The guest captain for the season. The remnants of Starfleet in the 31st century will send their most competent choice.

Maybe the new guy they had with them at sdcc will be the captain

Saru was literally left as commanding officer when Pike left. Actually literally. And Burnham isn't the kind of person to tell Saru to f*** off and let her be captain. So it's Saru......for now. I could see it happening that something happens to Saru that leaves Burnham in command. But right now, he's a far more capable commanding officer than Burnham is, and she knows that.

Realistically, it has to be Saru
But personally, I'd like to see a power struggle, away from the reach and the jurisdiction of Starfleet, between Saru, Burnham and (if she's actually on board) Georgiou.
A subplot of insubordination and anarchy among the crew would be fun.
Or maybe some of the minor players could go all counter culture and Hippy, and basically not give a fuck about order or discipline.

I strongly doubt that they'll throw established hierarchy over board, like, five minutes after arriving into the future, presence of Starfleet/Federation or not. Voyager didn't, and the Maquis joining was contingent on them following the Starfleet rules and regulations, even though at that point they were looking down the barrel of a journey home they might not ever see the end of.

And if the Discovery doesn't have a new "homebase" with a future version of Starfleet and instead might even face a hostile version and unknown dangers they would probably stick to established structures especially hard since, barring Saru being demonstratively incompetent, they gain nothing from a power struggle.

Didn't information at Comic Con indicate Michael's going to be away from the ship for the first little bit, that she'd be having her own storyline with that Cleveland Book fellow? If that's the case, command of Disco will fall to Saru by default. Maybe Georgiou will try to worm her way to authority, maybe Saru might actually relent and rely on her combat expertise when a very real and legitimate threat is discovered in the 32nd century.

It'll be Saru unless his lack of fear causes him to do something sketchy in the beginning of the season.

The question is, who gets to decide? Isn't it Saru? Wouldn't not choosing himself indicate that his judgement is poor and both invalidate his choice and his right to make it?

Saru. Burnham is away at the start of the season either way and Saru needs something to do and making him captain is from a storytelling point the solution. It is a shame though that he lost his fear instinct. It was the most interesting thing about his character. Now he is just like a weird looking human. I would have liked to see him being the captain with his fear instinct intact.

I mean, there's a potential arc here, since Saru seemed at points to be carried away by fearlessness, or seek confrontation where it wasn't really called for (remember him fronting on Pike?) He really needs to be careful not to overcompensate. Maybe part of the Kelpian live-cycle after losing their fear glands is re-learning a more healthy amount of fear. In fact, maybe there's a story there, with Georgiou egging him on to follow his more aggressive instincts and he has to realize that this is not a healthy path to follow.

In season 2 after this transformation the character was practically forgotten and they didn't seem interested in exploring the consequences of his changes. We will see if that will change. I think his transformation is still a shame. It was what made him alien in behaviour to humans.

80s nostalgia is really big now. The choice seems obvious:

AFAIK, the only people on the ship who know she's the Mirror Georgiou on the crew are Saru, Burnham, and the Transporter officer on duty when Burnham beamed her over in Season 1.

As much as I'd like to see this in a rock the boat sort of way, I don't think it'll ever happen (My previous jokey post was to lampoon this.). The military command structure is a defining element of the franchise. I don't know of this creative group is any more ambitious and willing to take risks than the last one -- in other words, I fully expect them to pull a Voyager.

And if it does turn out to be a fall of the Federation thing, I think they'll (if only symbolically) want to keep the one remaining Starfleet ship as Starfleet as possible.

    He's a captain.
He is probably still alive (in a sense).
    And he yells at everybody!

(Ok, it's an offbeat possibility, but why not?)

Why, it's Acting Captain Tilly, of course!

On a serious note, I voted Saru. From what we've seen and heard about Season 3, it looks like Burnham's going to be separated from the rest of the crew for a while, so it's quite probable she'll return to the captain question already having been settled in her absence. I'll expect some sabre-rattling between Saru and Georgiou, but I don't really think the latter has a real chance for the position. While the lower ranks of the crew might not know who she really is, the command crew - and more importantly, the main cast - would know better than to give the captain's chair to someone like her unless Saru consistently proves to be absolutely out of his element in the future. But I'd guess even if Georgiou became captain, she wouldn't stay so for long; it's only a matter of time before she tries something that's completely antithetical to everything they stand for.

I think they're setting up for Saru as the Captain (a position I believe he deserves) and Burnham as XO. Makes sense storywise, given the history of the characters.

Voyager still had hope of returning home, Discovery made a one way trip into the future leaving everything behind, there's a stronger incentive for them to break with traditions and rules, 23rd centuries starfleet regulations don't apply anymore, they are literally a thing of the past.

I think it depends on how many people are left on Discovery, at the end of season 2 it seemed only the main cast, the bridge crew, Georgiou, Nhan and Reno would stay ... but then the entire crew remained? It was a bit confusing. If it's a small group of characters I can see them abandoning the established command structure, it doesn't make a lot of sense for a dozen people.

I was under the impression that most of the crew stayed onboard. That would make sense given that IIRC Pike and Spock's testimony was that Discovery was lost with all hands.
