I'd be happy even if they just did some miniseries or an occasional tv movie with them. I think, if by the end of the season, they actually show a physical set of the bridge of the Enterprise, I think the chances are high some type of a follow-up
If CBS are willing to go ahead with a Georgiou/S31 show which lets be honest is not going to be everyone's cup of tea I don't see how they can ignore a Pike/Enterprise show which is far less risky, perhaps they were waiting to see how Mount, Romijn and Peck would be received first.

Just think about all the new ship cutouts and diagrams, plus the merchandising a new ship will generate, we could get to see the first fully operational D7 or even a recognisable Bird of Prey in the show which would be a nice setup for what we know is to come.

It also depends on how long they intend to have Pike on the Discovery, they may decide to keep him there as his presence has helped the show a lot this season.

Huh? What happens to Pike? He becomes an Admiral or something

Not exactly. He goes to an alternate universe and creates a merciless race of conquerors.

Well, I enjoyed that quite a bit! The shuttle odd-couple story was classic Trek with fancy visuals and snappy directing that's made S2 awesome... but the deeply emotional, complicated, and sometimes ugly familial drama happening in the house of Sarek moved this episode from a 7 to a 9 for me. This is what DSC got right at the very beginning, and I'm glad they've kept it up. The drama here is on par with how I felt about Point of Light, in it being DSC at its best, uniquely DSC as @Lord Garth put it, I believe.

Sarek vs. Amanda is a fight I never thought I'd see and it was awesome. After so many years of just feeling like Spock and Sarek were just a couple of cold dudes that had little to say to each other, I love how DSC has expanded their complicated relationship into what feels like a real family, with the inclusion of Amanda and Michael. This version of Amanda, who is so warm and loving, is also fierce and calculating and won't be pushed into submission. My own mom is a wolf like Amanda, and it really speaks to me.

And what Michael, Sarek, and Amanda had to say about their positions in the family and what each one did to try and save it (in their own way) was pretty powerful as well. Families are complicated and they can be ugly, but there is no denying the deep connection this group has. When it was announced that Michael was Spock's foster sister I wrote it off as, "Okay fine, its like the James Bond Jr. cartoon or whatever, I can deal with hackneyed connections," but after tonight, I really feel like Burnham is Spock's sister. (I mean, they only say it 30 times an episode, don't they?). There was just a lot of beautiful writing in the cave scene. And when Sarek finally broke down a bit at the end, I immediately remembered every breakdown in Sarek from TNG. I don't know if it was intentional, but Frain was channeling Lenard in a capacity I have not yet seen in DSC.

That's not to say the episode didn't have problems though. While entertaining, this was very much table dressing for the second half of the season. I'm glad they aren't doing mid-season finales because this would have been a very aggravating way to end or start the midseason. Thankfully, we only have to experience this episode as a bridge between the setup of the first half and whatever they surprise us with in the second. The shuttle B-story was very much a B-story to efficiently get Pike and Tyler on the same side for the most part, setting up the mystery of the future (and probably connecting us somehow to Calypso). And while I'm always up to see Stamets in action, the solution to the crisis was disappointingly to just beam in (because he can!) and help.

And we still haven't had a real meeting between Michael and Spock. This might have been the most annoying Spock-tease yet, as Spock still hasn't appeared in the show as anything more than a prop, but I can let that go because we got a Georgiou fight, and that's pretty much what I want every time she's on screen.

So, how many people are rewatching The Cage this weekend?

I'm glad they aren't doing mid-season finales because this would have been a very aggravating way to end or start the midseason.

I am also glad CBS is releasing the episodes one at a time rather than doing a dump like the other streaming services. Makes for more civilized viewing as opposed to folks racing through all 14 episodes of season 2 over the course of a weekend.

Except with the other series (save Enterprise which I personally have voided) deal with TOS future (TOS being the baseline) and the risk for Discovery's constantly interweaving itself with TOS is that they end up diminishing it. The Federation covers a lot of space and has trillions of character possibilities and stories to tell. There is simply no reason (other than fear) for them to feel this compulsion that they must constantly invoke TOS. Sooner or later it will kick them in the butt.

No reason, how about $$$? IMHO, is there has not been one Star Trek show that has not invoked TOS one way or another, either overtly, covertly or dismissively on a regular basis.

TNG: We're better than TOS because we are more mature and intelligent than those ignorant coyboys and will insult any of them if they ever make an appearance.
DS9: We're fanboys of TOS, so much so that we make heroes from Klingon war criminals who show up.
VOY: We do everything that Kirk did, but in high heels (FYI, Ginger Rogers vs. Fred Astaire ref)
ENT: We do everything that Kirk and co did and more, AND 100 years before their grandparents were in diapers.

Savvy?

I believe this is three or so years after The Cage.

Finally got through the thread! As for Airiam being infected by Braniac, when I saw the three circles the first thing I thought of were DSC bussard collectors, lol.

One must worship at the shrine of St Canon' to appease 'The One True Fan'

I don't get this new trend in hate for continuity.

Some of us like world building and that requires SOME consistency.

To say that cannon or continuity restricts writers is bollocks and a excuse for lazy writing.

Sure minor error errors will creep in and there will be updates in visual design, that's ok.

But to radically change the star trek universe? No.

The star trek universe is HUGE, there is enough potential to tell storys without rebooting every 5 minutes.

I would actually love the inclusion (and conclusion) of the Temporal Cold War. First of all, it just sort of petered out over the course of ENT, which was disappointing. Second of all, I like fanwank connecting my different favourite Trek shows. Gimme!
You get one in the DTI novels. Probably the closest you’ll get to a conclusion.

They can change it if they really want to, I doubt many would mind that.
With the advent of DISCOVERY, I'm hoping that the guy in the Silver "BOX" chair, turns out not to be Pike at all.
And that something much more nefarious is going on.
