The reason DIS is set around the time of TOS is to emulate the success of the kelvinverse movies. Copying the style and characters of the jj movies is just lazy cashing in.
Really? Well, if that's the case, then how do explain people who like DSC but don't like the Abrams Films and vice versa? Clearly, we see a difference even if you don't.
I enjoyed the 2009 film as a summer blockbuster but that's the extent of how far it goes. Same with
Beyond but to a slightly lesser degree.
Into Darkness... I'm not a fan of that one. Not that I hate it but I thought it was ridiculous and when I'm trying hard not to laugh at scenes that are intended to be serious, we've got problems.
Bottom line, I wouldn't care if they didn't make another Abrams Film. But I wouldn't be too happy if they cancelled
Discovery.
The inclusion of Sarek and Pike in DIS are so that fair weather Star Trek fans can see characters they recognise from that era having never really watched TOS. If I were asked which characters I wanted to see fleshed out from the TOS era, It wouldn’t be Sarek or Pike....
If you want fair-weather Star Trek fans, you're not going to bring out Sarek and Pike. You go for the gold with Spock. So, if you're going to level that argument, at least point it in the right direction. Sarek and Pike only appeared twice in TOS/TAS each. Sarek, if anything, got to do more in the movies. And Pike, at this point, is also better known from the movies.
As far as my favorite current characters on
Discovery: They're Emperor Georgiou, Burnham, L'Rell, AshVoq, and Tilly. Lorca will be seriously missed but Georgiou is still my favorite. I can take or leave Saru.
Note that I haven't mentioned Sarek or Harry Mudd. Sarek, I'm dead-neutral on. He's not my favorite but there's nothing wrong with him. The only reason some of you have a such a mad hate-on for him is because "He's from TOS!!!!!!" Get over it. It's nothing DS9 hasn't done with TNG characters. So, once again,
get the fuck over it! I'm saying that to ALL of you who won't stop going on and on and on about it.
Harry Mudd? I like him but he's not a favorite of mine either. He's what I'd expect him to be. So he wouldn't be a favorite character of mine no matter what. He's fun and that's it. Even people who don't like the show -- including some of the show's #1 haters -- like "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad".
But the way some of you go on, you'd think Harry Mudd and Sarek are the only characters that exist in DSC. You'd think Burnham's only purpose in life is to be Spock's retroactive foster-sister and
not someone on a redemptive path trying to work her way back up to her original position and eventual command. You'd think she wasn't someone who has a professional rivalry with Saru, let down her mentor Captain Georgiou, had a friendship with Tilly, or a failed romance with Tyler. No. According some of you, she's nothing but Spock's Sister, Spock's Sister, Spock's Sister. We get it. We fucking heard all of you. That last part is all you see.
You know why a lot of you think there's so much focus on TOS characters and nothing new? Because you don't STOP talking about the TOS characters in DSC all the time! ALL THE TIME!!! You're the ones who are constantly saying "TOS This!" "TOS That!" Do any of you even once talk about the other characters in the show other than to say "Burnham's a Mary Sue! STD sucks!"?
There's more to the show than TOS characters, it's just that the bashers aren't interested in the characters who aren't from TOS, so it's easier to focus on the characters you're familiar with so you can bash them.
