I have watched it but I didn't notice. I might actually rewatch this episode before next week so I will take a look. It was just an observation from the credits.

Knew this a while back, but couldn't say anything. It was even in one of the trailers. Where they show the crew all standing and staring at the comet. Shes the tall blonde on the left, and Airiam is played by someone else. Looks like they're actually going to make a character out of Airiam.

Someone else here pointed out when the trailer came out, but it didn’t really spawn a conversation

Pike was best part of episode. And loved the various uniform colors. Do you think they purposefully didn’t kill the red shirt.

Too much burnham flashback stuff. Thought it really slowed down episode and used up time for other characters. I gave it a 7 as a result.

More pike, more crew, less burnham childhood will improve my rating.

Connolly had doomed kind of written on him. We knew from previews someone was dying and there's already two scientists on the bridge (Saru, Burnham) plus Stamets. Making him arrogant took the guilt away.

That was really interesting.

First, it was night and day different from S1. I really liked S1, so I'm not sure if the differences are good, bad, or just different and I'm having trouble getting used to it.

Second, it was heavy on character, and really light on plot. Again...not at all a bad thing. Character is what usually draws me to Trek. But, this was a really simple story. Basically, it was a standard rescue mission plot.

Third, I love Pike. Like Lorca, this is definitely a very different Captain than we have seen before, and I applauded that. Anson Mount does a nice job making it his own, but you can also see Jeffery Hunter's Pike in there in just the appropriate way.

Other stuff:

The special effects are amazing. Makes S1 look like a fan film. This was modern motion picture quality stuff

Did anyone notice Wilson Cruz is now a main cast member??

....this is taking too long. I've gotta post and get in the conversation!

I noticed on the Enterprise uniforms that the colour of the rank stripes appeared to be department based. Except Connoly, his were silver

9 out of 10. A few nits and issues but easily the best episode of the series since the midpoint of Season 1.

Yeah, I'm rating that an 8 out of 10. It was good, bordering on great. So many of the complaints I had with Season 1 were absent. Anson Mount was great as Pike. I felt like the initial intoduction to Tig Notaro's character felt a bit off, but she worked better as time went on. VFX were light years better than last season. The script didn't include any clunkers really, with even Burnham's monologues being better than last season. And despite some critical comments from early reviews, I didn't think the episode had "too much Burnham" as was the case in a lot of Season 1, or that there was any effusive praise which drew me out of the story. The shift away from TEH PLOT! to character was also very much appreciated.

That asteroid field was absolutely ridiculous - asteroids don't look like that - but at least they had the excuse that it was just beginning to break up.

There were, at first blush, three things which made me not give it a perfect 10/10 score.

1. Tilly just seems wrong this season. She was a breath of fresh air last season, when everything was dark and dour. But with the lighter mood she stands out more in a bad way - as if she's a character who mistakenly wandered in from another show. I found this strange, because I feel like Stamets and Saru were picture-perfect and treated as well rounded characters. But Tilly just seems like...a joke character.

2. I don't think the flashbacks to Micheal's youth with Spock worked entirely. They were beautifully visualized and well directed, but they really didn't make me feel much of anything. They seem to be relying upon our fannish interest in Spock to keep us engaged, which is a big mistake. The show should engage us on its own merits.

3. The show was a nice action-adventure, but action-adventure Trek isn't my favorite flavor. I only rate as 10/10 character drama type Treks like Duet, The Visitor, The Inner Light, etc. So as long as Discovery hews to this format I don't think I'll rate any single episode as perfect.

That was fun. A lighter tone and a science mystery, while keeping the good character interaction and some seriousness. I'm betting the entire thing with the asteroid was some sort of classic morality test by a godlike being - call a ship there, where there's people in need of rescue, and see what the apes do.

Really enjoyed it. Felt exciting, fun, and engaging (ha). It’s incredible to see Star Trek with a budget.

Came here to say 3 things:

1) Micheal and Spock DEFINITELY boned.

2) Enough with the damn free falls Kurtzman!

3) So part of the season at least is about some sort of search...for... Spock?
