I just caught the episode, and I am very, very upset that they recast my favorite character. RIP Airiam as portrayed by the great Sara Mitich. I cannot stand behind Hannah Cheesman's terrible rendition of Airiam.

Oh gosh! That's who played new Airiam. Lmao. Torontos such a small place.

Down with Faux Airiam!!!!

Now I'm skeptical they'll actually make a character out of Airiam.

Likely to remain a background bridge crew character like the other 5.

I also noticed he was a recipient of or nominee for the Carrington Award. Isn't the Carrington Award a medical honor bestowed upon a physician who's made a significant career achievement in the medical sciences? DS9 never indicated that the award was bestowed in other fields.

Still. You're talking about Spock going from this:

And then to this:

Not exactly linear.

Skepticism is warranted.

Though, visual reboot.. for those who have accepted that.
Because my enjoyment of the character is not tied to the actor.

They probably just browsed the award/medals page of memory alpha.

I have a beard right now. I didn't have one three weeks ago, and I probably won't have one in about two weeks. I oscillate based on work, outside activities, and mood.

Spock has a job that usually insists on decorum that could preclude an untrimmed beard, but he's apparently suffering from some sort of mental breakdown, so he probably neglected his hygiene and grew one out. Makes sense.

I guess it could be established to be like the Nobel Prize, an award granted in myriad fields of study and achievement.

I guess a beard magically changes his facial features. It's not about the beard man. He doesn't resemble Nimoy in the slightest.

Facial prosthetics would have helped though.

Plus, Spock is just one year out of Starfleet Academy at the time of "The Cage(TOS)" and possibly trying to prove himself and look and behave professionally in a way he wouldn't in later years aboard the Enterprise. He was now serving on one of the most important starships in the Federation and as a half-human, half-Vulcan hybrid with a checkered family history and uneasy relationships with others he could well be in full "Gunnery Sergeant Hartman" mode in the original pilot.

By DSC he could have toned down a little and accepted his place in both the Enterprise family as well as Starfleet. The encounters with the red bursts and the Red Angel visions could have resulted in his behavior being even more un-"Cage-like."

Well it shouldn’t because that’s unrealistic. Actors grow old and/or die.
They can’t play the same character forever.

So then let the character rest in peace, instead of digging him up to prop Michael Burnham.

Especially for a character as defined and developed as Spock.

Kurtzman tried to do 'new' things with Spock in the reboot films, and it doesn't sound like those additions have gone over well in retrospect.

He doesn’t need to look like Nimoy, that’s silly.

The look is part of the process of selling that this is a version of Nimoys Spock, supposedly between The Cage and the rest of TOS.

But again, visual reboot if you accept that.

Spock's a minor character they can recast, like Pike or Sarek, and it really won't effect the plot or story.

But, my God, what were they thinking with Airiam?! You can't expect me to accept this abomination as the same character we've all grown to love and respect this last year and a half?

Overall I enjoyed the episode but I found the pace to be odd. Moments of it were so slow, like Michael reading in her quarters, and the the whole action sequence was so fast paced it felt hectic. The enterprise was beautiful as usual.
