I find Tilly absolutely unnerving. Are there no psychological evaluations in the future? How can someone like her get into command training at all? Anyone would freak out with a colleague like tgis around.....
Evidently she is very smart and capable.
And she is working hard on reigning in the part of her personality that talks too much -- as evidenced by the advice Stamets gave her about saying fewer things. (I loved that dialogue, by the way).

I really want to see more of Stamets mentoring Tilly, but I want him to be like a big brother who's not afraid to give her imputent tough love mentoring like a brother often can.

What about all this "transforming" equipment? Rather large Space Suit Helmets that "grow out" of a small harness, gravitational devices thag end up the size of a swimming pool are folding out of small suitcase. That is way over the top. Its just too "Iron Man-y"...

They even put in a Transformer sound effect.

One would think that even if They had hired a Caucasian or an Asian Woman to play the part, the Vulcan Hairstyle would still have been used.
It's obviously a very important part of the plot for the character.
She LIVES on Vulcan and is desperately attempting to "fit in" therefore, she needs to adapt to the fashion of the time and place.

The thing that needs to change now, is the perception that causality is Always the intent.
Sometimes it's just a necessary part of the story being told and nothing nefarious was ever predetermined.

Jumping to the Isle of Conclusions, has long been shown to involve a very strenuous swim back through strong currents of heartache and at times, embarrassingly misplaced rancor.

I don't disagree with this at all. I don't want to think everything is racist. I don't think there was intentional racism and of course would have done exactly the same thing if it were an asian person or anything else...but that's not the situation that we got so these conversations about hair and less-obvious racism will happen, just like bringing back Culber does not take away from the fact they did the burying the gays thing.

I'm not trying to say that the production is a bunch of Nazis, I'm not even that offended by her hair...I think her hair looked fantastic when it was all done up. In the world of problems with racism, this is pretty low on my bar, but the conversation came up in the thread and I like to talk about this stuff.

I do think it's important to stop and think why it is I might see it as fantastic looking when someone else thinks it is whitewashing a part of who they are as a person, whether or not I agree with it. All I'm saying is this: I wish they had given her a "Vulcan" haircut that worked with her natural hair, like Tuvok. No one would cry racism and it would have expanded the visual diversity of Vulcans. I would also like to live in a time when it doesn't matter if a black woman keeps her natural hair OR decides to do something completely wild with it without one group saying she needs to calm that stuff down, that its nappy...and then another group telling her that she is a sellout and white washed, but we're not there yet whether some ppl believe it or not.

They changed Kim Catrall's hair to play Valeris.
They changed Troi/Marina Sirtis' hair to play a Romulan (similar hair to Vulcans).

EDIT TO ADD:
I bet they wanted Jolene Blalock to get the short bob to have hair that looked more Vulcan-like.

I don't think the problem is that a actor was asked to have alien hair, its that a black actor was asked to have 'not black' hair. I'll point out that Tuvok does not wear a bowl-cut wig.

Are you kidding? She reminds me of the 'By the Book' Science Vessel U.S.S. Grissom Captain from STIII:TSFS (maybe a little less of a 'dick' though ;)).

As the TOS films showed - not every Starfleet Captain is a Pike, or Kirk. There's all types. We as the audience are just used to seeing the more competent ones. :)

Even if Jet Reno becomes the Discovery's Chief Engineer, she's a recurring character, so the "focus" is going to remain basically the same as it was for Season 1, with Pike in place of Lorca and Culber in place of Tyler.

I know I might be in the minority here, but I'm not so sure the show needs yet another quirky / shape witted engineer or scientist.

I liked Reno as a guest. I don't think I need her around being quirky and witty every single week.

And for those who recoil at the sight of Vulcan facial hair: does nobody remember Spock's very own half-brother Sybok? A member of his own immediate family sported a beard when we saw him and he was not just a hybrid with an identity crisis but a full Vulcan.
Plus we all know 6 billion Vulcan exactly the same all the time right? Why is it hard for some fans to accept diversity in a fictional species, or are only humans allowed to change their looks?

I do. I have a feeling one or two wry existentialist comments on the body being like a deteriorating warp core will put a few levels of maturity on poor Tilly and help her use fewer words.

I can see what you mean. She’s kind of a McCoy/Scotty fusion, at least so far. But she’s already one of my favorite Discovery characters, so I’m conflicted. :/

Why did this need to be turned into a 'woke' race thing? SMG said herself in an interview on After Trek that Burnham's hair in the pilot was straight because of the vulcan influence and that we would see burnham with SMG's natural hairstyle.

I like this. This is a really nice way of saying "knock off the stupid inflammatory bullshit"....and I dig that.

I just don't know how you stuff her into the Tilly/Stamets/Burnham socially awkward dynamic. Those three have a good chemistry and balance. I liked Reno because she was on the ship being rescued and everything was kind of isolated in that context.

I can't say I want her in the engine room dorking around with Stamets, Tilly and Burnham. Too much of the same thing crammed into one area.

I think they were purposefully trying to intercept discovery, pretty sure it was mentioned in dialogue but i need to watch the episode again.

Exactly, Starfleet had already given Pike orders to take command of Discovery. It's not like he just happened across them and then asked Starfleet if he could take command.

Good thing it it's nothing like it.
I watch both shows and I don't see any similarities at all.

You have an odd definition of bland

He didn't become showrunner until midway through this season.
You really need to stop snipping off little pieces of those straws that some folks are desperately grasping at.

They'll have nothing left to snipe with.
:nyah:

I don’t get the socially awkward vibe from her. More curmudgeonly self-confidence. I could see her butting heads with Stamets and having a low tolerance for Tilly’s exuberant adorkability.

And she's been stuck by herself for 10 months essentially keeping patients together with spare parts, while setting traps to try to deter the inevitable Klingon boarding party. I'd be a bit odd too by that point. I mean odder than I am.
