the hollywood reporter interviewed alex kurtzman, he revealed that two more short treks are coming after the conclusion of discovery season 2 this spring. and they're animated. regarding animated short treks vs. lower decks, he says: "What’s exciting about it is not only looking at each animated series as what’s the different tone, but what’s the different technology we can apply to these things so that visually they’re entirely different?" kurtzman also says there's another animated series in the works, but gives no details.
Might be neat. Hopefully each will have a distinct look since they don't have to use the Discovery sets.
i just hope they look ok, it would be really easy for CBS to cheap out on this. despite the fact that the previous short treks clearly weren't inexpensive to produce. i think short treks has been some of the best material star trek has produced in a while, i'm intrigued by the potential of animation. theoretically, they could do some wild stuff. my bad. i read that as lower decks being the kid-focused one, thank you.
There is also going to be a separate second animated series (beyond lower decks). So we are getting two animated series plus two more short treks (also animated)
"Star Trek 4 is cancelled so let's announce Animated Shorts"? Ummm. No. Most likely, CBS was pleased with the reaction to the Shorts that have already come out, so they want to do more. If this were CBS rubbing salt in the wound (and it's not), it would be a stupid way to do it. Really stupid. Because animated shorts are low-profile. The big guns would be the Picard Series. And there shouldn't be any of that hanky-panky nonsense. I'm sorry to hear about Star Trek 4. I thought the Kelvin Films had more life in them. But at least ending with Beyond is a good note to end on. Much better than the TNG Films ending with Nemesis. And because the Kelvin Films didn't end leaving a bad taste in everyone's mouth, when the films are re-rebooted eventually, whoever makes those movies will probably look back to the Kelvin Films to see what worked before.
So: 1. Picard show 2. Lower Decks 3. Academy show 4. Ceti Alpha V mini-series 5. Georgiou show 6. Pike show (possibly) 7. Another animated show 8. Animated Short Treks 9. Live-action Short Treks (probably) 10. Tarantino Star Trek film (maybe) And 11. Star Trek: Discovery season 3 ...are all being worked on right now in some form. Something for everyone.
I guess I could see CBS announcing a new project to take the spotlight off of Paramount's ineptitude. No reason to allow the cancellation story to dominate the headlines.
He's leaving the final dagger for Kurtzman. I seriously hope that they don't oversaturate the market and kill it.
If we cut this down to just live-action ongoing series, that's: Discovery Georgiou Picard Show Starfleet Academy
