Saru was literally left as commanding officer when Pike left. Actually literally.

Well, if by literal we mean something put in words, Pike was very clear about being very unclear.
"Mr. Saru, you have the Conn as Commander Burnham leads you through the wormhole. As to what happens after that... I would prefer if we focus on our respective tasks for now and discuss the captaincy later. There are many things to consider."

Why was Pike saying this stupid thing? Did he have some reason to oppose Saru as the CO? Earlier in the season, he was all about preserving Saru's status as Acting Captain, reducing himself to mere temporary mission boss.

Does he now have a hidden agenda that cannot proceed unless Saru is given the boot? Or did he change his mind when Saru had his radically altered?

Only part of that quote is Pike, the other part is Saru, so it was Saru who didn't want the issue addressed at that moment.
Pike & Saru said:
Pike: "Mr. Saru, you have the Conn as Commander Burnhan leads you through the wormhole. As to what happens after that..."

Saru: "I would prefer we focus on our respective tasks for now and discuss the captaincy later. There are many things to consider"

Another thing to note is that right before Tilly and the gang tell Burnham they're going to stay, Pike calls Georgiou to the ready room and we're never told why he called her there. It's not unreasonable to speculate that him, Saru, and Georgiou discussed Georgiou being Captain and then later on the bridge during the scene above, Saru elected not to open that can of worms at that particular moment. His interruption of Pike and his facial expressions add up. But again, I'm just speculating.

I think the big chair ultimately is reserved for guest stars, which is a good idea because you can tempt a better quality of actor on a shorter contract. Saru will do it for a little while in S3 and then the guest star will take over, I'm guessing.

It's a cheap and efficient way to do that "anthology" thing, certainly: swapping the CO, who traditionally has "been the show", has already given S2 a distinct feel from S1, and this is likely to work for S3 as well. (How many distinct COs one can dream up remains to be seen, though.)

Swapping the hero ship would be the other way to show the "actual" lead of the show progressing through her life. But that's vast and expensive sets you have to redo, rather than a single actor. And having Discovery be a cursed ship is a story unto itself.

But Discovery has been cursed with isolation for two seasons now: first she holds the secret of the Spore Drive (with Lorca jealously standing guard), then she holds the secret of the Red Angel. And now she's isolated in the far future. Dragging new characters into the spotlight gets convoluted in in-universe terms when the heroes instead ought to gradually learn to be self-sufficient and choose their champions from amongst themselves...

80s nostalgia is really big now. The choice seems obvious:

Hide Your Caitians.
I've always said "The Ochmonek" is a classic Star Trek alien species name.

I hope it's Suru. Now they can throw a curve ball and make Detmer captain, and I would welcome that. That won't happen, but I can dream.

I hope we get Sulu, too! Even if it's an ancestol who doesn't have that difficurt lettel down pat yet...

Gary Coleman, sad to say, is no longer with us, but his comrade-in-characterization, Emmanuel Lewis, is perfectly willing to reprise his classic TNG-era role as Webster and sit in the Captain's chair. Again.

Webster was an awesome show. At least that's what I thought when I was a kid. But I have absolutely no desire to revisit it and let that illusion be completely destroyed. Because it probably would.

Charles In Charge
also falls into this category.

Captain Braxton

He's released from a psychiatric hospital and is frozen for four hundred years and Starfleet gives him command of Discovery, thinking there's no possible way he can screw up time again :)

Just out of curiosity, isn't Georgiou confirmed as a main character for the Section 31 show? Which would imply that at some point she's going to get back to the main timeline and off Discovery? Unless they're filming both shows one after the other it would be pretty hard for her to have a major role in both shows. To be honest, right up to the last second, as Discovery went into the time hole, I was expecting a shuttle or escape pod to suddenly appear with Georgiou making her escape.

They already said they won't start filming Section 31 before season 3 of Discovery is over. So I guess Georgiou will get back to the past at the end of the season.
