Season 3 renewal?

We have the Agents of SHIELD precedent here now. I'm not surprised that someone would make the suggestion in that context.

I was at a premiere party for Star Trek Discovery in 2017, met some involved with the series. I live very close to where they film. They were filming eps 14/15 of S1 around this point. Amusingly, they used the production name for the series "Green Harvest".. a tribute to Star Wars.

Everyone on production already knew then that Season 2 was a go. Even before it premiered, Discovery's costs were paid for.

I'm wondering if the same arrangement continued for S2. It sounds like Netflix is changing it's focus in the wake of major upcoming competition this year. The cancellation of Daredevil and all the Marvel Netflix shows because they'd rather focus on more original content is certainly showing the tides are shifting.

I think I recall hearing that Netflix had committed to up to 5 seasons of Discovery if CBS was interested in making them. There is also the possibility that CBS could end up merging with Netflix one day, though it is also possible that CBS eventually goes global with All Access. However, there are EU content quotas that make it quite hard to launch CBS All Access in the EU. Most CBS shows end up being sent over streaming services with sufficient European content to meet the requirements.

All Access going global is cosmically unlikely for lots of reasons. They can grow tremendously from where they are while remaining a domestic service, anyway.

If that’s true then I can see Netflix demanding that the show be uploaded on their service after a certain amount of time has passed in the USA. Netflix appears to be moving forward only with shows that they completely control.

CBS All Access's UK version soft launched as an ad-supported platform on 6th Dec, and the rest of Europe from this month.

CBS doesn't have a problem with European content, as it owns three of the biggest pan-European genre channels here and also co-owns AMC in Europe, which also produces a handful of original series and is adding 10 more this year.

This would make sense if it wasn't already rolled out in Canada, Australia (as 10 Access) and UK (as CBS Catchup), with more countries in the next few weeks.

The only issue is Star Trek rights are with Netflix and The Good Fight is locked into long-term deals with traditional broadcasters that already had The Good Wife, so the service needs a lot of other buzzy shows and movies to launch/promote. The Twilight Zone and their new real-time murder mystery show will probably deliver that, plus new local content.

Well, we know that Kurtzman and Kadin have said they would like Discovery to go on for 'many years'.

Having S31 being greenlit would in my mind increase the chance of a third season. Since they're set in the same era, they can reuse sets and art departments etc (if located in Pinewood) which will reduce production cost.

It would ultimately depend on if Netflix would want to continue to subsidize New Trek for the world audience. I mean I don't think we even know if Netflix will get worldwide rights to the Picard show, or the new animated series. I know Germany used to have a huge Trek fanbase, but is that enough?

Discovery is still all they've got, until Picard, Georgiou and the animated shows start. It'll be renewed again. It's season 4, when there's much more Trek going that Disco's future begins to look uncertain. If Netflix cut their end of the budget they'll just make it cheaper.

Agreed. Season 3 is already a foregone conclusion. Season 4 and on will depend on how its performance compares to other shows on CBC All-Access including the other Star Trek shows and how much it costs to produce.

CBS-AA as an add-on to Amazon Prime is using Discovery as their main show to draw in subscribers. I don't think they'd back off and suddenly try to get NCIS-Boise or whatever else they have in the pipe in place of that. I'd expect an announcement in a few months.

Not really - WRT Daredevil, et. al. realize that the MCU is owned by Disney and Disney is starting it's own streaming service (and 'taking back' some of the content that it licensed Netflix to have). And yes, while Netflix stated it could continue to produce the MCU shows it had (Disney did not rescind those licences) - because Disney is starting it's own streaming service and will have some of its own produced MCU shows (Loki, and Scarlet Witch have been announced); Netflix marketing felt to continue those shows would in effect be tacit advertising for another streaming service that will also have MCU content - and they thought the money would be better used for something that more directly still promotes the Netflix brand exclusively.
