S1 was awesome, S2 is a yawn fest

For me it was the fact it came across as a 'stunt' fuck. IE In Universe we didn't have Star Trek characters just swearing randomly in everyday work on the ship; and thus it came across as a writer going "Hey, rules are different for streaming shows, so lets insert 'fuck' here just for the hell of it.

Foe example in an earlier ST: D S1 episode when Burnham was trying to get the attention of the loose Tardigrade on the U.S.S. Glen - after getting the attention and realizing the danger she quipped:

"Shit! That worked!"
^^^
For me that is a good example of where a swear word is appropriate and its a situation that makes good use of the ability to have characters swear.

Again Tilly's "Fucking cool" just seemed to come out of nowhere, didn't honestly fit; and was just a writer saying to the audience "Hey look! We can say 'fuck' on air...neat huh?" and in that context I didn't care for it.
I rather liked both uses. Burnham's "shit, that worked!" made me laugh because I've used that phrase, and Tilly's "fucking cool" works because I've used that phrase, at work. Sometimes, it just happens, and both instances feel natural enough for me.

I'm perplexed that you found one use appropriate, and the other not. I had a similar reaction to both.

One seemed appropriate, the other "fucking cool" not. Not because of the words, but just how she said them. It really seemed like it was a "LOOK, WE CAN SAY FUCK NOW." Yanked me right out of the moment.

The other one didn't.

Again, you seem to have been overly-preoccupied by the swearing itself. However, I don't think it was the writers' intentions that the take-away from that scene was all about Tilly swearing. Instead, I think our take away was supposed to be Stamets reaction to the swearing.

Yes, I read what you wrote. I don’t particularly agree with it, but that’s just my opinion.

This discussion is fucking ridiculous

No one’s fucking forcing you to be a part of it. ;)

Maybe, but for me at least it didn't take me out of the moment. It might be because thought Stamets response in giving her the "retroactive permission" for her outburst -- was so great that I was more attuned to his response than Tilly's swearing in the first place. Other than illustrating her unfiltered exuberance, the actual use of the F-word for me went in one ear and out the other.

Stamets was a pretty stuffy character before that; his reaction to Tilly's outburst made him seem a lot softer and approachable. And I do not mean his swearing per se, but his agreement with Tilly that the moment called for some unbridled exuberance (illustrated by the swearing) and that she didn't need to apologize for it.

Granted, I did take notice that they used the F-word. I'm just saying I moved on quickly enough to the next thing happening that he use of the word didn't take me out of the show.

They have written Tilly as someone who is very spontaneous. It's not in her nature to be reserved and held in check all of the time. You get the sense that there is always a lot in her that just wants to burst forth into the open.

That's how I took "fucking cool" and I think Mary Wiseman played it just right. It seemed to be very much in keeping with Tilly's character.

Tilly is quite refreshingly unique. Vulcans aside....even in everyday human society there is too much tendency to keep masks of reserve in place so that a lot of interactions come off as flat-lined and artificial. There is such a thing as being too 'dignified'....it comes across as uptight and unnatural. Keep yourself neutral or be chastised, by a boss or some kind of an authority figure. It is hammered into people from an early age. What damage does it do?

You go, Tilly. :techman:

Exactly!

My comments regarding profanity on Discovery. All are from season 1. Has there been any in season 2?

“Shit, that worked!”
Don’t remember this at all. I do remember when Data said “Oh shit!”.

“Fucking cool”
I am neutral on this. It seemed natural and forced at the same time.

“lets not keep these assholes waiting”
This is my favorite

Where you see 'spontaneous,' I see someone who is autistic. Persons with autism sometimes tend to say things that persons who don't have autism tend to find inappropriate. That's one of the reasons why I found her line annoying, besides just the shock factor of "LOOK, WE CAN SAY FUCK NOW," like what @T'Bonz said.

This. And when are we going to get our Captain Killy spinnoff series? We need a show which will really upset the pearl clutchers.

Boy I've known a whole lot of people you would consider autistic (who aren't autistic by the way). Although they would throw around the word fuck more accurately than some people throw around the word autistic.
