I just want the news to report actual news instead of insulting our intelligence with non-stories and distorted quotes.

Because that kind of planning worked out so well for DC  I mean, Venom is better then any Zach Snyder film, but I'd put it at around Thor: The Dark World levels of quality (but without any character remotely as good as Thor). Venom made money, and sequels to Spider-Verse will probably do well, but that doesn't mean that Venom 2 or Black Cat or Betty Brant: The Movie (at the rate Sony is going, this won't end up being a joke) will work out. They're going to have to step up the movie qualityon the live action side of things if they want to fill out 7 years of (probably Spider-Man less) Spider-Man spinoffs.

All designed to keep Marvel from getting the rights back to their character :sigh:.

How dare they use the IP they paid a fortune for and worked for decades on, paving the way for the MCU in the process, giving Marvel free money for licencing based on Sony's movies?

A lot of them Marvel wouldn't use in film even if it did have the rights to do so. So not really worth disappointment let alone anger.

Maybe they wouldn't. But I'm looking at on principle. And I'm sick and tired of this business where someone gets the rights to some property and churns out a load of tosh just to keep the rights that bit longer. See if Paramount don't do the same with Star Trek to keep control of the film rights.

You do realize Sony still makes money with their Spidey movies, and one of them just got an Oscar. It's not like Fox not getting their shit together on Fantastic Four, Sony actually has success with their movies.

The rights to Spider-Man movies legally belong to Sony. Why wouldn't they do whatever they can to maintain control over that which they legally purchased?

Does Sony using the characters mean that we can never see them in an MCU Spider-Man movie? If so it is kind of a shame we won't be able to get an MCU version of Venom or Black Cat.

Besides, what's the point of Marvel getting the movie rights back? Spidey is already part of the MCU, they are already working creatively on the live-action Spidey movies, and as has been noted, all the other side-characters wouldn't get a whole lot of exposure in the MCU, anyway. What would be the benefit of Marvel getting the rights back from Sony? I mean, for Marvel, sure, it might matter (although, as I mentioned before, all the licensing fees for merchandising for any movie based on Spider-Man characters go to Marvel, not Sony, so Marvel actually gets free money with every new Spidey movie). But for us fans, what would change for the better if the movie rights to Spider-Man went to Marvel?

If anything, and that is me speaking as a movie fan in general, as well as from a political viewpoint, it is good that film studios not owned by Disney have successful IP to work with, as that generates cash the studios can invest in other productions, creating and maintaining more jobs in the industry. When the Disney/Fox deal went through, Marc Bernardin put it well, as he explained that there were already only a handful of major studios to go to as a filmmaker, and the deal meant there was one less to go to.

So unless you own stocks in Disney, I can't really imagine what the benefit would be to you.

@JD : Sony is already working with Marvel on the Spidey movies, and as they control the IP, if they want to, they can put these characters into the MCU. There're still fans hoping for Tom Hardy's Venom to be retro-actively added to the MCU, and if Sony wants to, it will happen. That said, the MCU won't have any shortage of characters they can use.

    My thinking exactly.

Shit, maybe I should change my av, I feel like it's infecting me with smugness.
That, or I've been binging too much QI lately and taken over some mannerisms of Stephen Fry.

It used to mean we didn't see Spider-Man in the MCU, but they made a deal that changed that. So it could change again.

On that note, I assume the same deal lets Sony do video games since Spider-Man was exclusive on the PS4 and made many of the best games of the year lists.

I'm not sure, but that might be a separate deal.

Just watched this for the first time on 4K - it's a stunning film in this format and makes full use of HDR.

Okay, sorry to anybody expecting actual news here with this little bump, but this idea has been spinning in my head for about a week now, and I spent most of the day so far putting this together, and I didn't know a better thread to post it in. Also sorry for my mediocre (at best) image manipulating skills, it's more about the idea for me.

Anyway, I thought there's one spin-off character that Sony really should do, and that's May "May-Day" Parker Spider-Girl:
