart.

I hope Supergirl can figure out a way to get her suit on faster. Seems like a downgrade since she was fast enough to change instantly before. I get the out of universe reason to change the suit, though the original one is better in my opinion.

I wish they came up with a way to keep the red.

I like Julie Gonzalo, and I look forward to her being on the show. But that said, the idea of a 3 year non-compete clause is utterly ridiculous. Earth 38 has some unrealistic laws. Most states frown on non-compete clauses and they sure as hell wouldn't last 3 years. That could be fought in court, and where did this contract come from? If none of them signed it, then there is no way this would be enforceable. Jimmy Olsen could go right back to the Daily Planet if he wanted, and Rojas couldn't do a thing. Just for knowledge, in the state of NY, a non-compete has to be necessary to protect an employer's legitimate interests, does not impose a due hardship on the employee, does not harm the public, and must be reasonable in time period and geographic scope. For the record, in NY, that reasonable time period is usually 6 months or less.

    No CHANCE it would succeed.

Seems a little ridiculous that Superman would donate his ship to a museum, fully powered. But then again, on this show, Superman is not really written in character. That said, as someone who avoids spoilers for the most part, I'm actually interested in the villain right now. I didn't like Midnight, but I'm curious about who the new villain is and what the game is.

I'm less interested in J'onn's brother, but I'll give them a chance to somehow make the storyline interesting.

This season has some potential, though I'm hoping all the shows have short term storylines that are all resolved before Crisis so they call can lead into it.

They HAVE to set her up the way they did so she and Lex can work together again during the CoIE crossover event. ;)

She'll get used by Lex YET AGAIN, then return to "the Fold". :sigh:
