They couldn't get the church lights to work. This means their knowledge of basic electricity was lat 19th century. They were whisked away to a strange planet. All they had was the tech they came with and what they knew and were able to pass on. There is no way they have deep awareness of physics.It's also quite likely since it is stated that there were Scientists among those taken, that they are well aware of "Physics" and other Sciences.
But I got the impression that the Society as a whole had chosen to mostly forgo technological advancement in favor of a more Agricultural Civilization.
Their cultural stagnation seems very much self imposed.
As a former physicist I can tell you that it would be pretty damn hard to recreate much of anything from memory. They would need a professor, not simply someone who went on to industry, and the chances of randomly having one in their group would be minuscule. People with PhDs are ~ 1/25 of the population. Physics PhDs are probably 1/25 of that. Though a good experimental chemist or EE could bring basic electrical knowledge, but just really good ones. The first settlers also would not have time to recreate human scientific knowledge. They would have to figure out how to survive with no tech.
Season 2 is a lot better than Season 1 so far. It actually feels like Trek. They're exploring, facing moral dilemmas, wise cracking. It's what The Orville does and its all I want from Trek. The misery porn of Season 1 is not it. Even the overarching angel plot hasn't consumed the whole show unlike the war in Season 1. Also loving the lack of Klingons. They were so boring last season.
That said, this episode despite being a good one, had flaws. Sadly, Tilly was one of them. She's become a cartoon character and was largely annoying throughout the episode. And this is from someone who loved her in Season 1.She needs to be dialled back before she becomes Discovery's Neelix. Lastly, I still can't stand Burnham and SMH is a terrible actress.
Ending positively, Saru and the bridge crew have been the highlights of both episodes. If/when Pike leaves Saru should take the Captain's chair permanently.

To me, Trek is when the franchise is innovative, new and different. That is what "Discovery" was in Season One. Now, it's just bland and predictable for those fans who couldn't appreciate something new and different if they tried.
Like "The Orville", Season Two of "Discovery" has become a fucking yawn fest. If it's lucky, perhaps it'll become innovative before the end of the season.

DSC is still innovative
That whole thing with the dark matter asteroid saving the planet has never been done before.
And neither of these episodes were predictable.
Predictable would have been the religious folk being evil cultists, or super arrogant.
Season 1 of DSC was very predictable.

I was kind of surprised that the landing party chose to beam down with the full Phaser 2 package. It looks pretty clear that the DSC versions are modular just like the TOS versions.
When you're on an undercover mission, with General Order 1 in full effect, why not just bring down the smaller, far less obvious Phaser 1?

They're from the 21st century. They know about electricity. They didn't have the equipment to generate any after what they had died.
They show it off in the props BTS video on the Season 1 home release, so it is possible yes. The gold part even pops up like TOS.
Odd that they haven’t used it in show yet.
Unfortunately that show has become the blunt instrument that the weak-positioned Real Star Trek(tm) gatekeepers like to relentlessly beat DSC fans over the head with.
Which is too bad, because otherwise it's a harmless little homage that would otherwise be fairly likable.
My real world guess I should that it was a production decision. They probably figured it was more dramatic to have Pike zapped by a pistol than by an electric shaver. Still...really a missed opportunity. TOS used the Phaser 1 a lot. It was a unique little weapon.
Great episode! I gave it an 8, but I don't have any real negatives about it. It just takes a lot for me to give an episode a 9 or 10. I thought the set up, characters, and resolution were all great. The story didn't have any epicness or other qualities that pushed it beyond the realm of a regular story, but it was very nicely done all around.
Last week, Pike didn't feel right to me, but he's grown on me. I guess I just needed a week to adapt to the new portrayal. Mount does a great job. The Discovery crew members are a real team and it's a joy seeing them work together.
I wonder if each we'll they'll receive a new signal and jump to that location to solve some problem? And, gain clues on the way? That would be a great story! Perhaps they'll revisit the previous signals and find devastation. Maybe Spock figured that out and it drove him crazy? Lot's of questions and I look forward to the process of learning more!
