USS Enterprise (eventually) on Discovery?

Confession time: I wasn’t a fan of the Discoverse Enterprise 1701 when I laid eyes on it.

Buuuuuuuuut, can I say I’ve warmed to it overtime?

Granted - it’s not my fav Enterprise design by any means - however, it’s not terrible either (and I can respect it for what it is, in the Discoveryverse).

Just thought I’d share my reconsideration of this version.

Nothing wrong with warming up to the design. I’m still not a fan of the Discoprise as a replacement for the TOS Enterprise. But it is a nice design, far better than what we got in the Kelvin Timeline/JJ-verse.

It works a lot better when I ignore the CBS-approved scale of the ship and just think of it as a refit of sorts that's the same size as the TOS Enterprise. The ship herself is fine for the most part. The blue glowing nacelles are gorgeous. But I'm not as fond of her now as I was when she was first revealed.

I'd like to see more of the ship, inside and out. Right now, I feel like any opinion I'd have of the DSC Enterprise is premature. Looks nice from the outside in the one scene we saw it in, and that's basically the end of what I think.

I think it fits well in the lineage, even if it isn't exactly how I would have done it. Nothing will ever beat the TOS Connie in my eyes though.

I am happy enough with it and look forward to seeing more. Much like the Kelvinverse Enterprise, it is a lovely addition to the design.

The return to Treks of Yore-style very blue and very red nacelles is my least favourite thing about it. And something Disco has avoided until now when they've put it on the one incarnation of the Enterprise which has never had it in any of its prior forms.

True. But if we have to be stuck with any upgrade to the original design of the Constitution-class starship then blue glowing nacelles similar to the NX-01's and later 24th century vessels is the one retcon or alteration I can swallow and not bat an eye over.

To be honest, the blue glowing stripe on the nacelles always was my least favourite design feauture in non-TOS Star Trek. Always. Especially in combination with that red glowing front.

IMO all TNG era warp nacelles look like Christmas decoration, instead of actual engines.

The less it is pronounced, the better (Voyagers smaller stripes and tiny red dots are okay). I absolutely LOVED that such blue stripes aren't on the JJprise. And the Discovery at least doesn't have that childish red-blue combination. Alas, maybe that's one of the reasons the Disco-Enterprise looks IMO so unimpressive.

Don't ya know...
With the release of the Original Enterprise Christmas Ornament back in 1991, Hallmark specifically required that Trek ships have more distinct Xmas lights in them to better enable sales of their seasonal Trek Items.

Didn’t someone say that they wanted the inside of the nacelles to glow in TOS, but couldn’t fot some reason?

That size isn’t canon, so why does it matter?

And how do you know the size was CBS decision? It could have been the show people.

I believe the story is that they always wanted the inner-facing chiller bars or strips on the nacelles to glow but the budgetary and special effects limitations of the 1960s prevented the creators from depicting the engines as glowing when the ship was onscreen. I don't know if that's ever been confirmed but when the theory was brought up in the presence of none other than Doug Drexler the man didn't correct it.

Robert Justman wrote a memo* to Gene Roddenberry on April 7, 1966, discussing changes to the 11-foot model after receiving a quote from Richard Datin (who was responding to a list of model change requests from the Star Trek team). There was an item they apparently wanted, "Light Source on Inside Area of Both Pods", which was quoted at $300. Justman said "We'll omit this item...[and] discuss with Matt Jefferies an applique metal grid overpaint or something else which will require no structural change." I have not seen what "lighted source" might have meant; I assume it would have been left up to Datin to design and implement, but perhaps someone else can chime in with details.

(* I'm trying to find the memo online; it might be on the Roddenberry Facebook page, circa Dec 2016)
