I wouldn't be surprised that beyond the professional writers here, that there are a lot of people who are writing fan fiction, trying to write fan fiction, trying to write professionally. Probably 95% of the people here are "writers" in one form or another.

I actually won a "Best of Year" Fan-Q award from MediaWest for one of my 'zine-published TNG fics in the early nineties, but I don't call myself a writer.

I've been working on a story for a couple years now, that started out as fan fiction but then became something original as the story took off in a direction that is decidedly not Trek.

I don't call myself a writer. There are too many people here who have truly earned that title.
