(2.02) “New Eden” was basically "Trek 101" schtick. Boring shit. This is what "Discovery" has devolved into for Season 2. This arc about the "red angel" and the lights better result in something original and interesting or else, I’ll give up this season and hope that Season 3 will be more interesting.

Earth is not their home. Its been 200 years, how many Americans descended from Europe, whose ancestors arrived in the 1800's consider Europe their home in 2019?
Sorry I mean the planet they're on now was their home. It would be different if those that were originally from Earth were still alive.

You knew what you were getting into.

Why is Stamets still there? Wouldn’t he left the ship at the end of the first episode?
Apparently, you missed the part where he tells Tilly that he won't be leaving till after they pick up the new Captain at Vulcan.

Which they never did.
:techman:

I think super obnoxious Tilly is intentional and is leading up to something - probably with the midseason cliff.

From the season trailer there’s a scene where Stamets uses the thing that Tilly pulled the bit of the asteroid out with on her, to pull an energy-something out of her chest

So right now, she’s over-energized

it was good. it was a lot of fun. I really like the dynamic between Pike and Burnham. I have more thoughts about it. Wish they'd tone down Tilly a tad.
all in all 8 out of 10.

That poor guy. He’s probably still waiting. :)

"That poor guy" is Pike; the plan was for the Enterprise to be waiting at Vulcan, at which point Pike would have transferred over to the Discovery and briefed the crew on the "red signals" mission, but that didn't happen because of the Enterprise being crippled.

New Eden
The second episode of the second season. Certainly an interesting episode. I'm not sure what to make of it. There are several threads in this story. The ongoing 'Red Angel' storyline (more on those later), the development of Pike, Tilly and her friend from high school, the society on Terralysium, Stamets seeing Culbur in the mycelium and what has happened to Spock. There is a little more than this though, including more on Detmer and Owosekun. Overall, these threads work together very well.
The Red Angel storyline (what there is of it) is interesting, but I'm not sure where it's going. I'd think they aren't Divine any more than the Q, the 'Sha-Ka-Ree' Entity Sybok will seek out, or the Wormhole Entities are (Bajoran opinions to the contrary). They could be incredibly powerful (but not on the Q level), they could be the Preservers, but they wouldn't be Divine. Pike seems to be open to that possibility. His openness to the faith possibility is a contrast to Burnham's rationalist view.
There is also Tilly... Quite interesting developments. Her seeing someone only she can see, and it turns out to be a deceased high school friend. Does it have to do with the mycelium? Or the interaction of the dark matter asteroid with the mycelium? Or the Red Angels/Preservers? Or all of the above? Whatever the answer is, it may be linked in to everything else. There is not much to say about the society on Terralysium. I'm not sure syncretism would be the response one would have to such an event.
At least, not right away. Their ancestors may have argued over what their experience meant for years. Other than those quibbles, the events on the planet were well written (except that the leader's speech didn't sound like a rote sermon.) I'm not sure what to make of Spock being in a psychiatric institute either. However, it is still better than most of the first season. 8.4/10.

But if the Enterprise wasn’t crippled, why would he need Discovery?

^ The Discovery is a specialized Science vessel, making her a far more ideal ship from which to investigate a phenomenon like the "red signals" than a Cruiser like the Enterprise.

Wilson Cruz was not listed in the opening credits. They may have switched to a Game of Thrones style opening credits, listing only actors that appear in the episode. So Shazad Latif may show up there again when he is in an episode.

I really liked the Jacob character. I was glad that he got his satisfaction.when Pike finally told him the truth.

There has been a lot of complaining about Tilly this season. But I am fine with it, I like her more this season .

Glad they are still using the Spore drive. That's what makes Discovery a unique spaceship. I hope they keep doing it, but don't install it on any other ships please.

Anson Mount is nailing it as Pike. Hope he stays more than one season.

I don't know, season 1 had big flaws but it was an interesting mess, not sure I want to go back to these kind of stories. It basically was interchangeable with this week's Orville. I'm sure a lot of others are happy with the "return to form".

I have issues with this. They are humans originally from Earth taken against their will with no "source code" for any technology. Yes you can't tell them about warp, but you can give them back some of their history. These people will take centuries to grow a society big enough to recreate the scientific knowledge of the 21st century. Pike should have left them some physics books. It's not like they have never seen electricity.
