Pretty enjoyable episode. Kind of disappointed the Michael/Spock reveal was something most guessed from day one. The Talos stuff was fun but I wanted to see the damaged door and blown phaser gun.
If Control is something like the one in the novels, my choice is Martin Sheen to voice him, since he was nearly the chap who played Sloane and played the similar “Illusive Man” in Mass Effect.
I’ll give it a 8. My highest score yet.

I'm amazed at how thoughtfully and sensitively they handled going back to a "sacred" Star Trek story and location. It was done with extreme care and love for the original material, and really TRULY feels like a meaningful and fully-integrated prequel/sequel story.

The Burnham/Spock flashback was harrowing and very emotional...not a let down at all, and provides appropriate, insightful and WELCOME backstory to both Michael and, more importantly, Spock.

Even the "B" story with Culber, Tyler and Stamets was 10/10. Well acted, tense, meaningful.

Totally agree. The A and B storylines were both amazing this week. And the episode was perfectly paced! (I've shaved a point or two off for weirdly paced eps earlier in the season.)

Whoever said that Peck is a worthy successor to Nimoy is right. No, they don't look alike, but I am getting the essence of the character more than I did with Quinto's Kelvinverse version. What's different is that I feel as if we're getting Spock's eventual gravitas with Peck -- the way that the character would sort of anchor a scene, perfectly still, hands clasped behind his back, until it was time to say something or raise an eyebrow.

What's more, I think he managed to assure us that he's young Spock pre-TOS in the performance without just being an imitation of Nimoy. Inspired by, of course. Imitation, no. He's doing his own thing, and at least for me, it works.

And Melissa George absolutely did justice to Vina. There was something in her portrayal that was heartbreaking. Trek isn't the best at romance, and yet, I thought Vina and Pike were magic tonight. I hope this wasn't the only time we'll see her in the series, or (perhaps?) in a Pike's Enterprise show. (Cannot believe how much I want this now.)

Ah, that was just so good. Still processing how good it was.

Yeah. They stuck the landing. Super impressed.

This is actually the first show since the original that appears to treat the era with any sort of respect.
I agree. I enjoyed this episode right from the begining. The talosians were spot on. Also more clues about the red angel and "fixing this timeline" goes a long way in my book as far as fixing my issues about Discovery. I am hoping that this new light I am seeing is comming from the end of the tunnel.
I would have given a higher score, but alas they tried to bring up the spore drive, and those stinking black badge politics holds me back from giving this a 10.
As for me, I like the direction their headed, lets see if they can stay the course.

The quality of the look and production of this show can't be understated either. It was like watching a frigging major motion picture tonight.

Damn

I am sorry for gushing, genuinely,
but I love Star Trek, and this one just hit me. I'm actually nervous about how they will compete with this one now.

My first thought was the Sphere Builders but that’s 26th century, and it’s done differently.
I have no clue who destroys these planets.

IMO Pike/Vina has always been the best romance Trek has ever done, which is really telling. And really sad.

I think your being a bit too hopeful about your Disco issues being fixes. I don't get any impression the show's present or near future is going to be affected in any major way.

Yeah, I noticed the camera-work too. The director seemed to favor wide lenses, especially in ship scenes. Lens flares were definitely a bit much but I chalk it up to experimenting with the anamorphic format.

The two things that annoyed me about this episode were the lighting (too many damned lens flares) and the camera angles. It felt very strange on Discovery at times.

If there's one thing this episode should pretty much nail down and superglue, there's NOTHING that requires fixing.

I'm going to need some time to digest before I can vote, especially after the opening recap. How could I resist that? Dirty pool, Discovery, but I love you for it.

Setting aside the squee factor, this was a remarkably respectful followup to the Cage. Mount was great, and I was impressed how well it worked when they transitioned directly to him from the Hunter version. I bought that this was the same character. Similarly, I'm already liking New Spock more than Quinto Spock. I really, really want a Pike/Spock/Enterprise show now.

The lady who played Vina did a good job channeling her predecessor as well, especially during the reveal of her injuries. There was a lot of love in that one shot, both in how the actress played it and how it was staged. Recalled the original very well.

The Talosians themselves were kind of disappointing. Didn't like the switch to male actors -- they seemed less alien than the originals. The heads didn't look right, either. Not in the sense that they didn't match the old ones -- they just looked flat and fake. The costumes also looked a bit tat. Maybe '60s sparkle wouldn't fly today, but ugly vinyl shower curtain was worse.

It was pretty easy to see through the big illusions, but that was just set dressing for the character work. And the character work was some of the best the show has given us. Stamets and Culber, Pike and Vina, Burnham and Spock, Saru and his bad self -- even Tyler worked for me, possibly for the first time since the Voq business.

The show finally stopped to smell the singing flowers, and it was all the better for it.
