I really enjoyed most of S1, but was worried after its embarrassingly mawkish ending that S2 would revert to formulaic Trek and lose everything which made it special. I don't think that has happened, though; S2 has been a good blend of more familiar tropes with Discovery's own style and voice. It's perhaps missing a bit of the wonder and surprise of S1, but that's probably inevitable just by virtue of being the second season.
That wouldn't have fixed the stupid season one writing, nor would more cursing have brought the show up to par with TV that's actually aimed at adults.
I totally understand what youre saying. I love star trek, enterprise was my fav . As has been mentioned here, and to add to my own beliefs , why stick to the same old formula? Why not have a trek meets game of thrones? Something more action packed, more blood/gore, more horror etc etc, see where i am going with this. I honestly thought S1 was almost there. Sure the writing wasnt up to standards, but the rest of the production was. I guess im wishing on a pipedream really, as trek was always family orientated. There just isnt any real sci fy in space show apart for the expanse that is worth watching and i really wish someone would make one
Where is it written that DISCO is aimed at children? I must've missed the memo. Even if, a child old enough to understand space adventures won't melt upon hearing someone say fuck once or twice. Nobody has been able to explain the problem, and I don't get it. Anyway, I'm cutting it out now. There's not going to be consensus on this, and I've said more than I should have (probably). As for the Expanse: it's a great show, but it's so unlike DISCO in tone and subject that I wouldn't compare the two.
Real answer? Because I like Star Trek. If I want Game of Thrones, I can just watch Game of Thrones. I like the optimism and humanity that exists within Trek, there's not much like it on TV and I would hate to see it turned into another generic grimdark series.
I've always contended the writer's reason for Tilly's "fucking cool" line was not about Tilly's personality or having Tilly shock us with swearing. No...I think the writer's reason for it was all about Stamets' reply, which made Stamets seem a little less stuffy, and begin to show us more of a mentor-mentee relationship between the two (although I wished they pursued that relationship more). In addition, Stamets' reply -- a reply that showed us Stamets joining Tilly in her exuberance, and also indicated to Tilly that her exuberance was acceptable and nothing to apologize for -- did help give the viewers more of a feel that Tilly was being accepted among the crew and less of an outsider cadet. So no. I never felt it was for shock value, but rather helped soften Stamets and also helped show that Stamets accepts Tilly as more than just a cadet.
Well its supposed to be based on star trek not event horizon or expanse, i did not enjoy s1 but s2 i'm finding it a lot better and like pike a lot in this hope they make a pike show.
Agreed. I also think I found the moment charming because she was such a geek she lost her composure over science. Whether people found it natural or forced seems to be very subjective. I enjoyed it, not because I feel the need to defend everything on the show. I just enjoyed it.
Because that's not Star Trek. I'm all for realism and such, but you have to discard a whole lot of Trek in order to have a GoT style blood and guts type of show. If we are talking about weaving a complex narrative with multiple characters and highly detailed world building I am all for it. However, I do not care for the ridiculous violence, depravity and macabre nature of that work in Star Trek. If you want that it needs to be made outside of Star Trek. And would be for the best, in my opinion.
Again, you seem to have been overly-preoccupied by the swearing itself. However, I don't think it was the writers' intentions that the take-away from that scene was all about Tilly swearing. Instead, I think our take away was supposed to be Stamets reaction to the swearing.
For me it was the fact it came across as a 'stunt' fuck. IE In Universe we didn't have Star Trek characters just swearing randomly in everyday work on the ship; and thus it came across as a writer going "Hey, rules are different for streaming shows, so lets insert 'fuck' here just for the hell of it. Foe example in an earlier ST: D S1 episode when Burnham was trying to get the attention of the loose Tardigrade on the U.S.S. Glen - after getting the attention and realizing the danger she quipped: "Shit! That worked!" ^^^ For me that is a good example of where a swear word is appropriate and its a situation that makes good use of the ability to have characters swear. Again Tilly's "Fucking cool" just seemed to come out of nowhere, didn't honestly fit; and was just a writer saying to the audience "Hey look! We can say 'fuck' on air...neat huh?" and in that context I didn't care for it.
